An Extra Place at the Table

It is October in Awenia. And so we watch the world change, and sometimes we make the world change, as our magical year turns toward its ending. And yes, we believe that inside all endings there are also beginnings, and that is how we see the world on a wheel. Our Three Realms, Land, Sea, Sky, they all live in this wheel and on this cycle. As we near the turning point of the cycle, we mark where our old year passes into the new. In Awenia, because we are a Realm of inspiration, this marking goes on throughout the month of October.

To remember our departed, recently and ancient, every table gains an extra setting at this time.

An Extra Place

In some traditions, this practice is known as the Dumb Supper, and everything is prepared oppositely with everything usually on the right placed on the left, for example. Here, there is so thin a veil every day between worlds and realms, we do not bother with this ritual aspect.

Instead, we concentrate on beauty

Instead, we concentrate on making the space beautiful, welcoming, inviting, in the hopes that our honoured departed, be they recently gone from us or from many centuries ago, will find our tables to their liking.

For this year’s Sacred Meadow Table, I have found the most beautiful tableware, produced by master craftswoman Nodnol Jameson and her Kraftwork house. These arrived just as I was beginning to Turn Awenia to Autumn. They were part of a larger seasonal decorating package called a Decorate that I have enjoyed receiving for many years. This time of year, the contents are often focused on the more popular aspects of our Autumn holidays, the spooky fun, and the spooky creepy, and while we love those things in Awenia as well (Her Majesty will personally kiss you if you bring her candy corn!), we do take a more meditative view of these days.

Cats and Cups

So, this month, while you’re getting ready for your spooky fun and working on memorising your best ghost story or perfecting the perfect Hallowe’en costume, take a moment, if you can find one, and consider why we honour the dead. Why do we venerate our ancestors? For what reasons do we hold them in our memories and our hearts? How would the repast before us be possible, if we truly existed on our own, in some bubble, and had no ancestors, no giants on whose shoulders we could stand?

A Place at the Table

And, if the spirit moves you, set an extra place at your table, too. And have dinner with your father, your grandmother, your long-lost relative who gave some part of themselves so that you could be you.

Back, and Forward

Now, imagine—in a hundred years’ time, in five hundred years’ time, who will set a place at their table and hope to share a meal with you?

Look Back With Love; Look Forward With Hope

I will be talking to the manager.

I answered them all. All the questions. I was truthful. I was clear. I did not mince words or skip things or dance around subjects. And it seemed pretty straightforward. You apply to be in a fairy tale, and you tell them what kind of fairy tale you want to be in, and you pay the deposit, and then they put you in the fairy tale.

Does this look like a castle to you?

Does this look like a castle to you? No? That’s right! It’s not a castle. I was very very clear about that. I said I wanted to live in a castle. Not once did I use the word cottage. Not once did I use the word hovel.

And yet, here I am.

And yet, here I am. It’s been a week. My notes go unanswered, even though I put them in the post box as indicated. The three women who live here and take care of me insist that I call them my Aunties. They call me “Little Fair One” to my face, and “Little Smart Mouth” when they think I can’t hear them.

At least something about this place is smart, hm?

At least something about this place is smart, hm? I mean, obviously, Sleeping Beauty at least in a couple of versions, lived with three transformed fairies who took care of her until she pricked her finger anyway, but that is not what I signed up for; it’s not what I paid a deposit for, and no-one seems to be responding to my strongly-worded notes. I don’t know how these people expect to keep a fairytale tourism business running if they offer such poor service.

Ooh, golly, let me show you round my humble home!

Ooh, golly, let me show you round my humble home! And I do mean humble. Here is the entry foyer; as you can see, there are no footmen, no servants, not even a mouse to take my cape. There is a hall stand, a stairway, and that’s pretty much it.

The Aunties spend a lot of time here in the kitchen.

The Aunties spend a lot of time here in the kitchen, which means I spend as little time here as possible. Would you believe they tried to get me to peel potatoes my first night? Potatoes? I explained to them that carbs are really bad for me. Auntie One (I have no idea what their names are) said, “Oh, well, I guess we can substitute with carrots.” Wow.

Their lounge is full of kitsch

Their lounge is full of kitsch and mementos from their pasts, maybe? Or maybe they’re just props. Pictures and silhouettes of former residents, Half a tonne of music boxes. I asked about some of them. “Oh, that was one of our favourite Little Fair Ones,” they said, about the blonde cherub on the wall there. “She went on to do great things.” Then One clucked at Three and Two gave them both a dark look and they all three shut up. At least there are books there, and at least they don’t bother me too much. Funny they haven’t even asked me about any balls or anything. I’ve been here a week. Maybe management has already contacted them about the mistake and they’re just waiting for the fix. Yesterday, a spinning wheel appeared by the lounge front window. I think they’re just torturing me now.

My little room might as well be for a servant!

And speaking of torture— my little room might as well be for a servant! It doesn’t even have a proper door. I mean, sure, it’s got some castle décor and there’s a pillow with a crown on it, but other than that, I’m experiencing the top of the wattle-and-daub line, here. And that’s not a compliment. I’m taking a lot of snapshots to make my eventual complaint more colourful when I finally make it back home.

Well, sometimes we just have to take matters into our own hands.

Well, sometimes we just have to take matters into our own hands, don’t we. I’m going upstairs with a pair of scissors, I am. And I’m ripping that crown off the pillow. That’s what I’m going to do.

It should be hours before the Aunties get back from market day.

It should be hours before the Aunties get back from market day. They were gone ’til nearly midnight last time, and they came back with hardly any shopping. The market must be a long way away and it must not have very much, is all I’m saying.

Out in the front garden, there’s a statue of a dragon guardian, and I’m sure he can help me out. Dragons always know what to do.

C’mon, help me out here!

C’mon, help me out here! I paid good money for this, and I know you must have a direct line to whomever’s in charge. Anybody with a big glowing orb is important; at least that’s what my GM always says. You don’t want to be named in my official complaint, do you? Just get me out of here, OK? This is not what I paid for.

* Way back in the long-ago, there was another kind of Enchantment event. These two items are from the Sleeping Beauty round of that event. I was, no pun intended, enchanted to find that I still had a few things from that event in my inventory, and it was fun to use them in photos for this one.

The Door Into Autumn

Door into Autumn BLOG - 2

It’s not what you’d think.

It’s not what you’d think. You’d think, if someone told you there was a door to autumn, that beyond this door there would be sweet smelling coffee drinks. And maple leaves. But the truth is, the journey to autumn, although it is always the same, is always changing. That was paradoxical. I am allowed to be paradoxical.

Door into Autumn BLOG - 4

I came through this door only moments ago.

I came through this door only moments ago. Before I entered, I was wearing a much less colourful dress. And while that might not seem significant to you, it’s not like dresses just naturally come in eight colours that can be changed with the touch of a button. No; for me, it takes a little energy and a little glamour: Faerie Queens are not, despite the hype, all-powerful.

Door into Autumn BLOG - 1

It’s a balancing act, like everything else.

It’s a balancing act, like everything else, I think. Autumn is, I mean. It amuses me to think there’s some way-above-my-pay-grade Seasonal Authority, and somewhere in their office there’s a Forecasting Bureau. And they decide whether it’s going to be (for most people; obviously individual experiences vary) a joyful, or sad, or weird Autumn.

Door into Autumn BLOG - 5

I’ll put my tokens in ‘joyful’ every time.

Now, I’ll put my tokens in ‘joyful’ every time, because I am that kind of a self-centred, sappy, lazy creature whose understanding of the world begins and ends with my own self-interest. There: that was both introspective and factual!

Door into Autumn BLOG - 3

But my darlings, I have seen the future….

But, my darlings: I have seen the future.

Door into Autumn BLOG - 6

And it is weird.

And it? Is weird.

Style Card:
Gown:
Senzafine, Althea, a gorgeous tunic-style gown available at We Love Roleplay until 30 September. Comes in 8 colours. If you get the palette pack, you get a HUD that will change their colours with a button. NO LIE! 😀
Skin: Ritual, Elspeth, Ritual’s newest in-store release. This is in T1, all freckled up, because nobody does freckles better than Ritual. This skin is available in a big selection of shades at the Ritual Main Store.

Body: Maitreya
Head: Genus Project, Baby Face
Hair: Kokolores, Runa. An asymmetrical bob with great textures, available at The Liaison Collaborative until 26 September.
Makeup: Alaskametro, Impressionist. I don’t usually use “special” SL makeup unless it’s at least as good or as interesting as the makeup The Author does in Real Life, and the example here is just one of several beautiful makeup looks in the palette. You can pick it up at Uber until the 22nd of September.
Hand Jewelry: Meva, Celtic Hand Jewelry. Again, I don’t always focus on jewellery and rings and stuff, but this piece, available at  We Love Roleplay until 30 September, was just exceptional, and I suspect Gwyneth will be wearing it a lot this autumn.
Wings: Egosumaii, Fae Wings. Obviously, I have dozens of wings, and these just matched colour and style perfectly for this post. I mean, a Fae Queen has to have lots of wings, right? It’s purely for ceremonial reasons, I assure you. Anyway, you can get these at the Egosumaii Main Store.

Environment:
Photo Box: KraftWork, The Book of Dreams. I’ve used this background before, and you know, it just never gets old. You can pick it up at the KraftWork Main Store, and while you’re there, you should become part of their VIP group, because it’s an awesome place to be.
Shrooms: Half-Deer, Dreamscape Mushrooms. I mean, who doesn’t love Half-Deer? These and other lovely things are available at the Half-Deer Main Store.
Ground Cover: Balderdash, Hearts Lament. Balderdash stuff is always beautiful, and the genius who creates it, Saiyge Lotus, is pretty amazing herself. Pick this and other beautiful things up at the Balderdash Main Store.
Rain, though I’m not sure you can see it, is The Simplest Rain Set, from Dysfunctionality, available at the Dysfunctionality Main Store.

Magic Storytime in the Book Forest

Sometimes we get guests! And by guests, I mean, people (for some definitions of people) who come into the Book Forest to read lots of lovely stories to whoever happens to be there.

Storytime is an important Book Forest tradition that continues on no matter who’s there to read or be read to, to tell or be told to.

storytime blog - 1

The Literary Tent

This evening’s special guest chose The Literary Tent, possibly because it just showed up in the Forest a couple of days ago, and possibly because it’s a mite nippy in the Forest this time of year and she felt it was cosier.

storytime blog - 2

But who was our special guest?

But who was tonight’s special guest? You probably will figure it out if you look at the title of the book she’s talking about with all our Book Forest animals. It’s the one and only Gretel of the fairy tale, all grown up and happy to share her story with the world!

She started by introducing herself and letting the animals ask a few questions.

“But why are you wearing jeans?” asked the chocolate bunny

“Because I can.”

“And how come your hair is blonde?” asked the blue-haired unicorn.

“Because it grew that way.”

“Did you really forgive your mum for all that stuff?” asked the adorable grey kitten.

“After years of therapy, sure.” She sensed the questions were going to get tougher. “But that’s all the Q&A we have time for: I want to tell you my story, and also tell you about this magical book!”

“Ooh, it’s a magical book, just like us!” The baby dragon leaned over to nuzzle the griffin sparrow.

“That’s right!” said Gretel. “This is a magic book, because, while I’m going to tell you my story today, I also want to show you how you can come back here and just touch this book, and it will read you the story and even show you pictures!”

storytime blog - 3

Wow! The actual gingerbread house!

The hedgehog in the hat piped up, “Wow! The actual gingerbread house!”

“That’s right. All the pictures in this book are of my actual story, all gathered from the events as they occurred. Don’t ask: it’s magic,” she said, only a little sternly.

“But how does the magic book work?” asked the tall hare.

“All you have to do is touch it and tell it you want to see my story in pictures and hear someone read it to you,” Gretel explained.

“So I could touch it with my horn?” asked the blue-haired unicorn.

“Sure,” said Gretel.

“How about noses?” asked the fat white squirrel.

“That will work too.”

“Antlers?” asked the gruff-voiced reindeer.

“Yep. It all works!”

Everybody was amazed—so amazed that Gretel used the book as she told her story, adding in little bits and pieces that she only tells when she’s speaking to groups in person.

The best part is, she left a copy of the book right here in the book forest, so when you visit, you can hear all about Gretel and her story too.

Do you want your own magical copy of Hansel and Gretel? You can get it on the Second Life Marketplace!

Paper Worlds

From The Author: Probably one of my favourite things about blogging in Second life, or it might really be my favourite, is what I think of as the circle of inspiration. I find inspiration in the wonderful things I get to build stories around here, and in so doing, I get to call attention to great creators. For example, I’m blogging for a new event called The Floating Market. It opens tomorrow. I also have some wonderful friends who create beautiful, beautiful music. So when Attic sent this Paper Forest Gacha in a blog pack, I couldn’t help but think of a beautiful song by my friend Talis Kimberley: Paper Worlds. I’ve included a link to a YouTube video of Talis performing this song live with some other friends of mine. I hope you’ll listen to the song; the link is at the end of the post.

PW1BLOG - 7

It isn’t just space

It isn’t just
Space though I hope we’ll take our
Place out there like the stories say we
Will where other stars shine it isn’t just
Space and it isn’t just
Time though the future casts bright
Echoes back and the past ensnares me
Still through centuries’ gaze it isn’t just time

Here are paper worlds, to draw me in….

Here are paper worlds to draw me in
I can taste life lived in a different skin
There are paper worlds that have kept me sane
And I read them again and again and again
There are paper worlds I hold so dear
Others still that ache till the wound runs clear
Here are paper worlds to stir my soul
To break my heart and leave me whole
And leave me …..…..whole

PW1BLOG - 1

And leave me …. whole

And leave me …..…..whole

PW1BLOG - 8

And it isn’t just me

And it isn’t just
Me who filled my childhood
Summers and my winter nights with
These I know it isn’t just
Me and isn’t it
Fine how such a tiny
Doorway lets us in like Alice

Squeezed into words – isn’t it fine

PW1BLOG - 3

There are paper worlds where no-one dies,

There are paper worlds where no-one dies,
Where all are mad, where vision lies
Where rivers run where arrows fall
Where planets burn where sirens call
There are paper worlds where the sun turns cold
Where love is banned, where none grow old
Where heroes fail and heroes win
You can taste life lived in a different skin

PW1BLOG - 10

These paper worlds I hold so dear

These paper worlds I hold so dear
Till the wound runs clear
These paper worlds have stirred my soul
To leave me whole, and it isn’t just me

Alone in the woods…

Alone in the woods, I am looking for something. I don’t know what I am looking for, but that’s not unusual.

I hear a noise, not far away, and I turn to see

Another version of me, telling stories to animals.

Another version of me, telling stories to animals. Her/my voice rises and falls, and they are rapt. Dragons flutter round the edges, bunnies cavort; even the squirrels have her/my attention.

So why am I here, when I am also there? And what does she have that I don’t have? The forest grows dark around me, and I fear I will be lost.
