Decorating, With Ponies!

The Empty Room

People say empty rooms are some great, undiscovered country. They are meant to be full of possibility. For me, they’re more an obstacle course to navigate.

When Queen Gwyneth told me that as her intern I’d be assigned a room in the castle, I didn’t expect to have my own tower. Well, half a tower. It’s really one big room and a little entrance hallway that also serves as the corridor from the main house to the secondary tower.

“I was going to give you both the tower rooms,” Her Majesty explained, “but then I realised there’s no set of stairs going directly from this room into the room above, and I thought you’d go batty running from one room to another via all the other staircases in the castle. I figured you’d end up spending most of your time in one room anyway, so this will be your private space. Mine and Nathaniel’s rooms are up in the main tower, and Wren and Drysi will be on the first floor, so you’ll be the only person with living space on the ground floor. You’ll almost have a castle to yourself!”

Not really, but I wasn’t going to argue. “It’s a great space,” I agreed.

“Wonderful. Your things have arrived from Cymriel, so you can have the day to put it together. But I expect you back at work with Nathaniel tomorrow on those brochures.” She winked as if she weren’t really serious about all the work she expects, but I know differently.

The bed comes first

Of course, the bed has to come first: it’s just a matter of bulk. I’m so glad my parents sent over my old bed—with a new duvet! I’ve slept in this bed for years, and it would feel sort of funny to sleep anywhere else. I guess I’m not as grown up as I want to be, because the sense of comfort I felt when the footmen brought that bed through was palpable.

Next, the vanity

Her Majesty insisted I have a vanity in my room, “because you’ll be going to all sorts of events and I need you to look your best. Thank you, by the way, for working on a new look for me: I need all my top level assistants to look exotic and interesting for the tourists.”

OK, fine. I’m not much for being super well put together, but I understand her logic.

After that, my favourite settee

Then, I had the footmen place my favourite settee, again lovingly recovered by some of my mum’s helpers. The book on the settee is my journal, and yes, it’s locked, and no, you can’t read it.

My desk!

My desk doesn’t look right without my computer and my lamp and my favourite cup and these pictures. All of these things are important to me. The unicorn lamp was a gift from one of my brothers. My favourite cup I found just a few weeks ago at a faire. I love cats, and unicorns, and of course My Little Pony (who doesn’t?). In fact, to use the current young people’s parlance, I would say that Fluttershy is my spirit animal. When Queen Gwyneth asked me to make myself over in order to look more interesting for tourists, I decided to become the fae incarnation of Fluttershy. So it’ll be like I’m cosplaying 24/7!

Decorated desk

Now we come to the part of decorating that I actually like: the putting-in of all my little things that makes my space mine. My unicorn chair has to go close to the desk so I can reach stuff, but far enough away from the computer that I won’t be tempted to spend all my time on Discord with my friends. Pegasus Pony and Bunny (I’m so creative with names!) have to go on the shelf, because they help me with assignments. I’m not making this up. And the Fairytale sign was another gift from the same brother who gave me the unicorn lamp. Eponas really gets me.

Hearth

After that, I worked on the hearth space. I know you can see a bit of the vanity on the left, but we’ll get to that: I forgot to take photographs as I was going along, so these were mostly taken after the room was finished.

I’d never had my own hearth to decorate before: our family’s home in Cymru is quite small in comparison to Queen Gwyneth’s amazing castle. She gave me a little design lesson the castle when I first visited, and she promises to take me to visit the designer, Rivendale, one day soon. She says everything in that shop is amazing.

This old mirror and the butterfly hangings come from my “hippy” period, which occurred more or less when it happened; I was in my 50s at the time, and the counterculture movement in the USA really spoke to me. The bunnycorn I’ve had since I was very small and I don’t remember where it came from. And of course, Fluttershy is there to guard me whilst I’m sleeping and make sure no monsters come through the fireplace. She’s good like that.

Fairy Collection

I was really surprised that mum included this little set of fairies in a box labeled “special decor”. She collects decor, and this is one of her favourite sets of figurines. I’ve always loved them, so she sent them along. Given the rate at which she collects stuff like this, I’m sure she already has a replacement set for the curio shelf back home.

Vanity stickers, and Mean Cats!

Yes, I have a large wall sticker depicting the My Little Pony cast. I love how Fluttershy is looking over them all, as if she is the grand caretaker. As for the cat balloon, I have a bunch of them, but I couldn’t find the others, so I put the Mean Cat pictures up on the window. Mean Cat is another one of my special animals: he (in his many incarnations) helps me when I desperately need to stab someone but would rather not get in trouble for oathbreaking, so I pretend that he is doing it instead of me. I mean, I pretend that whoever is bothering me gets stabbed by him, not that I somehow become him in a weird Son of Sam kind of way. Because that would be creepy.

After break, bed and balloon!

I took a break to see the hairstylist, Robin. She gave me this gorgeous cut with a braid extension (you can’t see it in this picture; it’s behind me), and then I found the kitty dress and my witch hat and my favourite pink boots in one of the boxes. In that box for some reason, was this amazing unicorn balloon, which of course I put up right away: a girl can’t have too many bedroom guardians; am I right? And—about that wall sticker. When I was in my 70s, my mother got this idea in her head that everybody needed to have a personal statement, preferably displayed prominently in their living space. So… this is my personal statement. It may be a bit juvenile, but that’s how I feel about life. If everyone isn’t a pony, they should be.

By the time I got to this stage, I was tired, but there was still one completely unfinished and undecorated wall. “OK”, I said to the helper fairies, “We need some shelves up in here, pronto.”

They were good to oblige me and made sure the shelves looked like trees. I approve of this.

TWP's room AfP BLOG - 8

My favourite part!

Then it was time for my favourite part: my collections. I suppose the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree here: I have so many little things I’ve collected over the years that they took up, well, several boxes, and there’s not enough room to put all of them up here, so I just put up my favourites.

TWP's room AfP BLOG - 3

Real fairies!

Now, some people have been downright critical of me for this collection: these are real fairies from Cymriel, and I caught them when I was very small and put them into jars and gave them great living environments. I am very careful to feed and water them frequently. They will be such a wonderful reminder of my homeland: the native plants in the terrariums just make everything so much nicer. I know they are happy because they’re always smiling, so don’t look at me like that.

TWP's room AfP BLOG - 1

Meowls!

love meowls. I used to train them and show them back in Cymriel, and these are ten of my absolute favourites: the rest have been left in the company of one of our gardeners who loves them almost as much as I do. They all have names, and there is a story behind each one, but I won’t bore you with details. They do get up to some mischief, but once they’ve been here long enough that they understand this is home base, I’ll open a window and let them fly in and out as they please. Until then, my handmaid is going to have her hands full (see what I did there?)!

When we got to this stage, there were still about six boxes of stuff left over. For right now, they’re being stored in the corridor: Queen Gwyneth says she will drop them into a pocket dimension for me in a few days when the moon’s right for it.

Am I finished? No clue! I’ll probably want to change things up in a week or so: that’s how my squirrel brain works. But for now, I’m pretty happy.

The Ancient and Honourable Company of Fae Pirates?

So, after the trip to Helgen Francis, I thought I was done with this spate of weird dreams. It’s not as if nothing interesting has happened since then, either. The Book Forest has rearranged itself. I went off adventuring to Eclectica for the first time in ages. And, possibly coincidentally, there have been whisperings through the grapevine that The Gypsy Davey has been seen in Awenia. I thought I was safe. I thought I had finally gotten over the strangely vivid dreams that’d been plaguing me for months beforehand.

I was wrong.

AHCFP BLOG - 1

The Ancient and Honourable Company of Fae Pirates?

“The Ancient and Honourable Company of Fae Pirates? You have got to be kidding me.” The disembodied voice that had welcomed me to this Company (a company of one, it seemed, but more on that later) faded off into the distance. Then the only sounds were wind, the unending sounds of the sea rising and falling, and the chittering of a small purple dragonet who didn’t seem to want to leave me alone and kept hovering there near my shoulder.

“I don’t even like ‘Talk Like a Pirate Day'”, I muttered. “First person who says ‘Arr, Matey’ to me gets shanked. Or at least glamoured into a very small fish.”

This wasn’t a problem because apparently there were no other people. Perhaps the Company were all off doing some raiding. But as we seemed to be, well, becalmed (not terribly far from land, but still), my mind kept going to more sinister places.

What if the crew had all been murdered?

What if the crew had all been murdered? What if I was sent here to help them, but I arrived too late? And of course, the same fate might be awaiting me.

The little dragonet chittered.

AHCFP BLOG - 6

What are you trying to tell me?

What are you trying to tell me, little fellow? I wondered. I may have even asked it out loud: it wasn’t like anybody would be making fun of me for inappropriately chatting up a dragonet.

AHCFP BLOG - 3

The Opposite Direction

I walked the length of the disturbingly empty ship to the stern, the bit that was closest to—well, some people might call it land: it appeared to be a building on an otherwise barren rock rising out of the sea. Still nothing. Even though I had no idea what the dragonet was trying to tell me, it chittered excitedly while looking in a completely different direction than I was.

AHCFP BLOG - 7

Where’d they go, Henry?

“Where’d they go, Henry?” I asked the dragonet. “You don’t mind if I call you Henry, do you? I’m Gwyneth.”

The dragonet made a chittery-scolding sound. Maybe he was trying to give me the location of the rest of the crew, assuming they existed. Maybe he just had bad associations with the name Henry.

“Of course, I can’t argue with this outfit, Henry,” I rambled on. “If I were actually going to be a pirate, even a dream pirate, I would totally wear something like this.” The dress with all its frills was a lot of fun, but I couldn’t decide whether my favourite piece was the leather thigh-high leggings or the strapped boots. It is, of course, a good thing that Fae Queens don’t actually walk on the earth; we hover a few centimetres above it as a rule. I haven’t put weight on my feet in years, and I think stiletto heels might just do me in. They are absolutely gorgeous, though. For a fleeting moment, I wondered why I didn’t have any weapons. “Aren’t pirates usually armed to the teeth, Henry? Maybe not Fae Pirates, hm?”

Once again, Henry chittered excitedly. I could only assume he was agreeing with my assessment of the pirate outfit.

AHCFP BLOG - 2

Glad

“I’m glad you agree with me, Henry,” I said. “We’d have had Words if you didn’t.”

Henry made a sound suspiciously like a burp.

And then, in perfect English, he said: “Your Majesty. The crew are marooned on that island with all the trees over there.” He used a wing to point. “You were the only expert we could get on short notice.”

Expert? I blanched.

“My name isn’t Henry; it’s Beauregard. You’ll need to pilot the ship to the island.”

I squinted. “Looks close enough to swim from to me.”

“Looks are deceiving, Your Majesty,” Henry—I mean, Beauregard—continued. “These are serpent-infested waters.”

AHCFP BLOG - 5

I have no idea how to pilot a ship!

“What? I’ve no idea how to pilot a ship!” I exclaimed.

“Well, the Navigational Owl has flown off, said something about mating season,” said Beauregard.

“Navigational….owl?” I asked.

“Sure; all AHCFP ships have one,” replied the dragonet.

“AHCFP,” I said.

“The Ancient and Honourable Company of Fae Pirates?” Beauregard sighed. “You recall I welcomed you to our numbers when you arrived on board.”

“That was you?” I asked.

“Of course,” he said. “I have different tones of voice for different purposes. I’m not two dimensional, you know.”

“I never said you were!” I envisioned that this argument could go on like this for some time, so I just sighed and approached the large steering wheel.

After that, it all gets muddled. I think we were entering some kind of vortex where we were Sure To Drown when I finally woke up.

I want adventure in the great wide somewhere….

I admit it. Even I love when Disney gets it right. And, I guess I’m the right age for this….

I love Beauty and the Beast.

I love Beauty and the Beast. I very nearly wrote my thesis on it, but got talked out of it because there were so many novels and stories on the same topic coming out at the time.

I know this, of course. I know it because, duh, I read them all! I don’t care if the writer has subject verb agreement problems and an ongoing love affair with the apostrophe, if it’s a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, I’ll give it a shot.

So when Bran popped in one morning this week to tell me that one of the lovely people from Silvan Moon Designs had dropped by with a dress for me to try on approval, for the recently opened Enchantment Faire, let’s just say…. there was squeeing. In fact, I jumped up and down with glee.

“Your Majesty?” He was bemused, but then that’s Bran’s normal state. He’s somewhat like my beloved Nathaniel in this. “I don’t understand.” He stared at the dress. “You do not wear a lot of yellow,” he said.

“But it’s Belle’s gown!” I said.

He stared at me.

“Oh, for goodness’ sake!” I fired up the Apple TV and downloaded a copy of the animated Beauty and the Beast. I downloaded the live action version for good measure. And made Bran sit down and watch them both, plus the Lindsey Stirling video where she does like half the score on solo fiddle.

It is not often that you see a grown Sidhe cry. I admit I was smug.

After four hours of straight-up Beauty and the Beast, I was incapable of waiting any longer. “I have to put on this dress right now.” I said.

Bran didn’t protest, except to note that we had no ball planned. I retorted that I didn’t care, and I made him and Clutie follow me out with an iPhone and a gimbal, because I wanted pictures. Clutie just rolled her eyes, bless her. Then again, she’s seen the films.

Of course, we couldn’t escape the pixies.

.

Of course, it being always summer here in Faerie, we couldn’t escape the pixies. They are kin to us, but they’re also pests, and they love nothing more than the iridescent meadow that is my grove garden. So of course we had to deal with them: they certainly weren’t going to leave us alone.

Enchantment B&TB 1 BLOG - 2

Look at those little photo-bombers!

I tried to strike some romantic and dramatic poses, but look at those little photo bombers!

“Try turning the other way, Your Majesty,” Clutie suggested. She’d enlisted the help of a couple other demifae, because Bran was impossible. He just kept looking at me and sniffling.

“Gwneth, you look so….so….” he’d say, and then start sniffling.

One of the pixies was particularly problematic: he(?) kept getting right up in my face and trying to land on my nose or something. To be honest, the other ones weren’t much of a problem, as pixies go: I think they just wanted to be near us while we worked, and of course they spend more time in the garden than I do. This one little guy was really getting on my nerves, though.

Enchantment B&TB 1 BLOG - 6

At one point, I admit I lost my temper.

At one point, I admit I lost my temper. “Look, you little so-and-so,” I said. OK, I might have been slightly more profane than that. “If you don’t keep getting in my face, I’m going to call the redcaps. You hear me?” He was unfazed. He might have known we don’t really see a lot of redcaps in this little island of Faerie.

“Best just let him have what he wants, Your Majesty,” one of Clutie’s helpers said.

I scowled. “And what exactly is that?”

“He just wants to be in the pictures,” Clutie said. “They like attention, and because we’re not in a …technological wasteland, they pick up on the fact that you’ll probably post these photographs on social media so other people can enjoy them.”

I raised a brow: Clutie was using my own description of the Wylds against me.

Enchantment B&TB 1 BLOG - 5

“If that’s what it takes,” I reasoned. “Go ahead, little guy: grab your moment of fame.”

“If that’s what it takes,” I reasoned. “Go ahead, little guy: grab your moment of fame.” I told him to smile, but I’m not sure pixies know how to smile, really. Or maybe they are always smiling: it’s hard to tell. Mostly they just buzz around little big fae bees and try to land on your nose, but when organised they can get pretty destructive. I remember my Gran blaming them for everything from spoiled milk in the fridge to that time one of her cats came back from the Great Welsh Outdoors inexplicably covered with gooseberry jam.

Enchantment B&TB 1 BLOG - 3

After that, we just decided that as long as they weren’t causing trouble, we’d pretend they were part of the plan all along.

After that, we just decided that as long as they weren’t causing trouble, we’d pretend they were part of the plan all along. This seemed to please them, and I admit they put themselves into mostly pleasing configurations for the rest of the time Clutie and the three other demifae it took to handle the camera were taking pictures.

“Your Majesty, we should all go to the Enchantment Faire tomorrow,” Clutie prodded. “Who knows what else they’ve got there besides this gown? We might find some beautiful things for the castle. I’ve always wanted a talking candlestick.”

“Really?” I was convinced about going to Enchantment, but not about the candlestick. “Always?”

“Always,” she persisted.

Enchantment B&TB 1 BLOG - 4

“I suppose we could take a day for a Faire based around Beauty and the Beast,” I said.

“I suppose we could take a day for a Faire based around Beauty and the Beast, I said. It didn’t take much convincing. “But I am not filling the castle with dancing cutlery, and no way are we bringing home a harpsichord.”

Clutie giggled, and we fell into a nice rhythm of singing songs from the musical as we shot more photos with our pixie hangers-on.

Enchantment B&TB 1 BLOG - 8

Here’s my favourite one.

This one is my favourite, though after we spend tomorrow at the Faire who knows what lovely things we’ll have to do more creative play in the Bower. I could even get used to a tribe of dancing pixies wanting to be in most of the photographs.

If those little pests try to cover me with gooseberry jam though, all bets are off.

Fog and the Garden

Some mornings are just full of possibility. You rise, you dress (And what a dress! Those miracle workers at Silvan Moon Designs have done it again!), you meet an owl along the substantial walk from the castle to the Garden, and you consider.

“Do you think I should move the Garden closer to the castle?” I mused. “It seems an awfully long walk to come here every morning to pay my respects, and Court days will feel interminable.”

“I think that’s a foolish idea, Your Majesty.” Oh, great. That talking cat was back in the Garden. Where was Dyisi when I needed her? The owl was no help (they never are), and I’m pretty sure the cat just wanted a piece of the dress (but who wouldn’t?) There were two bunny rabbits and a faunicorn wandering around with me as well. I”m pretty sure the dogs were just planning on sleeping til the cat came down from its perch (which was of course never going to happen).

I sighed. “Why’s that, Your Cheshireness?” I tried to sound distantly pleasant.

“Because this way you have to look at everything—well, most everything—at least once a day, sometimes twice,” it reasoned. “And you wouldn’t want to miss anything, would you?”

“No, I suppose not,” I said with a frown.

“Smart lady,” said the cat, but just then his scruffier ginger relative finally jumped up to get a piece of that dress. I’m lucky it comes in an assortment of colours.

Late Journey

Coming home so late, you’d think I would be more worried about stalkers and drunkards than I would be about the decision I’m currently making. And despite the relative wittiness of London tube adverts, I really do have more important things on my mind.

Escalator, or steps? Hm… The thing is, if I lost this costume, I’d have to reimburse the club. And the club, conveniently, had nowhere to store it that seemed safe. And I, not-so-conveniently, didn’t exactly carry peacock-costume-sized garment bags with me when I left home for rehearsal this afternoon.

short stories 1 & 2 - 5-1

I’m so tired. All the dancing, fifteen girls just like me in identical costumes, struggling to make sure our feathers don’t touch. So much easier to take the moving steps. But the tail feathers and the train…. it was hard enough knowing I couldn’t sit down on the Tube. But now, two long flights of stairs, and then more stairs to my second floor flat, seems almost more than I can bear.

But I’m young, and I know I can bear it. I will bear it. I do bear it.

With a last look at the train-eating escalator, I turn to walk slowly down the stairs and into the dark.

The Awakening of Silence

No light except the Lantern Tree, and far above, the moon. I am here again, helping the organic growth of Awenia along, suggesting a house, a tree, a path, a fountain.

There was a time when I’d have said, “This is too much for one person.” I’d have been glad of Faermorn, of Saone. Now, I welcome this stillness, the silent waiting that is January, secure in the knowledge of Imbolg, so soon now, and the promise of spring in the womb of the world.

Oh, great mother, guide my hands; guide my heart. Help me see what the Land wants to be.

I used to wonder, are you there? I used to wonder about a lot of things.

Now, I stare in wonder at the moon, the dark sky sparked with flickers from the Lantern Tree, and I watch as fragrant blue flowers spring from my fingers.

There are few times in our little or long lives when we are not waiting for something. Now, I sink into the silence. I think of my Land, Awenia, and how lucky I am to have this influence I do, this ability to shape it.

A long winter’s night. An incandescent moon. Silence is the womb of the world.

Sixteenth Night?

15th-night-blog-1

I know there’s something I’ve forgotten to do.

I know there’s something I’ve forgotten to do. The days go by so fast in this season, as if we’re hurrying Winter out the door. Which I guess, in a way, is what we’re doing, what with all the bell-ringing, sun-waking, clock-starting traditions.

15th-night-1

Oh, yeah!

And of course: that’s what it is. My human mother always, without fail, took “Christmas” decorations down on Twelfth Night, the sixth of January. And here we are, four days late, and I still have a Yule Tree and all these beautiful cards tacked up over the hearth. Right. Needless to say, those traditions don’t matter as much to me now as they did when I was a kid in school, but it would do the reception room good to have a bit of a clear-out, and it’ll help potential visitors to think I’m on top of things (ha!).

Trouble is, Clutie and Danae have buggered off somewhere for the day, and Bran is in a meeting, and Kern, well. Gods know where he’s got to, so I’m all alone in the Atrium this evening.

15th-night-2

But I am mighty!

But I am mighty! Just because, as Queen, I let other beings do lovely things for me because they are my devoted subjects does not mean I cannot do them for myself when duty calls. And so…

15th-night-3

Ah! Just like that.

Ah! Just like that. I’m lucky Fae magic doesn’t have a lot of reagents and spell components, unless it’s something super-important: if everything required equipment, I’d never get anything done. But here we have no cards on the hearth and no book tree.

15th-night-5

Now, I just have to figure out what to put in this space.

Now, I just have to figure out what to put in this space. Not a clock. Not a posh lamp. Oh! I have just the thing!

15th-night-7

There. Table, decor, candles, whoosh!

There! Table, décor, candles, whoosh! Ah, I’m not half bad, for a lazy old Queen, am I?

15th-night-8

And yes, let’s update the chandelier to this one.

And yes; let’s update the chandelier to this one. Many twinkling lights, fewer little birdies.

15th-night-9

And now, I’d say my work here is done….

And now, I’d say my work here is done….

15th-night-10

Until Imbolg, that is.

Until Imbolg, that is. The advent of Spring will require a major redecoration on my part. I might even change houses. Move everything two feet in one direction or another: won’t that please Nathaniel! Or maybe… maybe I’ll just colour everything pink.

Putting it all together

Gwyneth:

Today, I began working on my throne room for White Owl. I know: I’ll probably never get to use it, but it’s a good exercise in decorating, and I was bored.

Below is a photo of my new throne — the demifae are enjoying it, as you can see. I’ve also acquired two new kittens—not CaitSidhe, but honest-to-Goddess kittens! The one on my lap is called Skein, and the black one is Urðr. Of course, this means I’ll have to get two more kittens, since I can’t overlook the other principal Norns.

The throne itself is grown from a special spell provided by the Master Wizards at Hextraordinary. I found them at that most excellent shopping faire, We , and they delivered it for free! Of course, tree thrones are a bit hard and somewhat scratchy, and the Royal Bum cannot deal with that for long periods of time, so I added a bunch of throw pillows I picked up from a gypsy at a gacha Faire some years ago.

Of course, I had to call Nathaniel for his approval (he always approves, does my Beloved Consort), so I summoned a will o’ the wisp to get him there quickly. The will o’ the wisps seem to like me much better now; I can communicate with them easily. Then, I got sentimental and summoned Drysi as well—she’s the only one of my children who reliably comes when called—and she surprised me by showing up in a very fetching dress! Of course, she’ll be back to jeans and t-shirts as soon as she’s out of my presence, not that I mind her dressing up to please her Mother.

I thanked the will o’ the wisp when it returned, of course. And what a lovely feeling of oneness I had with it! I must investigate the Unseelie connection to wisps more carefully at some point.

I have more work to do here, of course, but what a joy it was to write this from my office, in another of my realms, and not have to appease the Luddite Goddess by hopping off to another Realm to access the internet!

Now, of course I have to decorate both the Residence and this official Receiving Area—I think we’ll call it The Atrium—for Yule. Which will keep me busy at least for a couple of hours. I do have the perfect tree in mind for Nathaniel. I hope he loves it.
