Staircase

I had an American friend in uni who told me she grew up thinking that staircases were magical and only wonderful and important people, magical people, would have staircases. I asked her, weren’t there stairs in any of the buildings you visited back in your home country? And she was all, sure, but not like magical staircases. Not like in England.

Is this a magical staircase?

I’m not sure if this staircase would make my uni friend’s list of magical staircases. In truth, I’m not even sure she actually had a list. But I like it.

Why do I like this staircase?

Why do I like this staircase? Well, I like it because it doesn’t go anywhere. Seriously—it just appeared one day, and there’s absolutely nothing at the top of it. Not a thing.

Senzafine Dress ME 2020 - 3 BLOG

Vexed

Initially, it vexed me. I was vexed. Because I got to the top of this staircase and there wasn’t a thing there. Like, no door. Just a ceiling and some walls and no-where to go but back down….

And I kept trying to figure out if it was some magical thing I wasn’t getting, but of course in the end I had to resign myself to the fact that here was a staircase that didn’t go anywhere, and that’s what things are like in Faerie, and I don’t know why I didn’t just accept it in the first place.

Senzafine Dress ME 2020 - 2 BLOG

Nicer on the way down

In fact, it was much nicer on the way down. Because I could say, ‘I’ve been up that magical staircase’, and lift my eyebrows a little. And then sit back and smile as of course everyone decided that they too must go up this staircase. I wonder if they’ll come to me, all vexed. ‘Why did you send us up that staircase, Your Majesty’? they’ll ask. ‘But I didn’t send you up that staircase’, I will reply. ‘I don’t recall passing any edicts that required anybody to go up that staircase’.

Now, I feel much better. Really, going up and down a useless, magical staircase in a Senzafine gown would make anybody feel better. You should try it, if you’re the sort of person who likes gowns.

Look! A Squirrel!

thought it was time to give a more complete overview of Awenia Faerie and how it’s changing this summer, and of course as your Queen it made sense (to me, anyway) to start in the Royal Book Garden.

Squirrel - 1 BLOG

My New Favourite Place

The Royal Book Garden itself is linked to the Book Forest, of course; these places grow organically out of one another in Faerie. Thoughts Are Things, we say, and so I thought one day that it would be lovely to have a less manic version of the book forest to which I could take visiting Fae royalty—because some of them are just so snooty that if you don’t spread out a formal lunch for them they feel slighted. And honestly, I think they enjoy feeling slighted, some of them. It always makes me laugh when I say ‘honestly’, because the fact is I am unable to be dishonest, being Sidhe.

And just never mind what’s going on over my shoulder: it’s somewhat troubling on that far island. There are noises. I’ll investigate it later. For now, I would love to show you these incredible storybooks that have appeared on stumps and little bookshelves around the edges of the Garden, and we’ll also take a look at some of Kilik Lekvoda’s beautiful statuary, and then—wait! Did you sense that? Of course you didn’t: you’re not here.

Is there a Squirrel on my Tea Table?

Is… Is there a squirrel on my Tea Table? Do you ever sometimes get the feeling that there is a squirrel on your tea table? Happens to me all the time. Of course, there never is…

Squirrel - 3 BLOG

There is! There is a Squirrel on my Tea Table!

But this time… There is! There is a Squirrel on my Tea Table! Look, you little ingrate! That’s my tea and more importantly (yes, I can see you!) my honey!

It’s unacceptable. Little woodland animals do not get to just trot in here and have their way with my lovely food and sweets…

And I’m always giving in to them; I always do it, because they’re so cute! Oh, look at those big brown eyes! Who’s a doe-eyed little chonk? You are!

Squirrel - 4 BLOG

I cannot resist those eyes!

Yeah.

So then I sat down and had tea with the squirrel. His name’s Bernard, by the way. And he’s a bachelor. I don’t know why that matters, but he was emphatic about it.

I don’t remember what I was going to say. Where was I going with all this? Nope; totally lost the plot. Oh, well: I’m sure I’ll remember later.

How To Remember The Perfect Storm

This is the story of a rooftop and a memory, a memory I remade because it needed to change, and I will start from the end and then jump right back to the beginning, because I’ve recently learned that not everyone does this.

I am a historical revisionist, I guess. Because here is the memory I remade. It’s my first trip to Røyken since—well, since some things changed a bit in the universe. I guess you could say the universe itself is somewhat of a historical revisionist, but that’s another topic for another time.

First, I’ll show you the finale of the remade memory. The thing about remaking a memory is to change only the parts that give you distress and keep all other details exactly the same, if you can.

London Rain Roof - 4 BLOG

Dancing on a Røyken Roof

Sometimes as I’ve aged, I’ve had a nostalgic longing to revisit the city I grew up in, which you probably know as Røyken, but in my mind is always known by its alternative name, London. You might even meet some people there, should you ever visit, who prefer to call their city ‘London’, but I suspect those folk, or I should say their desire to speak that name, are a dwindling breed.

Anyway.

I went to the Skredder School, which if you know Røyken you may think of as a bit posh. I really went there because my adoptive parents were both employed by Gullsmed, and the school was about halfway between their work and our home. That sounds flippant, but my mum used to swear it was true. They’d only just moved to Røyken when I arrived on the scene, and they knew next to nothing about schools, so they went with the (thankfully accurate) recommendations of their new coworkers. I guess it helped that their coworkers were all university lecturers.

Skredder was made up of a bunch of buildings, all from different times and aesthetics because the school grew and expanded over the years, but my home base building was the arts and humanities school, and I’d call it Brutalist now; when I was a kid we just called it ugly. But it was cheap and functional, I guess, and the building was maybe from the 1960s? I don’t know. And people call a lot of things Brutalist when they’re not actually. I am probably one of those people.

Anyway.

London Rain Roof - 3 BLOG

The Roof

If you knew the way, you could get on to the roof of the Skredder arts and humanities building. And I knew the way.

London Rain Roof - 8 BLOG

Rain

My memories of the Skredder roof are all about quiet times, sitting up there writing, listening to the hum of industrial fans, being alone. I wasn’t always alone; it was just a big roof.

Anyway, it was school holidays on this visit. So I figured, I’ll go up to the roof.

It started pouring at some point. I don’t usually mind the rain, but on this day as it moved toward evening I just wasn’t prepared for it.

London Rain Roof - 9 BLOG

It just figured.

I guess I had expectations. Anyway, it pissed me off. And the roof really was empty, and the rain came down in sheets, and my glamoured umbrella at least was pretty, but it made me remember.

London Rain Roof - 6 BLOG

Isolation

It made me remember that I did not spend all my time on the Skredder roof happily writing and planning and singing and dancing like some manic pixie dream girl.

The fact is, I was a lonely kid. And my efforts to fit in and be like the girls I knew at school took work and energy. There were a lot of tears, I remember. I remember lots of tears from when I was in school, and then suddenly there were tears again. Me, an ageless Sidhe, bawling my eyes out on a rooftop.

London Rain Roof - 10 BLOG

Nothingness

There was this sense that with the cloud cover so thick and the rain so dense and the light so dim and blue, that nothing beyond the roof could possibly exist, nothing. Because school wasn’t in session, there weren’t even any lights through the skylights.

I remember the sky darkening and that smell, ozone, coming. And I was so angry, so full of resentment for this force I could not control in Røyken. Too many variables in a big city, too many warring magical factions: one wrong weather change could start a witch war, and there is nothing so messy as a witch war. Never mind that I am not actually a witch: witches have this idea that they are the only existent magic, and even if I’d done the whole thing with good old OTO precision, the witches, particularly Røyken witches, if I’m honest, would just assume the change came from one of them and fight first, ask questions later.

So years later, when I think of that visit to Skredder, all I had was this sorrow, this self-pity, and this completely tangental rage toward Røyken trad witches. It made me sad and angry, and it threatened to make me forget the good things about the roof.

London Rain Roof - 1 BLOG

So I took this moment.

I have never liked that memory, of me on my old school roof, crying. So I remembered it again. I took this moment. This one, right here. I scrunched up my eyes and tasted the air, reached out a hand, to see if it would really rain—and of course that’s when it did.

One moment, one change.

London Rain Roof - 2 BLOG

Joyful anticipation?

What if, instead of scrunching my eyes up and meeting the rain with anger, I remembered it like this: I smelled ozone. The sky darkened. Ooh, a roof rain storm! I stretched out my hand to feel the first drops. And I looked up into that endless sea of clouds with anticipation and not resentment.

London Rain Roof - 7 BLOG

A Solid Plan

And then, with that one moment changed, Rainy Roof Day Me looks at Today Me and an understanding passes between us. We have changed the beginning, the introduction, and now the rest of the story will write itself, and we will have a happy ending and a dance on the roof of the Skredder arts and humanities building.

And then, you see, it will be OK to go back to Røyken, in no small part because I will have forgiven the witches.

From The Author: Because in Gwyneth’s story people like significant ex Richard can read her blog, I won’t be referring to the Event in which the veil between the ‘natural’ and ‘supernatural’ worlds was blown to pieces, thus creating a new reality in which people have ‘always known’ about the other parallel worlds that exist alongside theirs. She will couch it in vague language, but as a world walker, she is necessarily aware that something has changed, and since it started with her house on White Owl Island being blown up, she feels personally affronted by it, so it comes up a lot. On public social media, everyone is an unreliable narrator, and Gwyneth is no different.

Storm’s Coming

Dear Richard,

I got your email. I mean, obviously I got it; else I wouldn’t be replying to it. You can probably see your email at the bottom of my email or something. I don’t know. I guess it depends on your client and your preferences, but yeah. Hi.

It’s morning here

It’s morning here, or I guess it is since I haven’t been up all that long and I’m still in my jammies. My jammies have unicorns. I have matching slippers. If I had to do all this myself, I’d never be organised enough to find my jammies, much less matching slippers, but there you have it. You say you’re lucky. I certainly have had a lot of luck over the past several years. Sometimes good luck, sometimes bad luck, but luck I have had.

The family balcony

This is the family residence balcony, though I do have guests here from time to time: everywhere else is so formal. It’s comfortable this time of year, even though that sky’s beginning to darken somewhat so I’ll have to keep a look out for Weather. I’m a lot less bothered about weather than I used to be, though. There’s a daytime moon here, because I like the moon so I put one there. It just makes me smile.

Two paragraphs in and I’m rambling already. I don’t know what to say to you, if I’m honest. The answer is no; I haven’t Googled you. At first, it was because I was afraid to. If you can see back to the very beginning of the blog, when I first came away, you’ll see that I went to a place where I was discouraged from checking anything about my own potentially contemporary life out. So I left it, and so much was happening it just seemed the right thing to do, to let it all happen as it happened. I didn’t want to see my own funeral notices. I didn’t want to know if that life had ended completely, and where I was there seemed such a lot going on. The more I talk, the more I realise there’s no excused. I should have tried to find you.

Dear Richard Edit 1 - 4 BLOG

You are welcome

Of course, you are welcome to come to Awenia. If you coordinate with me ahead of time, I can offer you a place to stay. There’s space for guests in the Residence, but I don’t know if you’d like it. I’m thinking of one of the floating guesthouses; we have a few that are broken up into nice flats. I can’t put you in the Treehouse, because visiting Fae dignitaries get all puffy if they think that residence isn’t reserved for them.

Dear Richard Edit 1 - 1 BLOG

Floating

Yes, I think the sky is definitely darkening. Behind me here you can see the steps to the Treehouse, and just the edge of one of the floating guesthouses. They’re quite nice.  I can’t concentrate on my book. I don’t know why I brought it out here. Something about floating in the lagoon on a nice day, even if there’s a storm coming, makes me feel peaceful and I need a bit of peace right now. You’ve probably seen the statue on some of our literature: lots of people are referring to it as the Awenia Statue, but really he’s called The Last Hope. He’s a symbol of our Realm, I guess, even though he came from somewhere very far away.

You seem very far away, even though I’m looking at photographs of you now on my iPad, and thank you for the link to your author site: I’ll start reading the first one tonight.

Dear Richard Edit 1 - 2 BLOG

Dabbling

I’m so pleased you embraced writing. I’ve always been such a dabbler in things I never could choose a path to follow that wasn’t the one I stumbled on to while dabbling. And you’ve had a journey that I hope we can talk about when you come to visit Awenia.

“When” is such a funny word, isn’t it? You will have heard that time flows differently in different Realms, but it’s an odd concept until it smacks you in the face, I think. And there’s no easy way to say this, so I’m going to smack you in the face, I reckon. You say it’s been thirty years, where you are. For me, by my counting anyway, it’s just coming up on eight years since the last time we saw one another. That sounds like dancing about. It’s just coming up on eight years since the accident that led me to cross the river into Jasper and begin to discover myself as I was born and not as I was made. As for why I didn’t reveal my Fae nature back then, the truth is I didn’t know it, and that’s a conversation we can have over dinner or coffee or whatever you fancy, but it’s not something I can write down because it will make no sense written down.

Now, I am going to pop off the Rosé floatie and get myself a cup of coffee at the portal café before the rain comes. Then, I think I’ll settle down with a nice ebook I’ve just downloaded. After all, it’s nearly sundown and I’m still in my jammies.

Dear Richard Edit 1 - 7 BLOG

A hope

Our statue is called The Last Hope, but I have many hopes. One of them is that when you cross through our portal and into Awenia that you’ll find many things to like here, and that you and I will find many things to talk about. Probably I’ll wear something a bit more presentable than pyjamas, though.

Dragon Mani-Pedi!

Sometimes, you’ve gotta indulge. That’s exactly what I was thinking when one of my dearest friends in this Realm or any other, Danya, otherwise known as the irrepressible DJ Fae, pinged me to see how I was doing and if maybe I was free for lunch sometime this week.

So I said, “I think I have a better idea! There’s this amazing new salon I’ve heard about where you can have your nails done….by dragons!”

“I am so totally in,” said Danya. So I sent a Wisp and made an appointment….

…And that’s how we found ourselves here!

And that’s how we found ourselves here, at the Pink Bar, surrounded by tiny dragons whose duty it was to pamper us from head to toe.

The little purple guy in the air in this photo seemed to be the ringleader (and actually, he also seemed to be the only one who could speak English, which meant he’d have been the master of ceremonies to me even if another dragonet was really in charge).

We each had two dragonets assigned to our feet: one to wash and one to primp and polish, one dragonet to each hand, and a couple more who seemed to be there just in case any of the others needed anything.

dragon mani-pedi blog - 3

How has dragon mani-pedi not always been a thing?

“How has dragon mani-pedi not always been a thing?” I asked.

The purple ringleader dragonet (pictured here on my head) replied, “Well, we only just arrived in this Realm, and you know: we’re entrepreneurs. We see a spot in the market, we take it!”

I laughed until I realised the green dragonet on my shoulder was pulling my hair. “Ow!”

“That’s a scalp massage, not a clip-and-char,” said the purple one. He followed this up with a diatribe in the hissy-chirpy sound-string that must have been their native tongue.

dragon mani-pedi blog - 2

Ooh, talk about a great scalp massage!

“Ooh, talk about a great scalp massage!” Danya could barely keep up her end of the Fae Club Scene (yes, there is one) gossip, she was enjoying herself so much. “But seriously: that is my champagne, wee scaly dude, and if you stick your nose in there, you’re not getting a tip!”

“Wait. How many beds did you say are in that Chinese garden?”

Once little green what’s his name got back to massaging instead of trying to eat my hair, I had to ask: “Wait. How many beds did you say are in that Chinese garden? Like, bed-beds? Not flower beds? How many bed-beds do you need in a garden?”

It turned out that neither of us really knows how many bed-beds you need in a garden, but we figured having a garden bed-bed (not flower bed) count would be kind of fun. Next outing: Sorted!
