Spiderweb

Once Upon A Time

Once upon a time, she cast her wishes
Into the air like feathers from an owl.

Like feathers from an owl

Like feathers from an owl, they twirled and blew
And who knows why the sky accepted them
And who knows for what purpose wishes drop
The air itself turned thicker, that she felt
But nothing else revealed itself: not yet.

Down the path she walked

And so she made her slow and careful way
Past the teller’s house, and through the door
All made of books, the substance of her life.
Beyond that first door, something felt awry,
As different as her mind from yesterday.

Something felt awry

Something felt awry, yes, out of placement,
She’d have said, if she’d been thinking clearly,
But she wasn’t. Just echoes of wishes
Occupied her mind: they were pervasive.
It was enough to make her think, Turn back.

Turn back, she thought

Turn back, she thought, but only in her head.
And as the path grew darker, she could feel
A weight upon her back. It grew and grew
Until she was convinced she’d have a stoop
Forever; that’s how heavy this weight seemed.

The Tree Of Shadows

She reached the Tree of Shadows just in time
To feel a finger tapping on her cheek.
Another finger tapped her shoulder, then
A rhythmic pulsing clear upon her back.
And so of course she turned to find the cause.

What have I done?

“I take them back!” she said. “Yes, every wish.
“I take them all back: I will keep them all!”
And from her back, the golden spider laughed.
“It’s good for you that I am not a cheat,”
The spider said. “You get one chance at this,
“No more. Are we agreed?” The spider clicked,
Then spoke no more with words. The wind went low,
As if the wood itself listened in then.

A close escape!

A close escape! She knew she’d made a deal
And felt the oath fix tight into her heart.
No more idle wishes: she’d have to work
At that one, but she knew she’d make the rule,
And keep it, if she wanted to survive
In her own space and keep her sanity.

I wanted to write something about the fickleness of wishes, and I remembered Joan Osborne’s song Spiderweb. It worked with a lot of great Halloween items, and the Nefekalum Tattoo gave our spider the perfect portal from which to emerge.

Spiderweb — Joan Osborne
I dreamed about Ray Charles last night
And he could see just fine
Dreamed about Ray Charles last night
And he could see just fine you know
I asked him for a lullaby
He said “Honey I don’t sing no more”
No more no more no more
Ray don’t sing no more
He said “Since I got my eyesight back
my voice has just deserted me.
No ‘Georgia On My Mind’ no more
I stay in bed with MTV.”
Then Ray took his glasses off
And I could look inside his head
Flashing like a thunderstorm
I saw a shining spider web

PROM-PIT Spot, Take 1

Music swells, a romantic chord progression working up from the fifth to the one, and then, a calming….

VOICEOVER:

She’s always wanted this. Your little girl. Your princess. Your… angel.

Well, maybe not your angel….

But it’s her dream, to wear a beautiful gown, to have her hair done, to step out with all her friends….

Even if, for her own safety and the safety of others, you have had to have a pocket universe installed in your home and calling the entities with whom she associates friends is….

Musical riff

VO: well, it’s a bit of hyperbole really, isn’t it? But she wants this. She needs this.

So innocent and vulnerable!

She wants to feel like any other seventeen-year-old. Innocent, vulnerable, catching the eye of that cute…. um, well, being across a crowded room. It’s important to her development as a teenager—and as a demon.

That’s why we created PROM-PIT. It’s the best way for your demon child to experience that traditional coming-of-age celebration party, the high school prom, without making national news or feasting guiltily on the entrails of the junior class for weeks afterward.

Perfectly Recalled

PROM-PIT turns that pocket universe into a beautiful formal dance dreamscape. Popular themes include:

  • Come Sail Away
  • I Will Remember You
  • Don’t Stop Believin’
  • Born This Way
  • Frozen Frolic
  • Spring Fling
  • A Midsummer Night’s Dream
  • Harvest Moon
  • Christmas Cotillion

First, we terraform and decorate! Don’t worry; we have safe holding spots in case your lovely one is a bit territorial!

Then, we’re there to document the occasion! Our photographers and videographers will take a few hours before the festivities begin so you and your loved ones will have a scrapbook to remember her the way she was on this beautiful night.

Candid Shots, Too!

We include candid shots of your precious spawn having genuine fun! Because every teenager deserves to have this much fun, at least on this one special night.

We’ll even take it to the limit!

We even know how to make sure we capture at least one photograph of her after she’s, well… broken a few rules and might be getting a bit too loud for the neighbours! Good thing those pocket universes are completely soundproof, isn’t it?

If your precious demon child is beginning to long for a “normal teenage experience,” whatever that is, why not give us a call? There’s no obligation, and our quotes are quick and reasonable.

These wonderful years are so fleeting, aren’t they? Our little darlings grow up so fast. They blood their first kills, mature, leave the nest (and maybe some survivors!), and move on into the world.

The most valuable thing in the world, in the universe, is a memory.

Make one this year, with PROM-PIT

When she’s on her own island, calling sailors to their dooms or luring the unwary in to her net of lust and lies, she’ll thank you for this beautiful scrapbook. You’ll each get a copy.

The Woman She Could Be

Call PROM-PIT today, and help her see the woman she could be. At least for a little while.

Thanks to all of you, she’s the perfect Demon Prom Queen!

I will be talking to the manager.

I answered them all. All the questions. I was truthful. I was clear. I did not mince words or skip things or dance around subjects. And it seemed pretty straightforward. You apply to be in a fairy tale, and you tell them what kind of fairy tale you want to be in, and you pay the deposit, and then they put you in the fairy tale.

Does this look like a castle to you?

Does this look like a castle to you? No? That’s right! It’s not a castle. I was very very clear about that. I said I wanted to live in a castle. Not once did I use the word cottage. Not once did I use the word hovel.

And yet, here I am.

And yet, here I am. It’s been a week. My notes go unanswered, even though I put them in the post box as indicated. The three women who live here and take care of me insist that I call them my Aunties. They call me “Little Fair One” to my face, and “Little Smart Mouth” when they think I can’t hear them.

At least something about this place is smart, hm?

At least something about this place is smart, hm? I mean, obviously, Sleeping Beauty at least in a couple of versions, lived with three transformed fairies who took care of her until she pricked her finger anyway, but that is not what I signed up for; it’s not what I paid a deposit for, and no-one seems to be responding to my strongly-worded notes. I don’t know how these people expect to keep a fairytale tourism business running if they offer such poor service.

Ooh, golly, let me show you round my humble home!

Ooh, golly, let me show you round my humble home! And I do mean humble. Here is the entry foyer; as you can see, there are no footmen, no servants, not even a mouse to take my cape. There is a hall stand, a stairway, and that’s pretty much it.

The Aunties spend a lot of time here in the kitchen.

The Aunties spend a lot of time here in the kitchen, which means I spend as little time here as possible. Would you believe they tried to get me to peel potatoes my first night? Potatoes? I explained to them that carbs are really bad for me. Auntie One (I have no idea what their names are) said, “Oh, well, I guess we can substitute with carrots.” Wow.

Their lounge is full of kitsch

Their lounge is full of kitsch and mementos from their pasts, maybe? Or maybe they’re just props. Pictures and silhouettes of former residents, Half a tonne of music boxes. I asked about some of them. “Oh, that was one of our favourite Little Fair Ones,” they said, about the blonde cherub on the wall there. “She went on to do great things.” Then One clucked at Three and Two gave them both a dark look and they all three shut up. At least there are books there, and at least they don’t bother me too much. Funny they haven’t even asked me about any balls or anything. I’ve been here a week. Maybe management has already contacted them about the mistake and they’re just waiting for the fix. Yesterday, a spinning wheel appeared by the lounge front window. I think they’re just torturing me now.

My little room might as well be for a servant!

And speaking of torture— my little room might as well be for a servant! It doesn’t even have a proper door. I mean, sure, it’s got some castle décor and there’s a pillow with a crown on it, but other than that, I’m experiencing the top of the wattle-and-daub line, here. And that’s not a compliment. I’m taking a lot of snapshots to make my eventual complaint more colourful when I finally make it back home.

Well, sometimes we just have to take matters into our own hands.

Well, sometimes we just have to take matters into our own hands, don’t we. I’m going upstairs with a pair of scissors, I am. And I’m ripping that crown off the pillow. That’s what I’m going to do.

It should be hours before the Aunties get back from market day.

It should be hours before the Aunties get back from market day. They were gone ’til nearly midnight last time, and they came back with hardly any shopping. The market must be a long way away and it must not have very much, is all I’m saying.

Out in the front garden, there’s a statue of a dragon guardian, and I’m sure he can help me out. Dragons always know what to do.

C’mon, help me out here!

C’mon, help me out here! I paid good money for this, and I know you must have a direct line to whomever’s in charge. Anybody with a big glowing orb is important; at least that’s what my GM always says. You don’t want to be named in my official complaint, do you? Just get me out of here, OK? This is not what I paid for.

* Way back in the long-ago, there was another kind of Enchantment event. These two items are from the Sleeping Beauty round of that event. I was, no pun intended, enchanted to find that I still had a few things from that event in my inventory, and it was fun to use them in photos for this one.

FaeWatch Interviews Wicked Fairy Carabosse At Last!

faewatch banner

Cherish Gelato [CG]: Greetings to you, Wicked Fairy Carabosse! It’s so lovely to be able to visit you at your room on the Mystical Moors. I always love it when I can get a real sense of the fascinating beings we cover.

Carabosse [CB]: Of course you are welcome in my home: if you were not, your life would be worth little right now. Also, as we discussed in our pre-interview emails, I would prefer not to be described as “wicked”. In fact, every action I take, every gift I bestow, every wish or curse I grant, has a logical and discernible reason. Not to mention these things take an incredible amount of work! The word “wicked” belittles my skill, expertise, and accomplishments and taints any description with a connotation I’ve always associated with wilful children and reckless criminals.

CG: Noted. But isn’t it true you cursed Sleeping Beauty because you were not invited to her christening?

SMD 2 BLOG

Misinformation spreads faster than a house fire in a wood elf village.

CB: Well, well, well. Misinformation spreads faster than a house fire in a wood elf village, doesn’t it? No; being disinvited to that wretched child’s christening was merely the last straw. I had performed some magical work for her parents, magic that was complex and cost me dearly in terms of time and effort, multiple times, and had not been paid adequately. They chose not to invite me to this event so they would not have to worry about some sort of public confrontation. And I can’t believe that after hundreds of years, we are still talking about this!

CG: I ask the questions my readers want to know the answers to! Stories have a way of staying alive, don’t they? For so much longer than we think. But let’s hear your side. Tell our readers about the work you did for Sleeping Beauty’s parents.

SMD 1 BLOG

This is my potions kitchen.

CB: Potions, mostly. This is my potions kitchen, and I spend a lot of time and effort getting things just exactly right. Don’t mind the floating apples: those are left over from another job I did—coincidentally at around the same time this whole fiasco started. Potions require deep knowledge, precise measurement, and exactly the right magical energy and timing. They are not simple spells, and this whole notion of fairy-wand wish-craft is just hogwash, frankly, a myth perpetuated by fairy godmothers looking for work at any cost. Nobody ever tells you how much Cinderella paid in the end for those glass slippers, I’ll tell you that.

SMD 3 BLOG

Each spell, each potion, requires incredible concentration.

CB: Each spell, each potion, requires incredible concentration, and my work does not come cheap. The King, whose name I’ve forgotten, and so has everybody else by this point, enlisted me to prepare two very difficult potions. First, he had enemies all over the place, so he needed potions for his warriors. That was the less difficult part. Secondly, and this is the real kicker, he and his wife, whose name I’ve also forgotten, had trouble conceiving a child. So, in fact, the most valuable and difficult potion I prepared for him was the potion that created the opportunity for Sleeping Beauty, Briar Rose, Talia, whatever you want to call the little urchin, to be born at all! For months I reminded him that payment would be due, and for months he ignored my messages. And then, when the child was finally born, healthy and perfect as promised in our contract, he conveniently forgot to invite me to her christening. It was the last straw.

CG: And that’s when you became the evil fairy of myth and legend!

CB: And that’s when I turned my anger into action. What do you do when subscribers stop paying for your publication? You stop sending it to them! When writers stop writing? You relieve them of their jobs. His Majesty had not paid for services rendered. The service I rendered created the circumstances under which that little girl could be born at all. I gave them sixteen years: I think that was generous of me.

SMD 4 BLOG

I gave them sixteen years: I think that was generous of me.

CG: But what about the other fairies, who modified the curse on Sleeping Beauty so that she would not die but merely sleep for a hundred years, or until True Love’s First Kiss broke the spell?

CB: Well, they chose their paths, didn’t they? We don’t really run in the same circles any more. But to answer the question I think you are actually asking, a curse modification requires nothing like the kind of preparation that the curse itself requires. So yes, this is simple fairy-wand wish magic, the kind you all wish existed every day. All little what’s her name had to do was have a little conversation with her wand.

SMD 5 BLOG

Just a stern conversation, like ‘Don’t you let that happen’!

I have conversations with my wand all the time. I’d say, ‘Don’t you’? but obviously, if you have a wand it’s just for show. This is a spectacular wand, isn’t it? One of the finest I’ve ever had. But even it needs a stern talking-to from time to time. You just can’t let them get away with anything.

CG: Well, all right, then! So the other fairy merely modified your curse because she didn’t have the power to take it away: that’s in the stories.

CB: Is it? Well, they got at least that right. And yes; that’s what she did. I suppose she might have been doing both me and the king a favour: if he paid up in the ensuing sixteen years of course I’d have lifted the curse. But no; he chose to be offended and — why do I even still talk about this? It’s been hundreds of years!

CG: Tell you what! Let’s talk about something else. Tell me about the quote behind you on the wall there, about eternal sleep. Is that a saying from one of the stories in which you feature?

SMD 6 BLOG

It’s not even from a fairy tale.

CB: No; it’s not even from a fairy tale! It’s from a silent film called  A Poor Little Rich Girl. The poor little girl is given some medicine to make her sleep so the maid can go out, and she has hallucinations, and one of them is Death coming for her. I just like the rhyme. It’s comforting somehow.

CG: Comforting. OK, I can see that. What do you do to relax?

CB: Here; I’ll show you! waves her wand

SMD 7 BLOG

I get comfy, I have a glass of wine, just like anybody else.

CG: Ooh! For our readers, Carabosse has just changed into a t-shirt and jeans! And I do like that t-shirt! Readers, the caption is, Everyone wants a fairytale wedding, but when I show up and curse their first born, suddenly I’m a jerk! So even though you don’t want to talk about that story, you wear a shirt like this to relax?

CB: I find it ironically funny. Do sit down and have a glass of wine, Miss Gelato, and perhaps we’ll read your Tarot.

CG: Ooh, don’t mind if I do! Readers, thank you for coming along with me as I speak with Fairy Carabosse. It’s been a lovely conversation, and I hope we can look forward to a few more int he future!

CB: It’s always good to get to tell my story. Do dismiss your photographer and let’s have a nice visit now.

An Orchard In Elemaria

When I came back from the rather less than formal ball held in the Drifts of Anamnesis, a desert which somehow became an oasis at exactly the right time, I admit I was feeling a bit drained and a bit sad.

Snapshot_003 BLOG

But who could possibly feel sad in this gown?

I know what you must be thinking, of course. ‘But who could possibly feel sad in such a beautiful gown, Your Fae Majesty’?

And you’d have a point. Silvan Moon Designs has created the most wonderful spring gown in an array of colours appropriate to the season. I was so proud to wear Dance of Spring to the informal ball; it almost didn’t matter that nearly everyone else was dressed rather less than formally. This periwinkle colour is to die for, isn’t it? And the gown’s crushed velvet falls so beautifully. I admit I sneaked out of the Fairelands to visit the carnival of fashion and hijinks that is We Love Roleplay, and that’s where I found this beautiful gown. I’m sure they still have a few left if you hurry to the carnival.

But the truth is, sometimes even when one is wearing a fabulous dress, it’s still possible to feel a bit sad. Even a lot sad.

Snapshot_008 test BLOG

There’s a voice inside my head

I’m one of those people with a running narration going on all the time: it’s like a voiceover in my head. And that night, the voice wanted me to remember and feel sad about the fact that the Great Fantasy Faire was ending for another year. And I did feel sad, and I did remember. I remembered the first chilling steps I took into Lamented Fens and how I grew to love that darkness. I remembered the sheer joy of Heliodor and the rush of being in a Realm of light. And the more filtered light of Autumnium, yes, that too. There was the darker call of Siren’s Lore, the inescapable bottoms of Melusina’s Depths, the madcap hysteria of Mistakes Were Made. I recalled dancing on turtles in Cassiopeia, listening to the words of great authors in the Drifts of Anamnesis, seeking the pleasure of the Bard Queen in Queensgarden. My surprise at entering Agra Adara and finding it was not at all what I thought it would be. Ambigula, a living art installation, Isle of Shadows with its scary giant bunnies, the frozen distance of Auxentios’ Pass, and of course the cosmic order (and chaos) of Zodiac. The stunning basin of the Spirit Valley of Kuruk will stay with me always, and of course, the Fairelands Junction bridged all these gaps and brought me closer to every Realm simply and easily, this time from a crystal desert cave. My two homes away from home, Elemaria and Lunafae, will be the hardest to leave behind. I’ve written from both these realms, and while the Fairelands were too vast this year for me to write from every one of them, I considered my next steps, and the next day, carefully, as I prepared for my last morning in the Fairelands.

Snapshot_012 BLOG

Morning in Elemaria

I awoke in Elemaria and descended the long staircase to the spiral star labyrinth at the forest junction. In spring, butterflies like to follow Fae royalty, so I had a few to contend with. I don’t mind them, just so you know. But they do get a bit buzzy.

In the glorious May sunshine, I sent the butterflies out to do their work. Flower pollination is serious business at this time of year. And I thought about pollination, about the kind of growth that irritates your nose and makes you briefly grumpy with life. What could I plant now, just as myself, that might be worthy of this land, these Fairelands, our kingdom and community, our spirit?

My fingers lingered over the spirit star of Elemaria woven into the bodice of my gown. This, my loves, is the Elemaria Spirit Gown, and I cannot tell you where to go and get it, for there is only one, and I am fortunate to wear it in the name if Elemaria and Light and the rising star of Hope. I don’t often showcase one-of-a-kind gowns, because I want you all to be able to find the treasures I show you, but I am now wondering why I do not do that. Perhaps over the next few weeks I’ll photograph some of the beautiful one-of-a-kind dresses I’ve collected over the years.

Forgive me for the fashion tangent: it’s just my nature. I was thinking what could I plant, what could I give, what would be a thing from me, more than the time (and, let’s be real, the money) I spend every year to help our Faire be a success and help us grow and help more and more people. What would that thing be?

Snapshot_013 BLOG

It came to me in the form of an apple.

And then it came to me, in the form of an apple. Because one thing my darlings, one thing I am told I’m very good at, is offering inspiration. I have a life that revolves around teaching, the arts, music, writing, and helping light the spark of creativity in folk both young and old.

So no this isn’t the apple you’re thinking of, even though I am come straight from fairy tale and myth to be with you here.

This is the apple of inspiration. You can see it in the emblem carefully painted on its curved edge. It’s an emblem you see if you ever look at any of my work. It’s an emblem you see if you ever look at me: it’s tattooed once on my real life wrist, and again in the belly of a symbolic salmon on my real life chest. This is the Awen, the symbol of divine inspiration, said to represent the three rays of poetic inspiration shining straight down from the gods themselves.

And so today, at the centre of the spirit labyrinth of Elemaria, I give you this apple. Here, I will plant it in the forest nearby. And because inspiration is not an ordinary apple, but a magical one, it may bear fruit sooner than you think.

Fairelanders all, be you world builders, paper pushers, music folk, organisers of parties, readers of books and tellers of tales, sculptors of meshes and images, willing to bring your sense of wonder, thank you. And don’t worry: this is not just my apple tree. This is your apple tree, too. You can sit beneath it with anybody you like, discover gravity in your own way, learn the ways of magic, marvel at the star within that mirrors, not-so-coincieentally, the spirit star of Elemaria I’m thinking of now. Take it with you. Plant your own. Bring back your baskets of apples to share with all the world.

Look at what we can grow.

Elemaria was one of 18 regions in the 2020 Relay For Life of Second Life Fantasy Faire. It was sponsored by Silvan Moon Designs and designed by Bee Dumpling and Solas Enchantment.

Although the fairelands exist only in our memories and our photographs once they’ve receded back into the mists, they are never forgotten. This year, the spirit that built those lands raised over $73,000USD for the American Cancer Society. We are a blessed and mighty community, and I am proud to be part of it. Good night, Fantasy Faire 2020. You were a beauty.

The Rabbit Hole in Isle Of Shadows

I was feeling sad. After all, it was the last day of the Faire, and soon I’d have to take a portal back to Awenia and pick up all the pieces I’d left dangling for the last two seasons. I flew up to one of the clouds that hover over the Fairchylde in Isle of Shadows, and, well, OK— I just kind of felt sorry for myself for a while.

‘No-one is attacking you. Calm down. I’m Kuro, and I’m taking you to your next adventure’.

‘My what’?

‘Your next adventure, Your Majesty’. The fox twitched its red eyebrows. ‘Here; let me jump up on to your shoulder’.

Kitties And Bunnies And Bears! Or, How I Visited The Spirit Valley Of Kuruk And Did Not Find My Centre Or Experience Perfect Bliss And Tranquility

You have to go. That’s what everyone says, anyway. Sometime in your life, where your life is defined as that period of existence between physical birth and physical death, you must at one time or another visit the Spirit Valley of Kuruk. I will note that visiting the Spirit Valley of Kuruk is a challenge, because it has appeared only once in my physical lifetime (that I know of).

Once I heard that the Spirit Valley was visible and within a day’s travel, I just dropped everything and went, all by myself. I felt it needed to be a personal and solitary journey.

The Spirit Valley’s Beauty Is Unmatched

One thing no-one will deny is that the Valley itself is singularly beautiful. With a landscape marked by stunning chalk paintings (which look to be well-kept by those who live there), it’s easy to just stand there, awestruck, when you first enter the basin. For me, the paintings were overwhelming. It was only after I had taken many of them in that I began to notice the rock formations themselves, the many paths and caves. It seemed made by a miracle, the sort of place where anything could happen. So, as I stepped into the Valley, I was prepared for a magical experience.

La-Dee-Dah!

And magic did occur soon after I took that first step. For there, asleep on a rock, was an adorable turquoise kitty cat with ickle pink ears! I couldn’t help it: I squealed.

Now, if you’ve ever woken up an adorable turquoise kitty cat with ickle pink ears (and who hasn’t, really?), you know that the adorable turquoise kitty, as a rule, does not like to be disturbed while she is sleeping.

There was hissing. Hackles were raised. Claws were displayed. Clearly, the kitty was just here for the sunlight and nap spots.

“Fine,” I said, and made to walk away. Everyone knows the first thing you have to do in the Valley is take a picture with the Big Bear by the singing bowls at the big fire circle. I’m not really sure if he has a name: I was really just there for the photo opp.

Halfway across the circle, I heard a loud ‘MEOW’, and sure enough there was the adorable turquoise kitty! She was trotting up behind me fast. ‘Look, you!’ she said. ‘I don’t know what you are, Miss Biped, but you woke me up, so now I’ll be visiting the Valley with you. That means you have to feed me.’

Well, all right then. I was in the company of an adorable, verbal turquoise kitty cat with a sarcastic streak. Super. I may sound sarcastic, but in fact it was very nice to meet a talking kitty cat; I’ve always wanted to know what’s on their adorable little minds.

The Obligatory Tourist Photo!

And here we all are, mugging for the camera with one Big Bear and one Little Bear! This photo cost me five dollars! Five dollars for a single photo? I suddenly began to wonder about the spiritual basis of the Spirit Valley itself, or at least of the Photo Bear, who had impressive looking teeth.

Still, looking up was a treat. So I did that.

Still, looking up was a treat. So I did that instead of thinking about how many photos I wanted to pay that kind of money for. Luckily, my mobile phone is easily stashed inside even the smallest vest, which I might have been wearing that day.

Time to plan our next move!

Still, I was here, and I was going to see as much of the legendary Spirit Valley as I could before nightfall. Bears make me kind of nervous at night, if I’m honest.

‘We’re going over there!’ said the adorable, talking turquoise kitty cat.

‘What if I don’t want to?’ I had not yet realised that one does not argue with an adorable, talking turquoise kitty cat.

‘Well, La Dee Dah says you do!’ said the cat. And she hoisted her tail and ran up the mountain, up a roundabout trail, and toward a cave.

‘Caves are dangerous!’ I called out. ‘Is that your name, then? La Dee Dah? That’s a mouthful. Can I just call you “La” for short?’

‘No!’ came the sharp reply, followed by a loud yowl. ‘Shit! I fell’.

Great, adorable talking turquoise kitty cat has a potty mouth. I sighed and followed. ‘Do you need help? I could pick you up.’

‘Touch me at your peril, you winged abomination!’

I chose to avoid peril and watched as she clawed her way out of the ravine into which she’d fallen.

Up and up we climbed, until we came to…

Bones. Lots and lots of bones.

There were skeletons. Like humanoid skeletons. In chains. ‘La Dee Dah!’ I shouted. That was going to take some getting used to. ‘We do not sit in skeletal laps! You don’t know who’s been gnawing on those bones!’

It was at this point I noticed that her eyes were rather glow-y. I feared the worst.

Instead, she just muttered, ‘Spoilsport’, and stalked off in another direction. ‘I guess you want to see the Pretty Pretty River’, she said.

Pretty Pretty River

As a matter of fact, I did, so I didn’t argue and followed her down the steep slope onto what felt once again like mostly level ground. Now, you may think La (I can call her that in my head) was being sarcastic, since she’d been mostly sarcastic since we met, but in fact the river in the Spirit Valley of Kuruk is called the Pretty Pretty River. It may be translated from some language that involves a lot of tonal humming and clicks, or maybe a bear roar? I don’t know.

It lived up to its name, though. There were many lovely trees and even a frog carved out of the rock. ‘Look, La Dee Dah’, I said, ‘his eyes are the same colour as your fur’!

She didn’t answer me, or really even acknowledge that I’d spoken, so intent was she on getting back to the great circle in the central part of the basin.

This is my long-suffering look

I sighed the sigh of the long-suffering Divine Being who has just had her view of the Pretty Pretty River cut short. And I followed her, because what else was to be done, really. She was so small she might get hurt out there alone. There were, after all, bears.

From this side, the big scary bear rock looked much more menacing.

From this side of the circle, the bear rock looked much more menacing. I tried to concentrate on the Pretty Pretty River, which does actually run all the way round the bottom of the Valley; I didn’t expect I’d get much closer to it for the duration of our time together.

Unmatched Natural Beauty

Even though the trip wasn’t turning out the way I’d imagined, I couldn’t blame it on the scenery. As we turned toward the circle again, I was struck by the megalithic stones that flanked the entrance to the circle from across the Pretty Pretty River. I took a breath. La was having none of my hesitation; she just romped on out to the centre of the meadow, not bothering to walk the spiral in or out. Apparently the wrath of the bear gods does not descend upon adorable talking turquoise kitty cats. Apparently.

Once again, she ran ahead of me. It’s a good thing she’s so brightly coloured; I’d surely lose her if she had any sort of natural camouflage. Another reason to make sure she stayed with me: I suspected that after dark she’d glow in the firelight, and some bear would be all, ‘Look, an adorable turquoise marshmallow’! I still had to sprint to keep up.

Step away from the bunny!

I found her cuddled up with a bunny. A bunny. Oh, I’d heard the rumours, rumours that the Fairelands this year were overrun with bunnies, possibly spawned by the very likely evil blue glowing globe in Zodiac. I’d also heard rumours that they were being manufactured by the Fairchylde Herself, or at least by one of those insane Fantasy Faire Radio DJs. Those folks are weird, baby. But we love them. I personally did not love them enough to forgive them for the Plague Of Bunnies the Fairelands were currently experiencing, but of course your mileage may vary. It is also suspected that Princess Sonya Of Critter Meadow might be involved, but she just seemed so nice that one time I met her. But while I was sifting through conspiracy theories in my head, La was still cuddled up with a bunny. A bunny!

‘La! We do not cuddle bunnies‘! I shouted. The accomplice bunny just glared at me balefully as I spoke. They have great big teeth, you know, bunnies. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if that’s what really happened to the skeletons up there on the cliffside.

‘I can’t hear you’! La replied. She began grooming herself.

‘Fine’, I muttered. ‘La Dee Dah! We do not cuddle bunnies!’

The adorable talking turquoise kitty cat stood up, arched her back, and hissed at me. ‘You are not my real mum’, she said. ‘I do what I want’. She sneezed. ‘And I have decided that we are going to climb up the other side of the basin because I want to meet a real bear’.

Oh, good; another hike. Luckily, I have wings.

How about this one?

‘How about this one’? I suggested. ‘He looks important’.

‘Can you not smell‘? she replied. ‘Or do they not teach you the difference between stuff that’s real and stuff that’s been carved out of stone and is some kind of bear god where you come from’? There may have been eye-rolling. ‘I’m gonna need a nap’.

I had heard that cats sleep 12-15 hours a day. ‘How long a nap do you need’?

‘Dunno. But after that we’re going back home and you’re going to feed me’.

I seem to have a new life-mate.

It didn’t take long for La to find the bear she was looking for. After a short exchange in growls, grunts, and paw movements, they came to an understanding.

Nap Time!

I ended up sitting on a pillow next to a bear deep in meditation and probably afraid to move for fear of cat claws, for four solid hours while La took a nap.

A Conspiracy in Elemaria?

Elemaria_021 (1) BLOG

Elemaria From Afar

From a Distance, the Fairelands Realm of Elemaria looks stately, doesn’t it? I suppose that’s why I, Your Fae Queen, was drawn to it. I do love castles. And as I’ve been absent from my own Realm for some months now, I was looking forward, when I first arrived at the Great Faire (regrettably late this year for reasons beyond my control), to walking the stately halls and pathways of a good, old-fashioned castle.

And it’s true, the pathways are stately, and the bridges are divine, and the views out over the sea are spectacular. And I don’t even need to mention the shopping to you: if you’re here are the Faire, you know that there is nothing better than Fairelands shopping. A balm to soothe the soul, I think, is shopping. If I ever get to the point where I’m tired of ball gowns and flowing skirts, just take me back to Awenia Faerie and turn me into a statue.

Elemaria_003 (1) BLOG

The thing is, it was sunny!

It was indeed sunny, a perfect day in early May, and so close to The Author’s birthday. I spent only a little while exploring the bridges and pathways (and possibly buying an entirely new spring wardrobe), but then the seemingly endless gardens called, and so that’s where I found myself, just at midmorning.

Some of you may have already heard from Fen, who I suppose you know better as The Amazing Catwoman. She’s been filling in for Wulfrich as my chief of security. He has gone on a long quest, and if I’m honest I don’t know if he’ll ever be back. The position’s as good as hers, and even though she still seems uneasy with me, I’m glad we’ve resumed our friendship. She’d been here ahead of me, scouting the Fairelands, and when we met my first morning here, she delivered some news that I must confess shook me slightly:

Elemaria_004 (1)d BLOG

There are bunnies. Everywhere.

“Gwennie,” she said. “There are bunnies. They are everywhere.” She paused for effect, or maybe because she’s never been super articulate, poor dear. “I am not making this up. I have only seen one or two Realms without bunnies, and I think they might just have been hiding out or something. I suspect a conspiracy.”

I considered. “Is it that thing where that huge drill in Auxentios’ Pass is meant to cause magical ailments and all manner of temporal anomalies?” I wondered.

“I think that’s a rumour,” she said. “I suspect that weird globe in Zodiac. Or, maybe…. maybe….” and she drew a finger across her lips, “I think maybe Sonya has something to do with it.”

And wouldn’t you know it; as soon as I started exploring the Realm’s generous and lush grounds, there they were. Bunnies.

Elemaria_016 (1) BLOG

This would require rumination.

This, I decided, would require rumination, and so I searched around for an out-of-the-way spot. Luckily, Elemaria boasts many of these: you could spend weeks here and never end up in the same quiet space to think.

The first such place I found had only half as many bunnies as the place before, so I settled in.

Elemaria_010 (1) BLOG

Thinky Thoughts

What possible significance, I wondered, could a large number of bunnies in the Fairelands have? Beings who’ve seen less of the magical world than I have might just think it had to do with spring, but I was not convinced. Also, there was a bunny, just over there. Just staring at me.

Elemaria_012 (1) BLOG

I ducked into the nearby cave

I ducked into the nearby cave to avoid the bunny’s disconcerting gaze. Another time, if I visited here, I might wonder who might have made this place, explore the nooks and crannies, but if I’m honest, I was just relieved not to find any errant rabbits within.

Elemaria_013 (1) BLOG

A Conspiracy Of Bunnies?

Now, everyone knows that the collective term for rabbits is a nest, or that’s what my human granny told me back before all this crap started. But something tells me these rabbits are in fact a conspiracy.

And it all started to roll around in my head. Huge steampunk drills that may be shrunk down and worn as hats. Weirdly glowing blue zodiac balls. No double-entendre intended, I swear. Spring. Propogation. The possibility of poems with an acrostic spelling out S O N Y A  M A R M U R E K hidden away in some dusty corner of the Heliodor Library.

My therapist tells me I may overthink things. She says instead of letting a thing roll around in my head for hours, sometimes years, I could, if I thought about it, expend much less energy and simply confront the source of my worry, let fate take its course (though I have heard recently that fate does not in fact exist), and just move on with my life.

Fine.

Elemaria_017 (1) BLOG

Rabitterrogation

I decided I might as well confront the closest bunny and ask what was up with all this.

Unfortunately for me, the bunny wasn’t interested in talking. But it was a nice rock and a lovely day, so I had a bit of a sun before moving on.

Elemaria_028 (1) BLOG

They’re everywhere!

Everywhere I went, there were more and more bunnies. Finally, I found a set of steps that led up to a secluded spot that I imagined must be just right for some meditation. And there was food on the table, so I had some lunch. Might as well, right?

Luckily, we Fae Royals are not encumbered by the rule that one must wait an hour after eating before swimming.

Elemaria_030 (2) BLOG

I might have said, “Cowabunga!”

I might have said “Cowabunga!” but I’ll deny it if you ask me. Ah, but what a lovely end to a day’s exploration of Elemaria. It was sure to be the first of many forays there: you all know how much I love a beautiful garden, and Elemaria, I decided, is really not a stately palace after all: It is a stunning garden, a forest, a stream system, and apparently a bunny sanctuary, all conveniently housed within the walls of a stately palace.

Fate In Lamented Fens

Snapshot_019 (1) BLOG

Fate steps up from the depths

Will you know it? Will you know that moment, the one where Fate turns? So many folk, they don’t know it, even when they look back on it. If only, they think, if only I had known. If only my fate had made itself more clear to me.

Oh, my sweet child.

Hello.

Deceptive Moonlight

You have asked, and I have come. We are together now. Don’t mind the colour of the sky: here in the Fens the sky is always so close. It’s only that we cannot touch it. Well, not just yet.

Now, look through the moss, and you will see the most extraordinary things.

Snapshot_012 (1) BLOG

Turn back?

Turn back, you say? Turn back to the boardwalk, the path, linger beneath the glass jar lights? Oh, but it’s so simple there. And you are not simple, are you? No? I thought not.

IMG_0668 BLOG

A compromise

Let’s go just a little off the path. Just a few steps. That’s easy enough for you, isn’t it?

IMG_0669 BLOG

Closer

We live in a modern age, surely. You don’t fear the dead, do you?

I myself enjoy the mist here, how it wraps around my ankles. Little cat feet. That was Carl Sandberg, you know. A poet; he was a poet.

Now that you’re here….

Now that you’re here, let’s discuss your fate.

Fate, you see, is very simple. It’s like the path we just left.

You want Fate to be a thing that operates completely outside you. And that’s comfortable, isn’t it, the thought that Fate itself just steps in and makes your life what it is and will be.

But really, if you think about it, there is no Fate. There is you, and your choices. Fate might be just a lamp, a minuscule event, or feeling, or experience that pushes you toward one thing or another. So Fate is a lamp.

And I? I am also a lamp, of sorts.

And I? I am also a lamp, of sorts. You’ve been following me all this time, haven’t you?

It’s only that, when you turn, I turn. And you won’t see me. You won’t.

Who is watching you?

But I’ll see you. I’ve got good eyes like that. Very, very good eyes.

The sky. The water. The Edge.

One day, not today but someday, I’ll invite you to come with me and touch this sky of mine. The sky is everywhere, you understand. It’s all around us. It’s only that you can’t touch it, not yet.

But when you’re ready, take my hands.

It’s only one step from here.

Credits and Notes:
Location: Lamented Fens is one of 18 regions in this year’s Relay for Life of Second Life’s annual Fantasy Faire. The region is sponsored by The Forge and designed by Riven (lrriven) and Skeleton (kitori unplugged), with quest written by the team and coded by Remnant Ashbourne. It is a creepy wonder of a Realm, full of moss and live oak trees and more depths than you could imagine down below the surface of that cloudy water. Lamps to guide you, voices to compel you, a choose-your-own-adventure sim quest, what more could a Fairelander desire? It’s only one step from here. You too can visit Lamented Fens, but be sure to do it before the 10th of May, when the Fairelands will, as every year, dissolve back into the Mists.
