Sweet Disillusion

Get involved with a mortal, they said. It’ll be fun, they said. You’ll get to see all sorts of amazing things, they said.

Is this amazing?

Is this amazing, or what? I’m gonna go with, or what.

I swear, you have a beautiful whirlwind courtship following your debut at Queen Charlotte’s, a classy wedding in Tuscany (cost a quarter of a million pounds; that’s classy, right?), and a honeymoon in the Maldives, and then he tells you it’s time to get back to “real life”. Real Life?

Sorry, what?

Sorry, what?

Real Life is apparently when you move into a tiny flat in Nu Jyorck and he has to spend the whole weekend setting up a new office for his dad’s business while you…

Unpack?

Unpack?

Unpack? You have got to be kidding me.

And he’s all, ‘Honey, you’ll love the place; it’s so retro! Fittings and fixtures from the early 20th century tween war peace’!

It’s turquoise. I talked one of the moving guys into helping me unpack one box, but then he goes on about labour laws and since I’m Fae why don’t I just do it all with my magic, and then laughs at me because he think I’m some kind of skank who married a mortal for money.

Which I did not.

I married a mortal for sport; that’s a completely different thing.

It’d be enough to make a regular girl sad.

It’d be enough to make a regular girl sad. Luckily, for me at least, I am not a regular girl.

Because I’m such a dutiful little wifey, I put three bottles of champagne in the (delightfully retro) fridge to chill so we could have a lovely celebration when he came home at the end of his oh-so-long day to a completely unpacked, tidy little domicile. Do-fucking-mes-tic Bliss.

Yeah, forget that.

Yeah, fuck that noise. You know, now that I think about it, this whole thing might have been a big mistake.

This is really good champagne, though. At least he got that right.

Ha-haha! How do you like me now, Mortal Boy?

You know what? There’s hundreds of fae princes who’d have me! I didn’t need this adventure! I didn’t need this little lark! And I don’t need you!

You and your mayfly lifespan. You and your ‘Oh, let’s play house in a tiny flat even when we could afford a condo on Innsjøen. Oh, won’t it be fun if I go in and set things up on my end and then you set things up at home and cook me a nice dinner’?

You know what I think?

You’re in for a big surprise

I think you’re in for a big surprise when you get home. I’ll leave that last bottle of champagne: you’re going to need it.

Pond Side

Some Days, all I want is to relax and not think about anything heavy. As the Queen in Awenia, days like that are hard to come by, but I managed to schedule one, yesterday in fact.

Summer needs a pool

Summer needs a pool, and Faerie provides. At the far end of the Sacred Grove, there’s now a rock-lined pond, with clear water and the best exposure to the afternoon sun. So that’s where I spent a good part of yesterday. I felt like — well, I didn’t feel like a Queen; I can tell you that.

Kicking Back

When I picked up this beautiful bathing suit from 1313 Mockingbird Lane, the pond hadn’t appeared yet. I thought I was going to have to go find some retro clue in Nu Jyorck or something, put on some 1950s rock and roll, and just glam out on a beach towel. Now, though, I don’t have to do that, and given that much of the multiverse is dealing with a pandemic, it’s probably for the best. I can philosophise about that situation later: what I want to do now is smile smugly and tell you that Awenia Faerie is Almost Ready.

1313 epi to edit - 4 BLOG

Almost Ready

That’s right: in a matter of days, we’ll be reopening Awenia Faerie to tourist traffic. Of course, for tourists from Realms affected by the pandemic, we’ll be requiring health checks prior to authorising travel. Although the Fae are not susceptible to this disease (or any human diseases, really), we want all our tourists to enjoy a safe sojourn in Faery, or at least a sojourn safe from those things that might cause them worry or stress in their home Realms. That’s what a holiday is for, isn’t it?

1313 epi to edit - 7 BLOG

So…. ready—

It’s been stressful getting ready, but now I think I’m ready.

And as steady as I’ve ever been, so let’s say I’m steady as well.

The Way Things Grow

I should be used to it, really.

I should be used to it, really. Used to the way things appear and disappear and remake themselves. It is Faerie, after all.

But that never stops me from just staring in raw wonder at some of the things that crop up.

A new faerie circle

In the Sacred Grove, there’s a new faerie circle with lovely illuminated grass and mushrooms that, I kid you not, smell of strawberries. Our demifae are a wonder. I did find one of them and ask, and the only thing she’d tell me was they got the mushroom spores from Keira Raindale. That’s no surprise: the lady is a mistress of whimsy: of course the mushrooms smell like strawberries.

I picked up some friends

Apparently, bunnies like me today. And this is Tuille, one of our resident unicorns. He’s feeling very spiffy since he told me he had always wanted to be a viking unicorn and so we found him some beautiful tattoos and a horn etching from Devras at Valkyrie Designed. Behind him, you can see where the demifae have made their summer goddess altar; this is our summer guardian tree, and while she may move on when autumn comes, I doubt she will ever stay far away.

Everything illuminated

I just can’t get over the illuminated grass in this faery circle. And beyond it, you can see the rocks surrounding a new little pond (I must take a dip in there later!). And the Cats and Caitsidhe were apparently so happy with our hosting a Summerlands for cats here that they’ve added a temple in the roots of the Shrine Tree. I’m glad they’ve chosen us.

Dancing Elf

Our dancing elf statue ended up here? I expected to find this in the Book Forest; which reminds me, I must get over there and explore sometime soon: there’s no telling what the stories have been getting up to. You can’t stop stories, no matter how hard you try. Stories just are. They persist, and if you won’t tell them, they’ll tell themselves.

The little dryad!

Haha! I didn’t even notice this lovely little dryad the demifae placed here on the summer guardian altar. What thoughtful little creatures they are. And they’ve left a guard, right in her hand. I hope they’re giving you regular breaks, guard of the guardian.

Next Stop?

I stepped across to spend some time with the memory of our gone-forward cats, and shed a few tears for cats I’m missing especially right now. I think it’s safe to say the sacred grove is ready.

I do still want to spend some quiet time in that bathing pool, though. Maybe soon.

Staircase

I had an American friend in uni who told me she grew up thinking that staircases were magical and only wonderful and important people, magical people, would have staircases. I asked her, weren’t there stairs in any of the buildings you visited back in your home country? And she was all, sure, but not like magical staircases. Not like in England.

Senzafine Dress ME 2020 - 1 BLOG

Is this a magical staircase?

I’m not sure if this staircase would make my uni friend’s list of magical staircases. In truth, I’m not even sure she actually had a list. But I like it.

Senzafine Dress ME 2020 - 4 BLOG

Why do I like this staircase?

Why do I like this staircase? Well, I like it because it doesn’t go anywhere. Seriously—it just appeared one day, and there’s absolutely nothing at the top of it. Not a thing.

Senzafine Dress ME 2020 - 3 BLOG

Vexed

Initially, it vexed me. I was vexed. Because I got to the top of this staircase and there wasn’t a thing there. Like, no door. Just a ceiling and some walls and no-where to go but back down….

And I kept trying to figure out if it was some magical thing I wasn’t getting, but of course in the end I had to resign myself to the fact that here was a staircase that didn’t go anywhere, and that’s what things are like in Faerie, and I don’t know why I didn’t just accept it in the first place.

Senzafine Dress ME 2020 - 2 BLOG

Nicer on the way down

In fact, it was much nicer on the way down. Because I could say, ‘I’ve been up that magical staircase’, and lift my eyebrows a little. And then sit back and smile as of course everyone decided that they too must go up this staircase. I wonder if they’ll come to me, all vexed. ‘Why did you send us up that staircase, Your Majesty’? they’ll ask. ‘But I didn’t send you up that staircase’, I will reply. ‘I don’t recall passing any edicts that required anybody to go up that staircase’.

Now, I feel much better. Really, going up and down a useless, magical staircase in a Senzafine gown would make anybody feel better. You should try it, if you’re the sort of person who likes gowns.

Look! A Squirrel!

thought it was time to give a more complete overview of Awenia Faerie and how it’s changing this summer, and of course as your Queen it made sense (to me, anyway) to start in the Royal Book Garden.

Squirrel - 1 BLOG

My New Favourite Place

The Royal Book Garden itself is linked to the Book Forest, of course; these places grow organically out of one another in Faerie. Thoughts Are Things, we say, and so I thought one day that it would be lovely to have a less manic version of the book forest to which I could take visiting Fae royalty—because some of them are just so snooty that if you don’t spread out a formal lunch for them they feel slighted. And honestly, I think they enjoy feeling slighted, some of them. It always makes me laugh when I say ‘honestly’, because the fact is I am unable to be dishonest, being Sidhe.

And just never mind what’s going on over my shoulder: it’s somewhat troubling on that far island. There are noises. I’ll investigate it later. For now, I would love to show you these incredible storybooks that have appeared on stumps and little bookshelves around the edges of the Garden, and we’ll also take a look at some of Kilik Lekvoda’s beautiful statuary, and then—wait! Did you sense that? Of course you didn’t: you’re not here.

Squirrel - 2 BLOG

Is there a Squirrel on my Tea Table?

Is… Is there a squirrel on my Tea Table? Do you ever sometimes get the feeling that there is a squirrel on your tea table? Happens to me all the time. Of course, there never is…

Squirrel - 3 BLOG

There is! There is a Squirrel on my Tea Table!

But this time… There is! There is a Squirrel on my Tea Table! Look, you little ingrate! That’s my tea and more importantly (yes, I can see you!) my honey!

It’s unacceptable. Little woodland animals do not get to just trot in here and have their way with my lovely food and sweets…

And I’m always giving in to them; I always do it, because they’re so cute! Oh, look at those big brown eyes! Who’s a doe-eyed little chonk? You are!

Squirrel - 4 BLOG

I cannot resist those eyes!

Yeah.

So then I sat down and had tea with the squirrel. His name’s Bernard, by the way. And he’s a bachelor. I don’t know why that matters, but he was emphatic about it.

I don’t remember what I was going to say. Where was I going with all this? Nope; totally lost the plot. Oh, well: I’m sure I’ll remember later.

How To Remember The Perfect Storm

This is the story of a rooftop and a memory, a memory I remade because it needed to change, and I will start from the end and then jump right back to the beginning, because I’ve recently learned that not everyone does this.

I am a historical revisionist, I guess. Because here is the memory I remade. It’s my first trip to Røyken since—well, since some things changed a bit in the universe. I guess you could say the universe itself is somewhat of a historical revisionist, but that’s another topic for another time.

First, I’ll show you the finale of the remade memory. The thing about remaking a memory is to change only the parts that give you distress and keep all other details exactly the same, if you can.

London Rain Roof - 4 BLOG

Dancing on a Røyken Roof

Sometimes as I’ve aged, I’ve had a nostalgic longing to revisit the city I grew up in, which you probably know as Røyken, but in my mind is always known by its alternative name, London. You might even meet some people there, should you ever visit, who prefer to call their city ‘London’, but I suspect those folk, or I should say their desire to speak that name, are a dwindling breed.

Anyway.

I went to the Skredder School, which if you know Røyken you may think of as a bit posh. I really went there because my adoptive parents were both employed by Gullsmed, and the school was about halfway between their work and our home. That sounds flippant, but my mum used to swear it was true. They’d only just moved to Røyken when I arrived on the scene, and they knew next to nothing about schools, so they went with the (thankfully accurate) recommendations of their new coworkers. I guess it helped that their coworkers were all university lecturers.

Skredder was made up of a bunch of buildings, all from different times and aesthetics because the school grew and expanded over the years, but my home base building was the arts and humanities school, and I’d call it Brutalist now; when I was a kid we just called it ugly. But it was cheap and functional, I guess, and the building was maybe from the 1960s? I don’t know. And people call a lot of things Brutalist when they’re not actually. I am probably one of those people.

Anyway.

London Rain Roof - 3 BLOG

The Roof

If you knew the way, you could get on to the roof of the Skredder arts and humanities building. And I knew the way.

London Rain Roof - 8 BLOG

Rain

My memories of the Skredder roof are all about quiet times, sitting up there writing, listening to the hum of industrial fans, being alone. I wasn’t always alone; it was just a big roof.

Anyway, it was school holidays on this visit. So I figured, I’ll go up to the roof.

It started pouring at some point. I don’t usually mind the rain, but on this day as it moved toward evening I just wasn’t prepared for it.

London Rain Roof - 9 BLOG

It just figured.

I guess I had expectations. Anyway, it pissed me off. And the roof really was empty, and the rain came down in sheets, and my glamoured umbrella at least was pretty, but it made me remember.

London Rain Roof - 6 BLOG

Isolation

It made me remember that I did not spend all my time on the Skredder roof happily writing and planning and singing and dancing like some manic pixie dream girl.

The fact is, I was a lonely kid. And my efforts to fit in and be like the girls I knew at school took work and energy. There were a lot of tears, I remember. I remember lots of tears from when I was in school, and then suddenly there were tears again. Me, an ageless Sidhe, bawling my eyes out on a rooftop.

London Rain Roof - 10 BLOG

Nothingness

There was this sense that with the cloud cover so thick and the rain so dense and the light so dim and blue, that nothing beyond the roof could possibly exist, nothing. Because school wasn’t in session, there weren’t even any lights through the skylights.

I remember the sky darkening and that smell, ozone, coming. And I was so angry, so full of resentment for this force I could not control in Røyken. Too many variables in a big city, too many warring magical factions: one wrong weather change could start a witch war, and there is nothing so messy as a witch war. Never mind that I am not actually a witch: witches have this idea that they are the only existent magic, and even if I’d done the whole thing with good old OTO precision, the witches, particularly Røyken witches, if I’m honest, would just assume the change came from one of them and fight first, ask questions later.

So years later, when I think of that visit to Skredder, all I had was this sorrow, this self-pity, and this completely tangental rage toward Røyken trad witches. It made me sad and angry, and it threatened to make me forget the good things about the roof.

London Rain Roof - 1 BLOG

So I took this moment.

I have never liked that memory, of me on my old school roof, crying. So I remembered it again. I took this moment. This one, right here. I scrunched up my eyes and tasted the air, reached out a hand, to see if it would really rain—and of course that’s when it did.

One moment, one change.

London Rain Roof - 2 BLOG

Joyful anticipation?

What if, instead of scrunching my eyes up and meeting the rain with anger, I remembered it like this: I smelled ozone. The sky darkened. Ooh, a roof rain storm! I stretched out my hand to feel the first drops. And I looked up into that endless sea of clouds with anticipation and not resentment.

London Rain Roof - 7 BLOG

A Solid Plan

And then, with that one moment changed, Rainy Roof Day Me looks at Today Me and an understanding passes between us. We have changed the beginning, the introduction, and now the rest of the story will write itself, and we will have a happy ending and a dance on the roof of the Skredder arts and humanities building.

And then, you see, it will be OK to go back to Røyken, in no small part because I will have forgiven the witches.

From The Author: Because in Gwyneth’s story people like significant ex Richard can read her blog, I won’t be referring to the Event in which the veil between the ‘natural’ and ‘supernatural’ worlds was blown to pieces, thus creating a new reality in which people have ‘always known’ about the other parallel worlds that exist alongside theirs. She will couch it in vague language, but as a world walker, she is necessarily aware that something has changed, and since it started with her house on White Owl Island being blown up, she feels personally affronted by it, so it comes up a lot. On public social media, everyone is an unreliable narrator, and Gwyneth is no different.

The Longest Short Walk Home

Warning
The blank verse story below might make folks uncomfortable. It tells the story of a woman, different from others in her town, and a brief moment she endures on her walk home from a late night at her pub job. It shines a light on the shame we might feel when we are judged and generalisations are made about us. Even a woman in a beautiful dress can feel singled out and belittled.

Only the torch light paints her path to home
And even then the shadows glow in flickers

A Dream Of Spirits

The fox journey has seemed at times surreal, at times frustrating, and at all times inscrutable. I do not understand why this spirit fox picked me, why he keeps showing up in my dreams, why he so desperately wants to show me this or that.

I thought I was alone

But this time, I thought I was alone. It seemed I woke at the end of a bridge, and there was something abnormally quiet about it, at least at first.

A sense of solitude

I really might have been the only person in the world, for those few minutes.

Little visions

But then little visions began to come to me, little flashes of what else there was to see here.

And so I walked on, looking and discovering as I went. From path to bridge to little farm,  all seemed still and calm and somehow holding its breath as if waiting for something…

And that’s when I met the owl.

The owl was the first living being I’d seen since waking up at the bridge. ‘Well, look at you’, I said. ‘You’ve got your very own perch, nobody around for miles, you’re the king of the castle, aren’t you’?

Have you ever heard an owl laugh? It is disconcerting; I’ll tell you that. ‘I am in fact the god of the village’, he replied with absolutely no irony. ‘But you’ll travel farther than just here today’, he said—like he knew so much. ‘It’s dangerous to go alone. Take this’.

Yes, he really said that. And then I felt a soft weight in the crook of my arm, and there was a much younger little spirit fox, and this one was a beautiful purply-blue colour.

‘Oh’! I said. ‘You got me another fox’!

‘Another fox’? asked the owl. ‘Has another one come down from the forest, then’? He looked, well, as nervous as I could ever imagine an owl looking.

‘No, no; this is a white fox that has been visiting me in dreams’, I explained.

‘Oh, that one’. He nodded, as if he knew so much. ‘Well, perhaps you’ll see him again when you get up there’. He nodded toward a break in the wall. ‘Best get moving’.

And so I did.

Up the long set of steps we went

And so we went out the gate and up a set of natural-looking steps that led up a hill (I don’t think it could be called a mountain) on a winding path.

We came into a forest

We came into a forest guarded by two red foxes. That’s when my familiar fox appeared on my shoulder. ‘Watch those two’, he said.

Mist in the forest

‘I can only watch one of them at at time’, I replied; ‘they’re too far apart’!

He snorted. ‘Oh, you’ve turned white now have you, little one’? he teased. ‘Any day now you’ll be calling me papa’.

The little one in my arms snorted.

What are you telling us?

‘What are you telling us’? I asked. ‘Is that spirit fox for “not bloody likely”‘?

My (ha!) spirit fox laughed at us then. ‘Well, you’ll have to go on and explore without us’, he said. ‘We have some work to do here in the Kitsune Forest’, but you’ll see us again before long’.

It wasn’t as much fun to explore now that I’d had time with the foxes, but I won’t soon forget the beautiful market. It sounded every bit like a live market, except there was no-one there that I could see.

And when I woke up later, in my own bed in Faerie, both foxes were nowhere to be found. I am sure they will find me again; they seem impossible to avoid, after all.

Calling Spring

So much time alone. Even here in Faerie we are touched by the current human pandemic; our tourism has ceased for the foreseeable future, as we are not a wholly magical set of Realms like the Fantasy Faire, and our tourist base is largely in Realms where travel is heavily controlled.

We get depressed, too.

Now, of course, we’re lucky here in my little pocket Realm: if we were a big tourist destination like Awenia, we’d see even more isolation. But, being the stewardess of a tiny Realm has its positives, as well.

I called Spring

It’s not like you can just get on the horn and go, ‘Yo, Spring! Get me some flowers, immediately‘! You have to concentrate. You have to see the flowers in your mind. You have to be in a space where, if magic did occur, flowers could in fact appear in some way or another (like through this window, for example).

Being Delighted

And then of course it’s only polite to be properly delighted when Spring does in fact send you exactly what you were asking for.

And more!

When that happens, of course, there’s only one thing to do:

Snapshot_018 BLOG

Let Spring know you love it

Let Spring know you love it, in no uncertain terms. Make sure it knows. Even if you whisper it completely to yourself, Spring will hear: trust me.

Send It Forward.

Then, send it forward, far and wide, everywhere you can reach. Don’t worry: Spring knows you can’t reach everywhere. But there are plenty of others who will help you pass Spring along. We’re everywhere.

My friend Mystie, also known as Mystical Edenflower, has a little shop in Second Life called MishMash Fusion. She will be the first person to tell you that she is not a super amazing original mesh creator, but the woman is a goddess with style and texture, and when she showed me a photograph of this dress (in another colour), I knew I had to photograph it.

She called the dress Unchained Melody, and I love that song: it’s part of the soundtrack of my childhood. It was released the year before I was born (so now you all know that I am super old). The most famous woman in that year was apparently Julie Andrews, and while this isn’t a perfect Julie Andrews avatar, it gives a nod to her.

Dress: MishMash Fusion, Unchained Melody (You can get it soon at the Garden Of Hope event, which is a Relay For Life event, so a percentage of what you spend there will go to the American Cancer Society.) Garden Of Hope opens on the 29th of May!
