Mermaid’s Daughter

You have to understand. My mother and I, we’re not close. It all started when she moved us away from the city, onto the edge of an island where the only other beings to play with were seals (and the occasional and rare selkie), birds, and sometimes a drifting fisherman might bring his children along with him on a trip. The kids at the traveller camp (mum said not to call them “gypsies”, even though everybody else at school did) didn’t want to have anything to do with me because I’d not got the right blood. School was a boat ride away, and I had to ride with the traveller kids on their boat, and if I missed it, Mum would have to swim over or take one of our little boats to pick me up, and it wasn’t like I had a mobile phone like all the other kids at school; I couldn’t be texted, What’sApped, Snapchatted, or whatever the devil else they were always talking about. They said I talked funny, I looked funny, and I dressed funny. And maybe I did.

And now I’m drifting, off topic and into the past, right off the line. Isn’t that just like you, she’d say. Has said. Did say. Would have said.

Moon Tide House

Moon Tide House. Coming back to this house carries with it all the bottled up angst of a lonely adolescence, all the resentment I had for her, for that life. And here I am letting the Author ramble through me: you don’t even know who I am, and maybe it doesn’t matter.

ME3 BLOG - 1

I am nervous.

I am nervous. I smile falsely for the suit who insisted on accompanying me to the house. The boat house. The house boat. Moon Tide House. I don’t know why he wants a photograph. Maybe it’s to prove to his boss that he did escort me all the way out here, even though I said don’t bother; I have a key. Maybe it’s because I’m so forgettable he needs a reminder, since we’ll be working together to handle… yeah.

“You’re sure you’ll be all right, Miss Moontide?” he asks. Solicitors are so solicitous.

“Maha, please,” I reply, with all the control I can muster. “And I go by Tide, not Moontide.”

“Of course. Maha.” He straightens up the suit. Must be uncomfortable out here on the dripping hot coast. I feel no sympathy. “Well, if you’re sure you don’t need me to walk you into the house, there’s only this.” With a quick flip of his fingers, he extracts a large manila envelope from his briefcase. “This contains your mother’s estate details, last will and testament, the deed to this house — it’s yours, by the way — that kind of thing.” He shifts uncomfortably as I brush his fingers by accident when I take the envelope. “Your mobile getting a signal?”

“I nod. “Yeah; it’s not like it used to be out here.”

“You’ll really see that in the morning. Beach is growing up. Locals have been at your mother to sell this house for decades. You’ll get a nice price when you do.”

I arch a brow. “No decisions yet,” I say firmly. And then I walk away without making any traditional farewell noises. He makes several of them before uncertainly hopping back into the motorboat we hired on the town side.

ME3 BLOG - 3

Thoughts everywhere.

The motorboat speeds away, leaving me on the porch of Moon Tide House. I remember being even a little excited when Mum got the moon tide lamps for the outside of the house. Maybe this will make people know we’re cool, I thought. But no; it just made them think we were weird.

ME3 BLOG - 4

This is where I spent my adolescence.

So. This is where I spent my adolescence. Mum’s spartan décor, her need to have almost everything in the house moon themed, “So we are at one with the tide,” she’d say with a wink. I sit on the couch for a long time, just staring at that mirror. Mum said she used it to communicate with our family back in Faerie, but I never saw that happen. In fact, I never met any of our “family back in Faerie.” There were times when I thought they weren’t real, but I’ll meet them on Saturday. Or some of them anyway. The law firm has been taking care of RSVPs for Mum’s wake, and it looks like many of them will be coming to pay their respects. Relatives I’ve never even met: ha.

ME3 BLOG - 5

This house was Mum’s pride and joy.

This house was Mum’s pride and joy. She loved it, loved that it was right on the water for obvious reasons, and all around the house there are little faerie doors, which she said brought good luck and would give us an escape route if we ever needed to flee back to Faerie. I never once opened one of those doors and found anything but a blank wall behind it. And believe me, I tried.

ME3 BLOG - 10

This dress is the last thing Mum gave to me.

This dress is the last thing Mum gave to me before I left home and we… well, like I said, we are not exactly close. Were not exactly close. Behind me you can see one of the faerie doors: it’s in the tree stump. And the captured fairy lights were Mum’s idea of a joke: we got them at a solstice festival when I was about fifteen. The dress came from the same festival, only a few years later. It’s still the most beautiful dress I own, and it should be: the designer is well known for her innovative creations and fantastic colour schemes. If you haven’t heard of Senzafine, you should really check them out. Not that I should be rambling about dresses right now, but there’s a reason I wore this here tonight and a reason I will also wear it to Mum’s wake on Saturday. It represents most of the good memories I have of her.

ME3 BLOG - 9

Memories of my mother

Memories of my mother do not usually make me smile. She was — is — was — a difficult woman to live with. Regimented. Aloof. Manipulative. Underneath all that, I do believe she loved me: it was just hard to see from the distance I placed between us, the distance she did not resist. She couldn’t tell me she loved me when I decided to leave. So she bought me a beautiful dress.

ME3 BLOG - 6

What is she looking at? you might wonder.

And now, if you saw me through one of the tall windows, standing here in the almost-empty house with just a coolpak of Diet Coke and cheese to get me through the next twelve hours, you’d wonder, maybe, What is she looking at?

Everything. I’m looking at everything. How the ten years since I left home seem to encapsulate themselves and be nothing next to this house, a house that looks almost exactly as it did the day I left. This house. This sea. This lost woman, nearly middle-aged, still trying to find herself, still adrift, and remembering that you need sea legs in this house as the tide begins to come in, rocking the pontoons.

And then there is a crack of thunder, a light on the moon side, and I turn at the light, at the movement.

ME3 BLOG - 8

The vision of her is so real.

The vision of her is so real: I walk to the window (this one really is a door, “so we can hop in a boat and escape quickly if we ever need to,” she said.). And there she is, larger than light, her tail reflecting moonlight. But she’s not solid. She’s not there. Her eyes say that she regrets our strained relationship, our parting, the fact we’ve barely spoken in ten years. Sadness for the fact that we can never speak again, now.

ME3 BLOG - 7

I am alone in the world now.

And then it comes to me: I am alone in the world now. I am her only child, this disappointment of a daughter who didn’t develop gills at adolescence and would never swim the ocean and comb her hair on rocks, or whatever it is mermaids get up to when they’re not swindling poor sailors out of their hard earned gods know what.

And suddenly, I’m just weary. I finish the rest of the nearly-empty Diet Coke and bin the bottle, and then I climb the ladder up to the loft. My room. Mum said there was only a bedroom in the house because of me. When she slept inside, she was happy to be on the couch, she said.

ME3 BLOG - 11

My Room

My room. The bedsheets clean and different from what I remember, but everything else is the same. The writing desk. The ridiculous plush unicorn I didn’t even want. Three faerie doors, one in the shape of a mushroom. I should tack those lights back up. I should — no, I will never repaint the ceiling, the moon mural she created for me when I was thirteen and hated her and wanted to move back to Nu Jyorck and be with all my friends. Friends whom I couldn’t even email because there was no Internet, no mobile service, no telephone. I’d stare up at that ceiling and wish I could fly. Wish I could swim as fast as my mother. Know in my heart that whoever my father was, he was no merman and I had only a small chance of inheriting the sea.

ME3 BLOG - 12

It cannot be too much for one person to bear.

It cannot be too much for one person to bear. Because I am one person, me alone, and I will bear it. I must bear it.

I did not like my mother. But now, lying in this bed I cried in for seven years, I understand that I did love her. No more now: tears are coming.

Many thanks to LRRiven of Rivendale and Synjari of Senzafine, whose gorgeous designs for the Midsummer Enchantment event sparked this story and gave me some of the tools with which to write it. I am always, always indebted to the stunning minds behind the creators who make all these toys I love to play with!

Invasion of the Steampunk Cats!

It was a pretty ordinary Friday night, the sort of Friday night I spend in Awenia when Nathaniel has business in Mysthaven.

Steampunk Cats BLOG - 1

Ordinary in that I was the last person out the pub.

Ordinary, in that I was the last person out the pub. But some of the brownies and the other Sidhe and I had got into a debate about — do you know, I can’t even remember, because it wasn’t important, even though it seemed vitally so at the time — and we weren’t afraid to drink an awful lot of mead while having this debate. We never are.

Steampunk Cats BLOG - 2

I looked out across the flower meadow.

At this point, I’d said goodnight to everyone, sent them on their way, and then, completely by chance, I looked out across the flower meadow.

Steampunk Cats BLOG - 3

Hey! You can’t park that thing in my meadow!

“Hey!” I screamed. Not my most sober or Queenly moment ever. “You can’t park that thing in my meadow!

I don’t know how I expected them to hear me through all that…. well, here is what I saw:

Steampunk Cats BLOG - 4

Oh, HELLS no.

Oh, HELLS no. No way was a dilapidated airship setting down in my flower meadow.

Except, of course, it was.

Well, obviously I did the most intelligent thing ever. I stalked right the fuck over there to check it out.

Once the thing had settled down, I banged on the door (rather loudly, I admit — and it did make a satisfying clanging sound).

Steampunk Cats BLOG - 5

Don’t get your panties in a wad: I’m comin’, I’m comin’.

A strong American accent came through the crack in the door. “Don’t get your panties in a wad: I’m comin’, I’m comin’!”

The door swung open to reveal a very large and, if I’m honest, ugly ginger cat. I mean, ugly is perhaps a strong word. He was ungainly, perhaps. Or maybe just unbeautiful. My search for adjectives notwithstanding, I just stared at him for a moment.

“Well never mind, then,” he said. “Forget that: it seems you’re not wearing panties at all, young lady.”

Oh, that was it. Ugly and cheeky? This cat was about to get a piece of my mind.

I drew myself up to my full height. “I may look like a young lady, O Ginger One, but I am also the Queen and ruler of this land, Awenia. And I would very much prefer that you not park an unsightly airship in my flower meadow.”

Steampunk Cats BLOG - 6

The night wind picked up as another cat poked his head round the door.

The night wind picked up as another cat poked his head round the door. This one was black with eerie yellow eyes. “We heard,” said the black cat in a much better-modulated voice than Mr Ginger over there, “that Awenia was a new Realm we could come and explore and possibly find a home in.” She rubbed her cheek against the edge of the airship door. “We have a clan of sorts, and we search for the right sort of place to settle.” She looked up with her big eyes; I could have sworn there was an imploring smile there.

I thought for a moment. “Well, how many of you are there?” I asked.

Ginger shrugged. “See for yourself,” he said, nodding his head into the interior of the airship.

Steampunk Cats BLOG - 8

Only nine?

“Only nine?” I said. “That seems a small number for a clan of cats.”

“Two of us are expecting kittens,” said the black cat proudly. “The black ones are all my children, except for that one lying on the floor: that’s my sister; she’s never been right.”

“I heard that!” yowled the floor-sitter. “You just don’t believe these kittens came from aliens!”

“No, darling; I do believe it,” said the black cat. “In any case, Felines and Fae work well together, do we not? And our initial survey of Awenia shows very few cats here. Why is that?”

I considered. The night wind was sobering me up nicely.

Steampunk Cats BLOG - 7

I haven’t really given the matter much thought….

“I haven’t really given the matter much thought,” I said at last. “The truth is, I love cats and I’d love to have more cats about. But the fact remains you can’t leave this ship here. I have a little pocket universe we can stash it in if you are amenable to that.”

“Oh, pish-posh,” said Ginger. “For that matter, we’ve got our own. No need to come barrelling down on us like the Realm Police.”

I sighed. “I am the Realm Police,” I said. “We’re a small Realm, only just getting started, but I have great plans for us. Those plans could include you, if you like. Tell you what. You take the remainder of the night to look around the Realm, see if you find what you’re looking for, and in the morning we’ll discuss airship storage Is that all right with you?”

The black cat started purring her head off. I guessed that was a good sign. Of course, I didn’t want to insult them by offering them pets or treats, but when she butted her head against my hand, I couldn’t resist a little cuddle.

Steampunk Cats BLOG - 9

Town’s that way, I said.

“Town’s that way,” I said. “Pub’s just closing so you’ll likely find food. Sheep and cattle behind the pub in the green, please don’t terrorise. We have a lot of birds, and I can negotiate a hunting schedule with you if you prefer live prey. Queen’s gardens in front of me; you’re welcome to roam there though you may find more pixies than anything edible. There are residences throughout, a nice book forest if you like to read, and my castle is on the opposite Realm corner. You never know what you’ll find there. I only ask that we meet again tomorrow, decide whether you’ll stay for a visit or a trial at living here, and work out what to do with the airship.”

“Agreed!” said the black cat, perhaps a little too quickly. “We are indebted to you for your hospitality.”

I frowned. “Hospitality is a right, not a privilege; there is no need to claim debt.”

The black cat wiggled her ears at me. “Different rules for cats, My Lady; different rules for cats. We’ll talk more tomorrow.” She let out a little screech, and the other seven cats came scurrying out the door. She and Ginger stayed behind to watch which directions they ran in; then the two of them went off in another direction entirely.

And they left the damn door open. Like a mug, I closed it behind them, making sure it wasn’t locked. I had a feeling this story would be continuing.

Walking Out in the Willows of Nienna

With every Faire season come parties upon parties. There is always somewhere to go, always a performance to see, people one hasn’t seen in ages to remember why one hasn’t seen them in ages… lots of that.

In fact, sometimes I get downright tired of it all, and so I let The Author take the reins. Now, The Author is of course very similar to me, except that she has different priorities; or at least that’s what she says. I think we have the same priorities and she uses me to live vicariously as a Queen, but that’s neither here or there.

Willows PS - 3

How small we all look!

How small we all look, next to the goddess pool in Nienna. The Author, along with her friend Syeira and consort Nyza, appeared in Willows in matching outfits because they “like dressing up”.

Willows PS - 1

Here they are a little closer-up.

Here the are a little closer up. The Author and Syeira are in matching dresses by MishMash Fusion, in colourways of the designer’s Something True gown appropriately named Syeira (that’s the one of the left) and Gwen (that’s the one on the right). Upon seeing these two colourways, The Author of course said to Syeira that they must take photographs of the two of them together in these gowns, so that’s what they did. Nyza looks very fetching in his Muskateer outfit, but I suspect he was just along for the ride (no pun intended, ew! author kiss germs!)

Willows PS - 4

No better backdrop for a purple dress!

No better backdrop for a purple dress than the almost overwhelming blues of Nienna.

Willows PS - 5

They experimented with various poses.

They experimented with various poses, of course, even though they’re both a bit old to be part of the selfie generation (not that anybody can tell in the Fairelands).

All of our outings have seemed very short this season, which makes me sad. But The Author claims she is exhausted and just has so much to do, and blah, blah, blah. Personally, I think she’s just jealous that I have more fun than she does.

Willows PS - 2

The trees sure are beautiful, though.

Freedom in the Pools of Ethuil

The Pools of Ethuil are one of the Realms in this year’s Faire that I come back to again and again. There is a serene and restful vibe there that I crave.

Pools FF 1 BLOG - 4

So many beautiful places to relax in the Pools!

There are so many beautiful places to relax in the Pools! But of course, I can never stay in one place for very long: if I linger, the local demifae start coming round and asking me when Awenia is going to be ready for residents. I’m tired of explaining the whole legal kerfuffle to everybody, particularly tiny fae who get bored after the first sentence and ask questions in the way I imagine toddlers do. “Why?” “Why?” “Why?” And then they never stick around to hear the explanation, little flibbertigibbets!

Pools FF 1 BLOG - 5

Thinking about all that makes my head hurt.

Ach, thinking about all that makes my head hurt. I wonder, though, as I wander round all these beautiful Realms, open to everyone for just these few magical days of the Great Faire, how we’ll put it all together. I mean, we want a town, a magical town, with links to or gates right into a little piece of Faerie. I think with our skills that’ll be possible to create.

Pools FF 1 BLOG - 7

The what-ifs

It’s hard not to get mired down in the what-ifs, particularly when so much of me is the culmination of dozens of odd what-ifs. The need to explain it all has fallen away from me now, after so many years away from the life I thought was my only one. Turns out we can have several different lives in one lifetime. And as I’m going to have a very long lifetime, being prepared for my life to change with no notice has just become not a shocking possibility but a resigned probability.

Pools FF 1 BLOG - 8

The feeling of peace

Still, as I roam the beautiful paths of Pools of Ethuil, it’s hard to let anything break through and bother me, because here is a place so much like the one I want to build for our people back in Awenia.

Pools FF 1 BLOG - 2

Why not dance?

And so, why not dance while the soft skies give us warmth from the distant sun?

Pools FF 1 BLOG - 1

Why not run?

Why not run, with no destination and no desire but the ecstatic wind against our skin?

Pools FF 1 BLOG - 3

Why not leap?

Why not leap, because everything is a leap: life, love, learning, trust, laughter, hope— it’s all a leap. Why not leap without fear?

Why not leap?

February Fashion Show!

Sometimes, we find beautiful things in the unlikeliest of places. I think cities like Nu Jyorck excel at this kind of thing. Great artwork on the sides of tenements, sculptures made out of rubbish, and of course the annual February Fae Fashion Show, which takes place in a different abandoned building every year. And while I’m certain my ongoing friendship with Arahaelon is behind many things that happen to me in Nu Jyorck, it still gave me a thrill when the FFS (best initials ever!) crew got in touch to say they’d like me to be in the show this year!

All the models are Fae, though the audience is a mix: Nu Jyorck has such a fae-worshipping vibe that tickets are pretty hot, even for the most expensive city in most Realms. Of course, official photos of the show itself can only be distributed by the FFS corporation and its official publicist, but when you’re a participant, they give you promotional rehearsal photos to share!

So, here are the outfits I’m modelling at the best fashion ticket in Nu Jyorck!

The Annex: Larkin Gown, for The Trunk Show, Purple

The Annex has such a way with things that are both sexy and simple. The cut of this gown may seem to leave little to the imagination, but it’s flared enough that it moves well on the dance floor, too. And the colours! Such an intense purple here, but the fabric is reflective enough that it appears to be several different shades. The lovely people at No Match handled the hair for this gown: it’s their No Promise style. The necklace is by Vae of The Plastik fame: it’s called Sawola. Zibska, such a deft hand with pastels, did the makeup; their Adelia line works perfectly here. Underneath the eyeshadow and lipstick, the skin painting was accomplished by the amazing folks over at 7 Deadly s{K}ins. Where would I be without them?

FSS 2 BLOG - 20

Here’s a closer view, mostly so you can get an idea of how the bodice on the gown falls.

FSS 2 BLOG - 2 (1)

The collaboration that is Silvan Moon Designs never fails to amaze and delight, and this classy gown is no exception. The pearl collar and neckline are the only adornments on a dress that is just perfectly cut with a great tulip shape. The delicate brocade fabric really sets off the dress, and once again No Match did some magic on my hair for this style: the look is called No Halo, even though I kind of felt as if I were wearing a halo because of this gorgeous Avaway Diadem the organisers put me in.

Ghee: Overblown Lace Pashmina, for Sense.

I love it when I get to play with more modern, “casual” clothing styles, even though I think you could wear this pashmina a lot of different ways. Here, it’s paired with an old pair of jeans from my personal wardrobe and some great boots from Empire, the Nelumbo Boots. The hair is by TruthAstra.

Silvery K: Soiree Beil Dress and Gloves

Such a fun dress from Silvery K! It comes with matching gloves as well. The shoes are from Pure Poison, the Aurora Sandals, and they might as well have been made for this dress. Hair by MonsoJunghwa. The FootPaw Industries necklace is from my personal collection.

FSS 2 BLOG - 16

Cazimi did an amazing job on my nails, don’t you think?

And mm, sexy lace detailing on the bodice and gloves from Silvery K.

Shanghai: Bella Gown, Rose (for Enchantment)

Now, I’ve seen this before at big Nu Jyorck events. Somehow, they think you’re “more fae” if you come from a “fae realm”. That is, if you come from the Metaverse equivalent of a cultural backwater, you’re somehow more legit as a fae. Which means that they’re always going to try and put you in fairytale gowns and wings and pretty headdresses because they think you’re somehow more honest in those outfits than a Nu Jyorck native would be. Well, that’s poppycock, of course, but I do love a great ballgown, and this is definitely one. The meticulously crafted petals set the whole dress off beautifully, and that skirt is so reflective you feel like you’re wearing liquid gold. Magika provided the hairstyle, Talk Like That, with the headdress by Elise (Silvia) and choker by Empyrean Forge (Majesty) that look like they were made for each other.

FSS 2 BLOG - 11

I think this is just a zoom of the same shot, but I like that you can see more of the headdress here.

Liz: Abrielle Dress, for Sense

Now, this is a dress I could wear almost anywhere, particularly as the hope of spring is alive in most places. Liz‘s Abrielle Dress has such fun lines, and I love the pearl embellishments. The shoes are from Like DesignDoll Shoes. They are also a lot of fun, and Nani did this incredible Kenna thing with my hair!

FSS 2 BLOG - 3

This dress just makes me smile!

Salt: Belle Gown, for Enchantment

Salt did a beautiful Belle Gown, and of course you know they had to put me in some legit wings sometime! These were crafted by Drastic, and are called Butterfly WingsDeLa did the hair for this outfit: the style is called Melora, which makes me think of that series of fantasy novels I loved as a little kid, the ones with all the dragons.

FSS 2 BLOG - 10

Here, you can see the great Cazimi Nails, but the necklace is obscured by my hand, I’m afraid.

I hope the necklace will be visible in some of the official Show photos: it’s from Bliensen & Maitai, and I’ve always liked their work.

FSS 2 BLOG - 7

Alter: Viviana Asymmetric Wedding Dress, for Sense

I wouldn’t necessarily wear this dress to get married in, but I’d wear it just about anywhere else. It’s from Alter, the Viviana Asymmetric Wedding Dress, and I love the high-low effect and the loveliness of the bodice here. The BareRose Lace Wings fit beautifully with it, and the jewellery is from Adorsy, the Emily necklace and armbands. These stunning shoes are from Cult: they’re the Desire HeelsExile created this hairstyle, called Jemma.

FSS 2 BLOG - 5

A closer look at wings, hair, and necklace? Yes!

So, that’s all eight outfits I was asked to model for this badly-kept-secret fashion show in the steamy underbelly of Nu Jyorck! It was a great experience. I hope they’ll ask me again sometime.

“Woefully Underdressed”

As Fae Awenia comes more into focus, I’m spending more and more time in the newer parts of the Realm and letting others do the last-minute items in preparation for when the paperwork’s all filed and we have an adoring public to think about! So many mundane Realms have opened themselves up to the Fae community; I can’t think why there are there aren’t more places like ours springing up.

Anyway, I had been so busy working on the trees in our little residential settlement I had barely seen the town centre in weeks, so I made arrangements to meet Nathaniel at one of the new, posh restaurants off the village green. Bran assured me when he made the reservation that the place was now fully staffed with professional (fae) waitstaff directly from Nu Jyorck, so I was looking forward to m visit.

The moment I walked in, I knew which table had been reserved for Nathaniel and me. I was only a couple of minutes early, but he was nowhere to be seen (no big surprise there).

“Madame, I’m sorry, but this table is reserved.”

“Madame,” said a soft tenor, “I’m sorry,” (he did not actually sound sorry), “but this table is reserved.”

“Yes,” I replied. “I know it’s reserved.” Oh, this was going to be fun.

The impeccably dressed waiter looked down at me. He had the soft features of a half-elf, possibly raised in a large enough city that his instincts about the blood wouldn’t be as well honed as ours in Faerie are. Or possibly he was just ignorant. He pasted on a smile. “Yes, Madame; we are expecting a very important guest tonight, and I’m afraid this table is reserved for that guest and their companion.”

I nodded. “Yes, I can see that,” I replied. “The table looks beautiful, by the way: well done.”

“And I’m terribly sorry, Madame,” (Again, he did not actually sound very sorry), “but I’ll have to ask you to choose another eating establishment for this evening. Our dress code is…” he searched his mind for a descriptor. “Well, you are woefully underdressed.”

I stood, and for the first time the waiter appeared slightly more relaxed. Perhaps he was relieved that I was going to comply with his request that I vacate the premises.

“So,” I said. “I’m woefully underdressed for the establishment?”

“So,” I said. “I’m woefully underdressed for the establishment?” It was hard not to laugh. The poor waiter was now worried he’d got the town nutter. Which, I suppose, I am.

“That is correct, Madame,” he said. He was starting to act nervous.

There was whispering from the kitchen; I suspected there were those who knew me in the ranks, taking bets on how the encounter might proceed. I heard a soft titter. Nobody approached the table: it was just me and the waiter.

“So if I changed my attire?” I fiddled with the button of my jeans, just to make him more nervous.

His eyes went wide. “Not here, Madame!” he exclaimed. “But certainly, if you wanted to perhaps go home, freshen up…..”

I stared into the nearby candle flame. “You mean….”

“I should look more like this?” I asked.

“I should look more like this?” I asked.

And then of course the penny dropped. There were high-fives and guffaws from the kitchen; the waiter’s face turned first purple, then red. Before he could catch himself, he said, “Oh, shit.” He swallowed. “I’m … I beg your pardon, Your Majesty.” He went down on one knee.

I moved closer to him. “Don’t worry,” I said. “Happens all the time.”

I moved closer to him. He took a step back. “Don’t worry,” I said. “Happens all the time.”

He looked up at me and swallowed. “If you’re sure, Your Majesty.”

“Of course,” I replied. “No harm done. Well, except for insulting your Queen, but that’s hardly serious, right?”

“It’s not as if there’s a painting of me here, yes?” I gestured casually to the painting of me on the opposite wall.

“It’s not as if there’s a painting of me here, yes?” I gestured casually to the painting of me on the opposite wall.

“Yes, Your Majesty, but you were…” He glanced up briefly.

“Yes, I know. Woefully underdressed. Tristan, is it?”

“That’s right, Your Majesty.” His knuckles were white against his britches.

“Bran!”

“Yes, My Lady?” My majordomo is so good about coming when he is called.

“This one needs to come and work for us, I think.”

The waiter (Tristan) turned even more pale.

“As you wish, My Lady. Come along, young Tristan.” Bran held out a hand to the young waiter, and when the fellow took his hand, they disappeared immediately.

“What?” I directed my remarks to the kitchen now. “It’s hard to find good help!”

“What?” I directed my remarks to the kitchen now. “It’s hard to find good help! That young man was ready to toss a Fae Queen out onto the streets, in order to protect the experience of the Fae Queen! I’ll have him as a footman for at least the next fifty years.”

Just then, Nathaniel came into the restaurant, having missed the whole scene (not unusual). “Don’t you look beautiful, my love!” he said, his eyes warming as he smiled at me. “I feel woefully underdressed next to you!”

Now, no one does bemused like my Nathaniel, so when the entire staff erupted into hysterics, he was the most bemused Husband and Consort ever.

Dinner was excellent, by the way.

Unicorns and Kitty Cats

What is it with all these dreams about being a unicorn?

What is it with all these dreams about being a unicorn? I must be cracking under the pressure of trying to create a Fae tourism Realm. And seriously. These unicorns I’m hanging out with are… well, OK. They are so cute I may die. They all seem to be meeting cats. Norwegian Forest Cats, to be exact, and the cats frankly look a little bit out of place here. But then so do I. Don’t I?

I mean, obviously I don’t belong here.

I mean, obviously I don’t belong here. Just because I have golden sparkles and rainbow eyes, and OK, ears and  a horn and pastel hair…. crap.

Let’s focus on how the kids are getting along.

Let’s focus on how the kids are getting along. The unicorns seem OK with the whole thing, and the cats seem…. well, they seem a little bit suspicious. But wouldn’t you be, if you were a dignified Norwegian Forest Cat and your world was invited by pastel rainbow unicorns? Mmhmm.

I don’t think the unicorn knows you’re having a staring contest with her, Ginger….

I don’t think the unicorn knows you’re having a staring contest with her, Ginger…. Then again, maybe she is just really good at staring contests. I’m not one hundred percent sure these guys blink. Maybe they only blink when I blink.

Since I seem to be stuck here for the time being, I should at least *try* to frolic.

Since I seem to be stuck here for the time being, I should at least try to frolic. Although it looks like Grey Cat over there is thinking of taking his personal staring contest to the physical level. Adorbs Pastel Unicorn seems nonplused. You know, I keep seeing people use the word nonplused to mean that someone is bothered, when it actually means the exact opposite. In published books. So weird. Anyway, nonplused means not bothered. Rather blandly, emphatically not bothered, to be exact. OMG, “New York Times Bestselling Author”, dictionary much? And that’s another thing. “New York Times Bestselling Author” rather obviously means something very different from “Is on the New York Times Bestseller List”. Of this I am sure. Sorry. That was a tangent and two rants wrapped up together.

It wouldn’t be so bad to be a majestic unicorn, I suppose.

It wouldn’t be so bad to be a majestic unicorn, I suppose. But all this glitter is making my face itch.

Still at it with the staring contest, I see….

Still at it with the staring contest, I see. I’ll bet that cat wouldn’t move for anything. Hey, Ginger! You’re not going to alter your focus for anything, are you? Not even if I… yeah, I could probably stretch out right here and fall asleep on your back and you’d keep on staring, wouldn’t you?

Let’s test that theory.

Mm, soft fur, what better pillow could a girl — I mean a unicorn — want?

Mm, soft fur! What better pillow could a girl — I mean a unicorn — want? Maybe I’ll wake up back in the castle and away from this weird dreamscape. I hope they let me keep the cats, though….
