Daily Commute

That air of difference, the sense of it, never really leaves you. It works its way out to the surface in ways you won’t even see ’til one day you’re discussing it all with your hypothetical future therapist/healer/priest/take your pick. Sometimes you can still save the memory, if that happens. You can gloss over the prickly bits, change a detail, tell the story that suits you. And of course in dreams the strangest things make sense anyway: you could be having a perfectly ordinary conversation with, say, your long lost cousin who happens for no discernible reason to be a pair of scissors.

Obviously I’m on the Tube with a bunch of commuters, two anime girls, and a rogue.

Obviously, I’m on the Tube with a bunch of commuters, two anime girls, and a rogue. Because that’s just the way things are. All the usual rules of rush hour commuting apply: in the priority seat there’s a white guy in a business suit, aggressively reading a newspaper in case someone disabled gets on. The pregnant woman across from him is more likely to give up her seat. Women sit with their knees crossed together, taking up as little space as possible; men need to air out the crotch and provide standing passengers with obstacles to make their daily trek less boring.

Transport BLOG - 2

“That man is staring at us”

“That man is staring at us,” says Anime Girl With Black Hair. “It makes me uncomfortable.

I can feel the rogue and I roll our eyes in concert. “They always stare, sister,” says the rogue.

Anime Girl fans herself with her fingers.

“You’d best get used to it, sister,” the rogue continues. “Especially when you go around being all different.”

There is a collective intake of breath. All the signs say London enforces diversity. All of them say that. But newspaper man is ruffling his tabloid in a way designed to call attention to itself and not the fact that he can’t take his eyes off any of us, and super tall guy pointedly looks away, as does repressed white lady in black tank dress. Pregnant lady is the only one who’s really not paying us any mind: she’s asleep. Lady in pink looks like she’s going to pretend she must get off at the next stop, even though it’s probably nowhere near home.

Transport BLOG - 3

It’s not going to rub off, you know!

And maybe it’s the heat; maybe it’s some kind of post-experience editing, but I can’t take it any more.

I flick my hair behind my shoulder, giving newspaper man’s defensive shield a thump with my nail in the process. “It’s not going to rub off, you know,” I say, in a voice pitched to carry. Nobody is going to wake up with demon horns or pointy ears or an unfortunate proclivity to change into an adorable kitten who also kicks ass on some kind of otherworld battlefield tomorrow just because they had the misfortune to end up on the Central Line with more than the usual complement of weirdos.”

People are pointedly not looking at me. I’m definitely making an impression.

The rogue half-smiles; I wouldn’t be able to tell if it weren’t the way all rogues smile in fantasy novels. Anime Girl in blue turns around and blows a raspberry at tall guy, then prances toward the train exit. The other Anime Girl brings her delicate fingertips to her perfect, cherry lips. “Oh! You are so brave!” she exclaims, then blushes furiously, apparently because she spoke.

I pull a paperback out of my back pocket. Now that I’ve said my piece, I feel like I can get back into this fascinating bit of chick lit I’m reading.

Back when I was in postgraduate school, I used to be good at making connections. In some ways, I still am. The dream of that girl in the jungle, though—the was and wasn’t me one—that one threw me. And then the next dream came and I got an inkling.

But really, subconscious: I already bought into the many worlds hypotheses. I did. You don’t have to keep hammering me over the head.

Anime Girl and the rogue get off at the next stop. Anime girl hides her face as they exit; the rogue turns back to me to indicate that they are absolutely not together, then hands me a rolly and a business card with her name and mobile number written on the back.

Score.

The Beautiful Age

TLG-TSA BLOG - 24

I decorated the Parlour in the Tree House.

I decorated the Parlour in the tree house. I found some beautiful salon furnishings from The Looking Glass at another one of those faraway shopping faires. This one is called The Secret Affair, and I regularly do a multi-Realm hop to get there whenever I hear that it’s on. And of course I found a beautiful new gown from those geniuses at Silvan Moon Designs. It comes in many beautiful colours, but I thought given the salon décor, I should go with red! I got a new hairstyle from Queue Marlowe over at Analog Dog Hair as well, and I love it so much: It is so bohemian and freeing. I also went to a couple of antique markets and found some beautiful photos of courtesans, actresses, and ladies of the night, mostly from the Belle Epoque, the Beautiful Age. They decorate the walls of the parlour.

All the furniture, the candles, the chandelier, the bar, the privacy screen, it’s all from The Looking Glass. What a great job Sharni Azalee did on this beautiful décor set. I love this room now! And of course because I loved the room so much, I had to invite a friend over.

After Myst left to go home, I settled down on one of the settees and fell asleep. And I had a dream….

TLG-TSA BLOG - 10

Once upon a time, there was a captive faery.

Once upon a time, there was a captive Faery. In her own land, she had been the daughter of a King. But there was a club in Old Nu Jyorck in that time catered to rich mortal men who had, well… they had a lust and love for the Fae.

One of their members was a powerful magician, trained by famous hermeticists from Italy. He devised a spell that would subdue even wild Fae energy and keep it contained, making the Faery an indentured servant to the magician’s will. And so they kept them there, and used them for the entertainments of their various guests.

TLG-TSA BLOG - 12

Sometimes, the captive faery’s countenance was so sad.

Sometimes, the captive faery’s countenance was so sad. Her wings felt clipped. Sad songs were made more sad by the little glamour she could use to enhance her performances.

You may ask, why did the faeries work when they were essentially slaves to the magician’s will? Well, I can only tell you the story of this one faery. She cried and begged to be let free, but the magician would only tell her that if she served him there for seven years, he would release her. And so she did what she was told, and suffered along with the rest of the faeries, none of whom would talk to her about their agreements with the magician, whatever they were.

TLG-TSA BLOG - 11

Like all faeries, she had a voice that could rival the mythical human angels.

Like all faeries, she had a voice that could rival the mythical human angels. On nights when she was singing, the club was full of wealthy men, all of whom listened, rapt, as she sang.

Night after night, she fended off the advances of the mortal men, knowing there were other faeries at the club who welcomed that sort of work.  And year after year, she watched those faeries come and go, She knew that if she went to the magician and asked him, he might change her contract. But she just couldn’t imagine herself in that position, so she continued to sing.

What happened to her? I do not know. The story handed down to me didn’t say much else. I like to believe she was eventually released, that she went back to her life in Faerie tougher and sadder, and that she kept her family safe from threats ever after.

TSA-TLG LAST FAERIE SHOT BLOG - 1

I do know that she was famous, in her way.

I do know that she was famous, in her way. There is a series of postcards (postcards were very popular in this time) that feature her. Some of the other faeries are featured as well, but none so often as this one.

Her name was Glorian.

TLG-TSA BLOG - 21

When I wake up, I am in the same red dress in which I fell asleep.

When I wake up, I am in the same red dress in which I fell asleep. I feel somehow that I have been shown a little piece of unknown Fae history, something that I need to investigate. I wonder if Sharni got her inspiration from that club, or maybe I just superimposed it on to my dream.

TLG-TSA BLOG - 23

I looked back on to my dream, thinking of Glorian.

I looked back on to my dream, thinking of Glorian. How can I learn more of her story? What about the Fae underclass in Old Nu Jyorck? Perhaps I should visit there again, maybe find where the club was. But I don’t even know its name. My dream didn’t tell me that. Maybe I will ask Dyisi to help me with a vision quest.

TLG-TSA BLOG - 20

Yes, I think I will ask Dyisi about that, the next time I see her.

Yes, I think I will ask Dyisi about that, the next time I see her. How to tell that story. How to experience what Glorian experienced, the dark side of The Beautiful Age. How to bring it to life somehow. And how to find out if there are other Realms where Faeries are treated this way. I consider, for a moment, how different my life is from hers. My privilege. My power. My influence. What can I do for those less fortunate than myself?

And all the trouble surrounding White Owl at this time. The influx of refugees. The worry that there is a HS operative in our midst. The boat on fire. And tonight, the vandalism around Camlann and the word “Bloodsucker” written on the wall. We are entering a time of struggle and strife, my Islanders and me. But we will get through it. We will. I will find a way to help, to lift my people up and bring them further in to the light.

I can’t wait to see Myst again.

I can’t wait to see Myst again. What a beautiful soul she is.

Beginning a Book Forest

New Blog Headers - 9

Gwyneth:

I’m building a book forest. Yes, that’s right: a book forest. I got inspired by this gacha at The Guardians, the Storybook Gacha by BananaN. One of the rares is a Book Door! And I was thinking, what would you find if you walked through a Book Door? I’d come across this great set from Una, the Book Road, after I played an Una gacha at a past Fantasy Gacha Carnival, and I’ve been  meaning to use it and blog it every since, but life and my kitchen (don’t even ask!) and sickness got in the way, so it’s been on a shelf in my inventory for months now. I also have this great Book Tree from HarshLands that I’ve used in other places before and photographed on a couple of occasions.

build-teaser-blog-1

Building a Book Forest

Building a book forest, as it turns out, takes some time. I designated a portion of the sim platform to put it on and then began laying out paths. Now, I love to shop (tell us something we don’t know, Gwen!), and so when I got to check out some pre-release items that’ll be at The Crossroads, which opens today, 3 January, I discovered the magical work of Keira RaindaleRaindale has an absolutely gorgeous gacha coming out at The CrossroadsMaplemoor. It includes, among other gorgeous things which I’ll show you as I continue to build and photograph the Book Forest, the gorgeous lamp and wishing well you can see in this photograph.

So, what do you need, really, to build a Book Forest?

build-teaser-blog-3

You need a head full of stories.

You need a head full of stories, first of all. You must love, really love, story. I as a writer, blogger, songwriter, student, and investigator of all things mystical, love nothing better than a good story, and Gwyneth the character reflects this. Like me, her background is in literature and books; unlike me, her concentration is much more on poetry and high literature than mine is, though I have studied those bits and pieces and have read widely. Behind Gwyneth you can see both the Raindale Wishing Well and the HarshLands BookTree. Gwyneth’s skin is part of a stunning new set from The Plastik. Vae really hit this one out of the park, and this skin, Taryn, in colourway Creme, is available at The Plastik Main StoreThe hair is Carrie, new at the Analog Dog Main Store.

build-teaser-blog-2

You need a good lamppost.

You need a good lamppost. Possibly several of them. Because there is never a place in the forest where you’ll feel alone if you have something to guide your steps along the Book Road. All of the bits of the Book Road, by the way, are from Una, as are the large books that ring the forest. The trees surrounding the books are the Mystical Birches from The Little Branch. I’ll include a style card below the post, but Gwyneth is wearing a stunning new gown from JunbugLittle Bird. You can pick up the gown at this month’s Fameshed event; this is the Ruby Silk, but it comes, as you’d expect from Junbug, in a fabulous array of colours. I fell in love with this crown at the recently-closed Winter Solstice in the Mystic Realms event; it’s by Muse, the Rose Brooch Crown. This one wasn’t available at the event; I hunted it down at the Muse Main Store.

So, let’s see. You need a head full of stories. You need a good lamppost.

And, oh, yes.

build-teaser-blog-1-1

You need to not be afraid of the dark.

You need to not be afraid of the dark.

There’s more to come: I’m in love with my book forest, and I will show you all of it, once it’s done.

Morning After

New Blog Headers - 9

Gwyneth:

So, yeah. I was talking about Clutie in my last post, and about how she just annoys me to pieces these days.

As it happens, the morning after my little excursion into the Wylds, I was just sitting on the couch, playing with one of those winged cats I like so much—I don’t know why; they just fascinate me. I was thinking about what I’d do in the Bower for the Winter Solstice, and whether or not I would need to get some demifae in to do a bit of heavy lifting (it always amuses me that I get creatures no longer than the length of my hand to do my heavy lifting), when I felt a familiar buzzing in my head.

2016-winter-gowns-1

See? I really was just minding my own business.

2016-winter-gowns-2

And the next thing I knew, I was arguing with Clutie.

And the next thing I knew, I was arguing with Clutie.

‘No’, I said. ‘I have no interest in trying on winter gowns today. As you can see, I’m very comfortable on this large sofa with this fascinating cat, and I intend to keep on doing this until noon at the very earliest.’

‘But Your Majesty’, Clutie reminded me, ‘I am still your handmaiden, no matter’ (and here she sniffed, perhaps judgmentally) ‘what kind of journey your soul is taking in to night at this moment. And being your handmaiden means that I must prepare you for events to come. And whether you like it or not, it is December, and that means Year Turn parties and Winter Solstice gatherings, and halls filled with light and music’. She sniffed again. ‘I will not have my Queen in a hall full of light and music wearing…’ she wrinkled her nose. ‘What exactly are you wearing, Your Majesty?’

‘Pink footie pyjamas’, I answered, with as much grace and dignity as a grown woman could have, saying the words “pink footie pyjamas”, while actually wearing pink footie pyjamas. Granted, that’s not a lot of grace and dignity.

Danae coughed to hide her laughter; it didn’t work completely, because Clutie turned and gave her the most potent eat shit look I think I’ve seen since that time I suggested to Maric that he dress up as Santa Claus for all the children of the village. Serious lead balloon, that was.

2016-winter-gowns-3

Not three minutes later, I was fuming as Clutie, Danae, and their cohort (whose name I didn’t catch) fitted me in to what was, granted, a gorgeous dress.

Not three minutes later, I was fuming as Clutie, Danae, and their cohort (whose name I didn’t catch) fitted me in to what was, granted, a gorgeous dress.

Clutie, who was ignoring my crankiness completely, flitted back and sighed with dramatic happiness. ‘Oh! I knew you would look marvellous in this one: I had it sent in specially for you. It’s made by Junbug.’

2016-winter-gowns-4

I was still bored when they posed me in front of a rose curtain and started messing with my hair again.

I was still bored when they posed me in front of a rose curtain and started messing with my hair again.

2016-winter-gowns-5

Honestly, I felt like a mannequin with the gift of speech when Clutie finally told me to smile and had her cohort (Sorcha! That’s her name!) snap a photo of me with that Polaroid camera I bought her in Nu Jyorck.

Honestly, I felt like a mannequin with the gift of speech when Clutie finally told me to smile and had her cohort (Sorcha! That’s her name!) snap a photo of me with that polaroid camera I bought her in Nu Jyorck.

‘You look like a goddess, Your Majesty’, she said.

I made a noncommittal noise, although in fact, I did like the dress. The shoes had little butterflies for heels, and I liked those too.

2016-winter-gowns-14

‘Don’t you think this one’s too formal?’ I asked Clutie after they’d all stopped pinning me in to it.

‘Don’t you think this one’s too formal?’ I asked Clutie after they’d all stopped pinning me in to it.

‘Can you ever really be too formal?’ was Clutie’s response. ‘Besides, you love this designer. It’s Silvan Moon Designs. You have this dress already in a sort of ice white colour, but I thought you might appreciate wearing blue and gold again, you know’.

I sighed. ‘Maybe in the summer’, I said, ‘we’ll go back to the Summer Court colours then.’

Clutie pouted. ‘You’d never wear this gown in summer’, she asserted.

2016-winter-gowns-15

‘This is true’, I replied. ‘Fine; I’ll think about it’.

‘This is true’, I replied. ‘Fine; I’ll think about it’.

Then she had Sorcha photograph me again, and we went on to the next dress.

2016-winter-gowns-11

At least this one was red, though it seems she has a thing for trains this year.

At least this one was red, though it seems she has a thing for trains this year.

‘This one’s also from Junbug‘, Clutie informed me as she did something with the crown she insisted on fitting on me “just to see how it looks”. Never mind that I’ve worn this crown dozens of times before and it always looks good: it’s one of Evangeline Miles’ designs, so it’s practically perfect in every way.

2016-winter-gowns-12

‘I do rather like the fit of this one’, I finally admitted.

‘I do rather like the fit of this one’, I finally admitted.

Danae and Sorcha made my nails and lips the same colour as the dress, and of course they glamoured the shoes to match as well. Proper little artists, they are.

‘How many more?’ I murmured wearily to Clutie.

‘Just one more’, she promised. ‘And I saved the best one for last, of course’.

‘Why do we play this game, if you always know the one I’m going to pick as my favourite before I do?’

‘Because it amuses me to know you well, Your Majesty’, she replied. I just about swatted her, but, you know. My nails were still wet.

‘Better colour those black’, she instructed to Danae and Sorcha. Sorcha blinked once, twice, and I’d swear steam came out of her ears.

2016-winter-gowns-blog-1

‘Oh!’ I twirled! I giggled. ‘This is gorgeous, and you don’t even have to tell me who designed it.’

‘Oh!’ I twirled! I giggled! ‘This is gorgeous, and you don’t even have to tell me who designed it. I can tell by the colour alone. Why didn’t you tell me there was an Evangeline Miles design to try on? I never would have snapped at you, not even a little bit.’

Clutie sniffed again.

I rolled my eyes. ‘Are you coming down with a cold, Clutie dear, or are you just so fucking superior you can’t hold it in?’

Clutie huffed. ‘Your Majesty! I never! Your attitude is unbecoming of a Queen sometimes.’

2016-winter-gowns-blog-2

At that, I laughed out loud.

At that, I laughed out loud. ‘Well, at least some things never change,’ I said. I spread my arms out. ‘Now, this dress makes me want to dance. Is there a Solstice Ball this year?’

Clutie clapped her hands. ‘Of course! Nothing could keep us from celebrating the Return of Light, My Queen.’

‘Good’, I replied. ‘This is for that, then. And wherever did you find this gorgeous jewellery?’

‘Oh, now, this is from Vae at The Plastik. She sent it over on approval, with compliments. Shall I send her some faerie gold?’ Clutie’s little helpers tittered at this.

‘No; I shall send her some real gold’, I replied. ‘No reason to make her grumpy. Besides, I think she may be a demon, and I’d rather not piss her off. Hard to tell, really, with some people. And I’ll visit Evie myself to tell her how gorgeous this dress is. And the crown of candles! You’ve outdone yourself, Clutie.’

Clutie puffed with pride. ‘Actually, Danae found this while we were touring round that faire you like to go to, the one about Roleplay. It’s from Paper Moon.’

‘Well, it’s perfect’, I declared. ‘Makes me feel creative. You know, I think we should put a carpet of grass in this atrium, give the tree something to feel under her feet, and us as well. What do you think of that?’

2016-winter-gowns-blog-3

‘A marvellous idea, Your Majesty’, Clutie replied.

‘A marvellous idea, Your Majesty’, Clutie replied. ‘Sorcha, do take another photo, would you?’

Sorcha grumbled that she never got to be in any of the photographs. ‘Oh, do stop moaning’, Danae said, and she levitated the camera to photograph us all together as I struck another dancing pose. ‘There, now’.

‘I could have thought of that’,  Sorcha said, sullen.

‘But you didn’t’, Danae said.

Just then there was a crash from somewhere behind me, and musical cursing.

‘What the fuck?’ I turned, but Clutie obscured the arched doorway with a wall of mist.

‘Sorry, Your Majesty; they’re not ready for you yet’, she said.

‘Who is this “they”?’ I peered into the room, squinting, then raised my hand to clear the mist.

‘Oh, please don’t, My Queen’, Clutie said. ‘Kern’s so excited about this, and I don’t want to ruin his fun. Let’s just say there’s a surprise waiting for you when we’re done here’.

I raised a brow. ‘Oh, fine’, I said, ‘but it had better be good’.

A Fortnight in Farthingdale

New Blog Headers - 11

The Amazing Catwoman:

My sojourn in the gorgeous forest that I may make a home in was once again interrupted by another phone call from my fixer. His name, or the name he gives me anyway, is Jeremy.

Perfect job for me, a two week guard gig at a Mabon festival in the large town of Farthingdale, in some Realm on the mediaeval side of things. No idea about the accommodation, simple portal outside of town, meet with the Chief of Guards, get your assignment, settle in, and watch for brigands, keep the townspeople from getting too crazy during the big Mabon festival they hold there on the day of the Autumnal Equinox, the 21st of September. Stick around a few days after it’s done to take care of stragglers. No problem; I like mediaeval gigs, as long as I’m not forced to drink crap lager and engage in arm wrestling matches with local ruffians who can’t seem to stomach the idea of a woman in armour that doesn’t make her look like she’s about to go subdue monsters with her baps.

Of course I took the gig.

Of course I took the gig. Portal landed me there sometime in the late morning, but it was nearly noon by the time the Guard Chief had me all checked out. It’s surprising, really, how much bureaucracy there is in backwater mediaeval Realms: it’s almost like they’re so bored they have to create paperwork in order to give their lives some meaning.

Guard cabins, I was told, were outside the city gates, natch, beyond the big statue of the lady harper.

Guard cabins, I was told, were outside the city gates, natch, beyond the big statue of the lady harper. So off I went. My hovel was the first one on the right. Apparently that means I’m the first of the hired help to arrive this Mabon season. I suppose I should thank Jeremy for giving me the downlow on the job early: otherwise I might be stuck in a tent in the woods. Not that I mind tent camping, mind you, but while I was ready to be in a tent for a fortnight, I do prefer someplace with a cot. Of course, the cabins looked pretty ramshackle, though the roofs were well-thatched.

Ah, Hovel, Sweet Hovel, at least for the next couple of weeks.

Ah, Hovel, Sweet Hovel, at least for the next couple of weeks. There were only three or four more identical-looking cabins spaced evenly on the road out of town; that is, before the road dead-ended into thick forest. There are always thick forests surrounding villages like this: otherwise highwaymen would never make their cut and the local economy would flounder.

I paused briefly before entering Hovel, Sweet Hovel.

I paused briefly before entering Hovel, Sweet Hovel. I might have said a brief prayer to Her Whom I worship, just to beg briefly for running water and decent tea-making facilities. It’s not like I can ask for more, gig like this.

I have to say, I was stunned when I walked in.

I have to say, I was stunned when I walked in. These little places usually have a weird sense of style, and this one was no different—but it was bigger than it looked on the outside, and I don’t think it was magic: I think it might have just been good engineering and the fact that a single large room looks bigger than a bunch of smaller ones tacked together by a long corridor and a series of narrow doorways. The English could learn a bit about open plan homes by just looking at places like these. Not that they would.

My new temporary home sported running water and decent washing facilities!

My new temporary home sported running water and decent washing facilities! And the bed, while narrow and absolutely meant for one person (no hanky panky for you guards at our revels, missy!), looked comfortable. I dumped my pack between the end of the bed and the washbasin: I’d unpack later into the cabinets in what looked to be a decently equipped washroom cabinet….even if it did have a picture of two pelicans just staring at me. Not quite as weird as The Morrigan sort of staring over my bed with her Bad Raven Self, but you learn to shut things out when you have to stay in as many weird places as I do.

And speaking of weird…. let me tell you about the kitchen.

And speaking of weird…. let me tell you about the kitchen. So, I’m used to these out-of-the-way Realms being full of what I’d think of as anachronisms, but never before have I seen what amounted to a modern flat kitchen just sort of slapped into a stone hut with a thatched roof. Running water, glassware and crockery for four, a hob with a usable kettle, and, Oh, Thank You Goddess, decent tea! Once again, it was definitely made for one: there’s only a stool and a tiny table for eating, but fuck it; I don’t like people much anyway, particularly when I’ve already been told I have to masquerade as a lios alfar for the next fourteen days. No glamour-dropping here, though I may change up my skin just to give myself a little giggle.

That said, aside from the two ends, the cabin was strangely bare.

That said, aside from the two ends, the cabin was strangely bare. I wonder if they repurpose it for different things throughout the year: there were some scuff marks on the floor that suggested at least one large piece of furniture had been recently removed. Again, there was no couch, just a single armchair with a huge stack of books beside it. I guess I’m definitely being told what to do with my down time, eh?

hut-shot-bauhaus-movement-28_001

Nope, I do not look a thing like Her Morriganness.

Nope; I do not look a thing like Her Morriganness. And once I’d had a chance to investigate, I realised the privacy screen between the bed and the rest of the cabin was, well. Not all that private.

Still, it could be worse. I could be in a tent in the woods….

Still, it could be worse. I could be in a tent in the woods, sharing a kettle with a brace of trolls from Goddess knows where and digging latrines a ladylike distance away from aforementioned brace of trolls.

A Dream of White Owl

Gwyneth Blog Header

Gwyneth:

You know how sometimes you have this dream that just seems completely disjointed when you try to remember it later, but at the time, it all seems connected, like nothing could ever be out of place?

I guess most dreams are like that.

What’s odd for me is the image of the white owl that keeps fluttering through these dreams. I’ve never had a particular affinity for owls. I mean, they’re lovely, and I enjoy watching them, but they are creatures of air and I am a creature of water, inasmuch as I can be a creature of anything except pure magic.

It began in a Winter Garden

It began in a winter garden. I found myself dancing in front of a crescent moon. Not that that’s unusual or anything: I remember thinking at the time that it was probably a symbolic dream and this was all allegorical. Yeah: I even edit my own dreams. I’m an intrusive and unreliable narrator. It’s like the cast of a weird paranormal fantasy novel up in here.

Hairology 05.2016 BLOG - 11

And of course the scene changed, like they do.

And of course the scene changed, like they do. I was descending this weird staircase, which obviously led nowhere, but it made perfect sense at the time. Then I noticed this white owl around my neck, which only clocked because I keep noticing white owls turning up in my dreams everywhere.

Hairology 05.2016 BLOG - 12

Then, another crescent, and a sense of profound disorientation.

Then, another crescent, and a sense of profound disorientation. Where was I, anyway? Why was everything covered with snow? It’s summer. Obviously, not in Australia. But that was “real” world geography, something I shouldn’t even be measuring things by any more. So, yeah. Some kind of dream world and me all underdressed as I often am in dreams, but at least feeling comfortable. I’m sure I was wearing sandals, though I don’t think I ever looked at my feet.

Hairology 05.2016 BLOG - 1

And speaking of disorientation….

And speaking of disorientation….

The scene changed again, and I was on some kind of pier, watching a ferry disappear into some kind of mountainous distance. Why was I even watching a ferry? Is that how I got tot this place?

Frankly, it was even weirder than my usual dreams.

Frankly, it was even weirder than my usual dreams. There was nobody around; the whole place seemed deserted.

I made my way up a set of steps to a boardwalk.

I made my way up a set of steps to a boardwalk. In the distance, there was this gorgeous house, and I promised I’d made my way there. On the boardwalk, it looked like there should have been a market in place, but again, there was no one to be seen. Stuff was just lying around as if all the inhabitants had just disappeared.

So strange.

Hairology 05.2016 BLOG - 4

I walked further up into the town.

I walked further up in to the town and flicked my hair back from my— yeah, everything had changed again. The clothes notwithstanding, I felt completely out of place in this odd, deserted town. Where were all the people?

Hairology 05.2016 BLOG - 5

I made my way to sort of an observation area that led to a smaller boardwalk.

I made my way to sort of an observation area that led to a smaller boardwalk. I couldn’t keep my eyes off the house on the beach. It seemed so familiar, as if I should know who lived there, only again, there was no movement except for the waves against the rocks. I could hear birdsong, but I saw no birds.

I let myself look out over the ocean for a few minutes. It really was beautiful.

But then I got this strong feeling it was time to move on. More to explore, I thought; more to see.

But then I got this strong feeling it was time to move on. More to explore, I thought; more to see. Again, the world seemed to spin.

And it was the middle of the day, but I was dressed to the nines. And nervous.

And it was the middle of the day, but I was dressed to the nines. And nervous. It felt like I was waiting for someone, someone important, but I couldn’t have told you who it was. The house in the background, again, that feeling of prickly familiarity, that I should know who lived there. And wasn’t there a house like that, sometime, some time ago, in the Bower? My old Bower, lost now to Faerie’s intermittent remaking of itself.

Hairology 05.2016 BLOG - 9

The feeling of anticipation was heady, like that feeling you get when you’re waiting for a first date.

The feeling of anticipation was heady, like that feeling you get when you’re waiting for a first date. What on earth was I doing in a little seaside town — at least I thought it was the same town, dressed like that and feeling like that? I’d even brought out my best jewels for the occasion. I smelled something; was it moss? More than the flowers all around, this was a wet smell. As if everything was wet.

Hairology 05.2016 BLOG - 14

And then I was walking out the door of a grocery store?

And then I was walking out the door of a grocery store? What was that all about? And wow, torn jeans, and a feeling of comfort, of belonging, like I lived here… and yet still there were no people No one.

Hairology 05.2016 BLOG - 13

Fresh fruit and veg for days, and no one to buy it.

Fresh fruit and veg for days, and no one to buy it. What was that about? I felt comfortable just picking something up and taking a bite, though. I think it was a cherry. No pun intended.

So. That house. I had to find that house.

Hairology 05.2016 BLOG - 15

I spotted the chimney in the distance and plotted a path.

I spotted the chimney in the distance and plotted a path.

But before I got there—just before I got there, as a matter of fact, I stopped short. There in the front garden, or what might have been the side garden, of this house, was a statue. My statue. The one I bought at the Great Faire auction for … well, for quite a lot of gold, and I won’t say how much. The statue of the harper, called “The Last Hope”. What was it doing here?

Hairology 05.2016 BLOG - 16

It felt like I stood there for hours, wondering.

It felt like I stood there for hours, wondering.

Then, I turned and walked toward the house, which appeared from a short distance to be completely empty.

And I woke up. Without ever seeing the house up close. So much for the mystery of why my  statue was outside.
