What’s the Best time of the Year for Gowns?

It’s a trick question! Every time of the year is the best time for gowns! I really do not know why we don’t all just traipse around our Second Lives in ballgowns, 24/7. But then, I’m probably one of the “gowniest” photographers/bloggers on the grid, and my idea of fun is to see how many crowns I have that actually match this dress….

It’s possible I have no life.

But really. There are some great gown makers in Second Life, and I’m pleased to show you an absolutely gorgeous fear this dress kind of ballgown, from the overflowing creative cup of Silvan Moon Designs, right now. And I do mean fear this dress as a compliment! This dress repels zombies. This dress will actually make the children of the night shut up. But be careful, because this dress also knows how to correctly pronounce Cthulhu. So roll your sanity check, and then check out this dress!

Fills a whole portal!

The “Love’s Pure Light” Bridal Gown Set, from Silvan Moon Designs fills an entire portal with its voluminous skirt. It fears no evil. It takes no prisoners (although it would be happy to move refugees across formal borders).

The “Love’s Pure Light” Bridal Gown Set from Silvan Moon Designs

The gown features a lovely fitted bodice, shoulders bedecked with roses, and a skirt into which one could successfully hide seventeen extra crowns, at least. Not that I checked or anything. Really, I didn’t: I promise. Nor did I try on seventeen crowns before settling on this one. It was more like twenty. OK, twenty-five, tops. The crown is actually an old favourite from Evie’s Closet.

As an aside, this dress also looks gorgeous (Well, really; when does it not look gorgeous? I’ll help you: the answer is never! This gown never looks less than gorgeous) in front of Rivendale‘s lovely Dreamy Castle, which a little royal birdie told me was on sale for 50% off at Winter’s Hollow…. just sayin’….

Crown Cam!

Here’s a shot that shows the crown a little closer: it and the necklace are both from Evie’s Closet, the Alateriel II crown and collar. And of course there’s a gratuitous shot of Awenia Faerie, featuring the castle all decorated for Christmas and the twinkly fairy path to the ruined tower.

You can get the Love’s Pure Light gown at The Trunk Show, which opens later today, 17 December. Even if a winter wedding is not in store for you, I’m sure there are lots of end-of-year balls that really need to have someone wearing this dress present. You know. Just in case of zombies.

Awenia’s First Winter

It is finally here: December in Awenia Faerie. There is so much more to do, but we are ready for our midwinter gatherings, snow lies thick on the ground, and there are beautiful things to see wherever you look.

As Queen, I get the privilege of showing some of the highlights to you for the first time. And, you know me. I have to have a great gown to add a little sprinkle to the frosty cupcakes, and so…

Silvan Moon Designs’ Selenia of Galacia Gown

This is a new gown from Silvan Moon Designs, Selenia of Galacia. It’s not only festive enough to walk around on an ice rink, but it has a nice, warm fur collar (not that Fae Queens feel the cold, you understand), and delightful pearly baubles strung so as to appear to be floating around it.

The Dark of the Year

The Dark of the Year settles soft upon us now, and even when we have a clear day, there is often a hint of snow on the horizon. Mists rise up, obscuring even those things in the near distance into near-silhouette, and all light is magical. Behind the Realm’s iconic Last Hope statue, the Book Forest glimmers enticingly. and I cannot help but smile at the thought of our first holiday tourists arriving to see these shimmers and twinkles.

The Land itself is a reflection of lights and shadows

The Land itself is a reflection of lights and shadows, and I think we will have to have some sort of festive dance or party, sometime soon, to celebrate Darkness flowing into the Return of Light. And, you know, nobody throws a shindig like the Sidhe.

If you’re curious, you can purchase the Selenia of Galacia Gown from Silvan Moon Designs at the We Love Roleplay holiday faire, which I think opens in just about fourteen hours. I plan to be there, with fur and pearls on!

Let me leave you with just one of the views you may see if you decide to visit Awenia Faerie.

Finally, Awenia Faerie is open to the general public! You can arrive in Faerie itself, or you can start at our official landing point, The Great Awenia Forest. For at least the month of December, the region is open for exploration and photography. When you land at either of the two landing points noted above, please read the rules about rezzing stuff and being respectful and all that, and we’ll give you a few extra landmarks as well just to get your explorations started. Over the past couple of years. Dyisi and I have worked really hard on making bits of Awenia, and I hope you enjoy what we’ve put together. In January, Awenia will close to visitors, and we will re-open sometime in mid-May to take you through the Light Half of the Year and into the Darkness again. Please visit, take your time exploring, and if you’re so inclined, help us out a bit with the tier by dropping some coins into the tip jars scattered round the Realm.

Midwinter Ball?

Well, you have to have one. And I’ve been remiss, because there wasn’t one last year; there was so much going on with intrigue and all the mess over at White Owl.

But, of course there’s planning to be done. And because Nathaniel is busy doing all that bureaucratic bs I abhor, I have taken on the heavy mantle of planning the Winter Ball.

And that means choosing a venue. Now, unlike ordinary balls, we Fae get to just magically erect an impressive building anywhere we like. It makes for fewer lost guests, better entertainment, and many more starry-eyed mortals by the time the night is over. Much better than going someplace and picking a building over which I don’t have total control.

The Looking Glass’ Basilica is my first choice for this year

The Looking Glass’ Basilica is my first choice for this year’s ball. Awenia has to open with a huge party, of course, and I’ve already lined up the impressive DJ Fae to handle the entertainment: now I just have to inspect the building and make sure it’s exactly what we need. I decided to try out one of the likely candidates for this year’s Winter Ball Gown as well, because seeing how the dress looks in the hall is so important, don’t you find?

A Winter Gown

I liked this gown so much I decided to wear it all day. It’s a major contender, I think. It’s from Silvan Moon Designs, which of course means it fits impeccably and the style details cannot be beat: just look at the snowflake motifs on the bodice! The diaphanous drapes only add to the sensation that you may actually be wearing a very well-behaved snowstorm.

A really good gown requires little accessorising

A really good gown, of course, requires little accessorising. I was glad for the simplicity of this circlet and matching necklace, which speak both to the power of the winter stag god and the triumph of the moon. These pieces are from Supernatural, and to be honest, I’ve had them for a while and I’m not sure where I picked them up. They’ve proven to be versatile and suitable for many occasions. I think white gloves are just plain necessary for a gown like this, certainly in the wintertime. For a touch of formality, you can’t ever go wrong getting your hair done by the wonderful people at Truth; this style is called Makena, and they do several different versions of it.

Fearful Symmetry BLOG - 13

The real test

Of course, the real test of a ball gown is how well it moves, and this one seemed to glide across the Basilica’s highly polished floors with ease. Perhaps before I make the final decision, I’ll ask Nathaniel to take a few hours off and come dance with me, just a little, in the main atrium.

I’m so impressed with the interior of this as a potential ballroom. The combination of pillars, stonework, and stained glass is remarkable.

Fearful Symmetry BLOG - 14

Only one question remains

Only one question remains: is it perhaps too big?

How will we ever fill it?

And then— then, I think of all the many families and houses who are connected to us in some way. All we have to do is not plan the ball directly on Midwinter, as that’s when all the regional and family balls will be held. Maybe we’ll do it a wee bit later, after mortal Christmas but before the calendrical New Year.

I’ll just send out Save the Date cards. Bran can handle all the arrangements. And we? We will fill this hall.

The Fae Duchess of Doncaster

Her Ladyship, Beatrice Canderiel, the Fae Duchess of Doncaster, spent a day in Dublin, where she was photographed with her prize dogs at Trinity College.

Fae Duchess of Doncaster, with Dogs

After her formal photographic meeting, she invited the photographer to come with her to one of Dublin’s many beautiful parks, where she intended to show an eager class of primary school students how to find fairies in the wild.

One can whistle

One can whistle, she explained as she put her lips together and blew, eliciting gasps of outrage from the primary school teachers (and possibly an assistant Headmaster or two). However, she said in a swift correction, there are those who believe that whistling is unseemly for ladies; she herself, she asserted, had never been bound by the sanctimoniousness of society.

Sometimes, she said, a flick of the finger is enough. She proved this by attracting an amethyst fairy to come and sit on her hand, while its little friend hovered, watching with an animalistic curiosity.

Eventually, she enticed a third fairy

Eventually, she enticed a third fairy. This one was robed in rose, and seemed to be more skittish than the rest; it flew and flitted all about her head as the children chortled. By this time, many of the children had found their own fairies to observe; Lady Beatrice was quick to remind them that snaring small supernatural beings is strictly forbidden by the Fae Concealed Commission, which oversees such oversights.

Fond Farewell

In the end, she bid the students, teachers, assistant headmasters, reporters, photographers, hangers-on, and several gazeboed geezers who just happened to be standing (and we use that term loosely) on the corner as she retreated back to Trinity College to collect her pups and be on her way to the Fair Ferry, where she drifted back to Doncaster, no doubt to be greeted by gaiety wherever she went.

Small World, Part 2

Another day, another breakfast. I get the feeling the weather may be about to turn; there’s a generous bowl of porridge this morning, a pot of coffee in addition to the usual orange juice. I wish once again that I could have coffee every day.

Halfway through, it starts to rain. Great. This means I will spend at least part of the day inside. So. Not. Thrilled.

Down the stairs I come

And yet, down the stairs I come, because there’s even less to do up there. I’ll try reading for a while, and I might or might not just give up since I’ve read them all (well, almost all of them: there is this huge and bloody dry one called The Silmarillion that I’ve given up on more times than I’ve read most of the others).

This is my nap face.

Maybe I’ll spend the morning napping on the couch on trying not to think about things too much. I don’t really like napping. This is my nap face, though. It’s a good nap face.

But there’s that damn beeping noise again. Beep-beep; beep-beep; beep-beep. Am I crazy, or is it more frequent today? I’m probably crazy. Or perhaps it’s the sound of an approaching Prince. Let’s go with that.

No luck.

Aaand.. that-was an abysmal failure. Super. The windows are still rain-streaked, and I’m sure this break in the rain is only temporary.

I hear laughter in the distance. Perhaps the gods or goddesses of fate are laughing at my stupidity, thinking I could get a nap on a rainy day in my lonely little world.

The music-box shelf

I wander over to the music-box Shelf. Sure, I’ve heard them all before, multiple times. But somehow, even though I know in my heart there must be more music then I can imagine Out There…the familiar tunes are comforting.

Small World 2 BLOG - 3

What does this stuff do?

What does this stuff do? I have no freaking idea. But I’m sure if I explored the much more dry books that reside in the cabinet below these shelves, I could figure something out. Of course, there’s no point in learning to make poisons if I’ve nobody to poison. Maybe this is all stock knowledge for the future. I could come away from this place with a stockpile of poisons, in case my Prince doesn’t turn out to be my perfect match. Then I’d be a widow with a really big dowry. This shelf is a relatively new addition to the tower, so I haven’t really explored it yet— but some of those bottles contain things that smell right nasty.

Small World 2 BLOG - 1

Too much tea!

When I make my way back over to the bookshelf, possibly to read Gossamer Axe one more time, I see that someone or something has placed yet another tea service on the table. What’s with all this tea? No sandwiches, no biscuits, just tea. Obviously it’s not lunch time yet, but do they really expect me to drink all this tea? Three pots full? Perhaps it is some kind of tea test. What sort of test could you take with tea?

Beep-beep; beep-beep; beep-beep. Murmuring voices. A different series of beeps. Are they (whoever they are) trying to drive me round the bend?

I know: I shall ask the Wishing Fairy to take all these noises away.

Small World 2 BLOG - 4

My closest companion.

Sure, she’s a silver cast statue— but she’s the closest thing to a full-size companion I have in this place of weirdness. “Hey,” I say, “Wishing Fairy.” (I don’t know if that’s her real name but I’ve called her that since I’ve been here and she’s never objected) “Can you make those noises go away? I’m really tired of them.” And suddenly I have a coughing fit. I don’t know why. Great. My handkerchiefs are upstairs.

I go up to retrieve the handkerchief, and I feel dizzy on the stairs: that’s unusual. On the way back down, handkerchief in hand, I have to use the handrail. Still a bit dizzy, and the fall would be pretty bad, I assume.

At the bottom of the stairs, I take a few deep breaths and look out the window. The rain appears to have stopped, so I can get out of this stuffy tower, at least for a little while.

The reading bench

So, back to my favourite reading bench I go, copy of Gossamer Axe in hand. It’s one of my favourites, even though I don’t know the first thing about the kinds of music they talk about in the book. It’s my favourite first line ever, though.

“Chick with a harp.”

Awenia’s Peculiar Magic

It’s hard to believe I live in a castle now. Well, I live in a castle for the moment, at least until this internship is over and I have to go on to … to whatever’s next.

Witchi BLOG - 1

Waking up in a fairytale

Right now, it still feels as if I’m waking up in a fairytale every morning. I’m sure that will change—even if, right now, I can’t imagine ever getting used to waking up in a freaking castle.

Anyway, that’s not even the point of this. I’ve been trying to perfect my image, my persona, for when Awenia opens to the public. The Queen is off on some recruiting mission; she’s trying to get more Fae to be part of Awenia’s staff. She wants to get them all moved in and settled into their roles before the whole place is teeming with tourists, as she says. I have a feeling it will take a while before we are at the “teeming with tourists” stage, but what do I know?

And again, that’s not even the point of this. Because I’ve been trying to perfect my image, I’ve been spending a lot of time wandering around Awenia. And I can tell you right now, it’s weird up in here. Stuff changes every day. And I don’t mean like, someone comes along and plants flowers.

I mean, like, a whole  building disappears overnight. Or sometimes just for a few hours. Small forests come and go here.

Witchi BLOG - 2

Beyond the Queen’s roses

And today, beyond the Queen’s roses, a circle of stones appeared. Now, I am one hundred percent, bona fide pureblood Lios Alfar, but I’ve never seen a place where stuff changes like this. It’s like the whole place is made of some kind of magical liquid or something, and sometimes stuff just oozes into other …. no, that sounds pretty foul; forget I said it like that. I’ll work on a new metaphor.

Now, my home Realm of Cymrien has a lot of stone, but it’s mostly used for farm fences, shoring up shorelines (yeah, I know. We can’t always have perfect word usage), and the occasional large building. But wood is sacred to the gods, and Cymrien temples are made of wood. While I’m sure visitors from elsewhere would be amazed by some of our live wood temples, I’ve always been fascinated by monuments made of dead stone. Our templebuilders, despite some dissent in the ranks, won’t even use petrified wood for temples, because this wood has died. Many of us do wear jewellery made of petrified wood, however. But I’m getting off topic. Again.

The point is, a freaking circle of stones appeared just outside the Queen’s castle. And I’d never seen one before, not up close anyway. I mean, there are some big stones up in the Fae Forest outside of town, but they’re mostly just single stones, or like three stones piled up together to make some kind of giant, peculiar table.

Witchi BLOG - 3

I might have run toward the stones

I might have run toward the stones. OK, I did run. But who knows how long stuff will stay, and it was important to me to get close enough to at least take a selfie for Ma and Da back home.

Witchi BLOG - 4

Stone Circle Selfie!

I used my drone to take this stone circle selfie. I love that you can see the Book Forest and the Awenia Treehouse in the background. I’ve not been in the treehouse myself yet, but the Queen tells me it will be a centre of diplomatic activity in Faerie, and also a place for her and her husband, Nathaniel, to get away from it all. She also says the views are great. I am looking forward to seeing it one of these days.

So, the stones. Well, they are beautiful. And the roses growing here are life-blood red, different from the roses so nearby in the Queen’s garden. Now, I’m not the most observant girl, me; but I am sure I felt some kind of presence inside the circle. It had a calming and peaceful effect, which is the same feeling I get inside of a live wood temple, which if you don’t know is a circle of trees planted just so. Their roots grow together, they are carefully tended so that their branches intertwine, and eventually they grow into a roof so well woven that it keeps rain out. Some of them are thousands of years old.

I will have to ask Her Majesty how such spirit can go into a material I always considered devoid of spirit.

Meanwhile, I think I’ll just spend a few hours lying on my back in this circle, smelling the grass, watching the changing shadows.

The Ancient and Honourable Company of Fae Pirates?

So, after the trip to Helgen Francis, I thought I was done with this spate of weird dreams. It’s not as if nothing interesting has happened since then, either. The Book Forest has rearranged itself. I went off adventuring to Eclectica for the first time in ages. And, possibly coincidentally, there have been whisperings through the grapevine that The Gypsy Davey has been seen in Awenia. I thought I was safe. I thought I had finally gotten over the strangely vivid dreams that’d been plaguing me for months beforehand.

I was wrong.

AHCFP BLOG - 1

The Ancient and Honourable Company of Fae Pirates?

“The Ancient and Honourable Company of Fae Pirates? You have got to be kidding me.” The disembodied voice that had welcomed me to this Company (a company of one, it seemed, but more on that later) faded off into the distance. Then the only sounds were wind, the unending sounds of the sea rising and falling, and the chittering of a small purple dragonet who didn’t seem to want to leave me alone and kept hovering there near my shoulder.

“I don’t even like ‘Talk Like a Pirate Day'”, I muttered. “First person who says ‘Arr, Matey’ to me gets shanked. Or at least glamoured into a very small fish.”

This wasn’t a problem because apparently there were no other people. Perhaps the Company were all off doing some raiding. But as we seemed to be, well, becalmed (not terribly far from land, but still), my mind kept going to more sinister places.

AHCFP BLOG - 4

What if the crew had all been murdered?

What if the crew had all been murdered? What if I was sent here to help them, but I arrived too late? And of course, the same fate might be awaiting me.

The little dragonet chittered.

AHCFP BLOG - 6

What are you trying to tell me?

What are you trying to tell me, little fellow? I wondered. I may have even asked it out loud: it wasn’t like anybody would be making fun of me for inappropriately chatting up a dragonet.

AHCFP BLOG - 3

The Opposite Direction

I walked the length of the disturbingly empty ship to the stern, the bit that was closest to—well, some people might call it land: it appeared to be a building on an otherwise barren rock rising out of the sea. Still nothing. Even though I had no idea what the dragonet was trying to tell me, it chittered excitedly while looking in a completely different direction than I was.

AHCFP BLOG - 7

Where’d they go, Henry?

“Where’d they go, Henry?” I asked the dragonet. “You don’t mind if I call you Henry, do you? I’m Gwyneth.”

The dragonet made a chittery-scolding sound. Maybe he was trying to give me the location of the rest of the crew, assuming they existed. Maybe he just had bad associations with the name Henry.

“Of course, I can’t argue with this outfit, Henry,” I rambled on. “If I were actually going to be a pirate, even a dream pirate, I would totally wear something like this.” The dress with all its frills was a lot of fun, but I couldn’t decide whether my favourite piece was the leather thigh-high leggings or the strapped boots. It is, of course, a good thing that Fae Queens don’t actually walk on the earth; we hover a few centimetres above it as a rule. I haven’t put weight on my feet in years, and I think stiletto heels might just do me in. They are absolutely gorgeous, though. For a fleeting moment, I wondered why I didn’t have any weapons. “Aren’t pirates usually armed to the teeth, Henry? Maybe not Fae Pirates, hm?”

Once again, Henry chittered excitedly. I could only assume he was agreeing with my assessment of the pirate outfit.

AHCFP BLOG - 2

Glad

“I’m glad you agree with me, Henry,” I said. “We’d have had Words if you didn’t.”

Henry made a sound suspiciously like a burp.

And then, in perfect English, he said: “Your Majesty. The crew are marooned on that island with all the trees over there.” He used a wing to point. “You were the only expert we could get on short notice.”

Expert? I blanched.

“My name isn’t Henry; it’s Beauregard. You’ll need to pilot the ship to the island.”

I squinted. “Looks close enough to swim from to me.”

“Looks are deceiving, Your Majesty,” Henry—I mean, Beauregard—continued. “These are serpent-infested waters.”

AHCFP BLOG - 5

I have no idea how to pilot a ship!

“What? I’ve no idea how to pilot a ship!” I exclaimed.

“Well, the Navigational Owl has flown off, said something about mating season,” said Beauregard.

“Navigational….owl?” I asked.

“Sure; all AHCFP ships have one,” replied the dragonet.

“AHCFP,” I said.

“The Ancient and Honourable Company of Fae Pirates?” Beauregard sighed. “You recall I welcomed you to our numbers when you arrived on board.”

“That was you?” I asked.

“Of course,” he said. “I have different tones of voice for different purposes. I’m not two dimensional, you know.”

“I never said you were!” I envisioned that this argument could go on like this for some time, so I just sighed and approached the large steering wheel.

After that, it all gets muddled. I think we were entering some kind of vortex where we were Sure To Drown when I finally woke up.
