Bellisserian Voice: New Opportunities at the Fifth Anniversary Celebration!

It turns out that having a working partnership with the publisher and editor of the formerly most scandalous Fae gossip sheet in the known universe is not a bad thing at all!

Cherish popped round the other day and asked if I’d like to come and have coffee with her. I hadn’t been paid in a while, so it seemed only natural.

We sat on her terrace, as folks do, and had a nice cup of coffee. She even brought out some digestive biscuits—must be a good week!

“I,” she said, “have a job for you.”

I groaned. “You aren’t still on about that supposed conspiracy to curtail bioluminescence in Fantasseria? I keep telling you, I cannot find any concrete information on that, and I’m half convinced you made it up out of whole cloth.”

Cherish rolled her eyes and flipped my words away (metaphorically of course) with a flick of her fingers. “Whole cloth is the best cloth,” she said. “Besides, exposés like that one take a while to put together. Don’t worry: I’ll get all the facts for you eventually. No; this is about the upcoming Bellisseria Fifth Anniversary festival.”

“OK— so you want me to cover this for FaeWatch.” I don’t know why, but it takes a long time for me to completely understand what Cherish is saying some of the time. Maybe it’s that shrill little mortal voice of hers.

“That’s the plan, plus the event itself is looking for some coverage, so grabbing a press pass and telling them who you represent could actually get us a little more readership, if you play your cards right.”

My cards. Aren’t those cards the publisher’s to play? But whatever; it was a job. “Anything special I need to know?” I asked.

Cherish leaned forward, conspiratorially. “Well— of course I know you’ll concentrate on the right things, but just think! Maybe we could have a spinoff called, I don’t know, BelliWatch or something.”

I groaned audibly. “Have you met many Bellisserians? They’d take the piss out of that name for days, maybe even in perpetuity. Besides, Bellisseria already has like three newspapers or something.”

Cherish sighed. “But we’ll cover it from our special point of view,” she said.

Yeah, I thought. Like fully making up stories about the bioluminescence thieves in Fantasseria. Out loud, I just replied, “Sure, sure. OK. I’ll see what I can do for you.”

And that was that; I finished my coffee, thanked her, and walked home. I’m beginning to think Cherish Gelato is not such an upstanding citizen.

“What do you think, LD?” I asked when I got home. Of course, LD is a static lawn ornament, so he did not have any useful advice. Oh, well. Better glamour myself up for the morning, when it comes.

And it did come.

I decided I’d take a full on Avalonian look for my first walk into the 5th Anniversary event space, even though I wasn’t sure what I was walking into, exactly.

I mean, it’s not like I’m a real journalist or anything. I just know how to write a bit, and Cherish happens to live down the park.

My crippling anxiety aside, I took a deep breath and centred myself before summoning the boat that would take me across the channel to Highland Fling station and then on to the Bellisseria 5th Anniversary Event celebration grounds. Apparently you have to take a water taxi to get there. I like trains better than boats. And the more I thought about it, the less scared I was. It’s a community event, after all—Bellisserians are very nice folk in general, and I would certainly encounter some friends there, so why not just look forward to it with enjoyment?
