The Fae Duchess of Doncaster

Her Ladyship, Beatrice Canderiel, the Fae Duchess of Doncaster, spent a day in Dublin, where she was photographed with her prize dogs at Trinity College.

Fae Duchess of Doncaster, with Dogs

After her formal photographic meeting, she invited the photographer to come with her to one of Dublin’s many beautiful parks, where she intended to show an eager class of primary school students how to find fairies in the wild.

One can whistle

One can whistle, she explained as she put her lips together and blew, eliciting gasps of outrage from the primary school teachers (and possibly an assistant Headmaster or two). However, she said in a swift correction, there are those who believe that whistling is unseemly for ladies; she herself, she asserted, had never been bound by the sanctimoniousness of society.

Sometimes, she said, a flick of the finger is enough

Sometimes, she said, a flick of the finger is enough. She proved this by attracting an amethyst fairy to come and sit on her hand, while its little friend hovered, watching with an animalistic curiosity.

Eventually, she enticed a third fairy

Eventually, she enticed a third fairy. This one was robed in rose, and seemed to be more skittish than the rest; it flew and flitted all about her head as the children chortled. By this time, many of the children had found their own fairies to observe; Lady Beatrice was quick to remind them that snaring small supernatural beings is strictly forbidden by the Fae Concealed Commission, which oversees such oversights.

Fond Farewell

In the end, she bid the students, teachers, assistant headmasters, reporters, photographers, hangers-on, and several gazeboed geezers who just happened to be standing (and we use that term loosely) on the corner as she retreated back to Trinity College to collect her pups and be on her way to the Fair Ferry, where she drifted back to Doncaster, no doubt to be greeted by gaiety wherever she went.

Why I Relay

2017 FF Why I Relay BLOG - 2

I took Dyisi down beneath the mystical portals of the Fairelands Junction.

I took Dyisi down beneath the mystical portals of the Fairelands Junction for our special time together at the Great Faire. I wanted to show her how beautiful the memories of all the Fairelanders were when placed into a special cove. The air was alight with candles, and the roots of the trees went deep, down into the river, symbolising the depth of caring Fairelanders have for their loved ones who are suffering and memorialising those who have gone before.

This year, I have not been as present at the Faire as I have in previous years. The boys are taking over most of the merchanting duties for me now, and I admit I’ve settled nicely in the Faerie Haven at White Owl Island. It feels good to sit back and let work be done by others. But I knew I’d have to visit the Faire at least once this year, to connect with my long-time friend Dyisi and to marvel at the way the Realms shine when they are chosen to be part of the Faire.

I thought Dyisi would love this memorial spot, but instead she grew melancholy.

2017 FF Why I Relay BLOG - 4

“Do you want to talk about it?” I asked.

“I guess I probably should,” she said, and she followed it up with some of those Greek terms of endearment she uses. I persist in thinking they are complimentary.

I said, “See how quiet it is here, but for the water, the birds. Let there be peace. You know you can tell me anything.”

“What about,” Dyisi said, “If we just break the fourth wall for a moment?”

I lifted a brow. “What do you mean?”

“Well, you know how you’re a character from Gwen Enchanted’s imagination?”

I shifted uncomfortably. “It’s not something I usually think about.”

“Yeah, I know,” Dyisi replied. “She gets Queen Gwyneth to be her mouthpiece most of the time.”

2017 FF Why I Relay BLOG - 3

She put her arm around me.

She put her arm around me. “Well…” and here she paused to look up in to my eyes, above her glasses. Briefly, I glimpsed the galaxies within before she looked down again. “I, too, am a character from someone’s imagination.”

I blinked. “Not Gwen Enchanted’s imagination, I hope; that’d be… well, slightly creepy and incestuous.”

“Oh, like your desperate love for Her Majesty isn’t creepy?” Dyisi allowed herself a little laugh. “No, no; I am a character from someone else’s imagination, and she is a very good friend to Gwen Enchanted.

I rubbed my chin, shook my head. “Confusing.”

“That it is, Davey,” said Dyisi, with a sigh. “This place makes me think of the imagination from which I spring, and I’d like to tell you a story from her perspective.”

2017 FF Why I Relay BLOG - 4

“I’m listening,” I said. And I held her.

“I’m listening,” I said. And I held her.

A few words from the mind behind the satyr..

First off, let me thank Gwen.. who has been an amazingly dear friend to me for years now.. for allowing me to say a few words.  Her blog has been a great source of entertainment and touching stories that is more than just a labor of love.  But an outlet for her beautiful and talented soul.  So I thank her from the bottom of my heart to be apart of not just her stories, but her life.  As well as her dear husband Joe, who also touched my life in a very remarkable way.  He is missed deeply.

There is also another woman who has been an influential part of my life, as well as having been my rock.  My mother.  She passed in June of 2013 after a short battle with lung cancer. Her diagnosis was in March of that same year.  So we did not have a lot of time in the end, and even though I am told not to have regrets, I do.  It’s hard not to, especially when her life ended so quickly.  Things I wish I could have said, wishing I could have been there at her side when she finally passed.  While I still hold to these regrets, I also look back at the life we lived.  She was an amazing woman, strength in the face of all adversities..  Be it her time spent in the Marines during Vietnam, or the life our family lived.  Her sense of humor never wavered and in that taught me to laugh when things feel hopeless.  For that, I will forever be thankful.  She also did her best to try and protect me from death, even though it’s inevitable.  This does include her own death as she insisted I stay home… three thousand miles away.  Despite my better judgement, I listened to her, because she is my mother..

Cancer is not new to my family, as it has claimed so many on my mother’s side.  Her father passing from leukemia, while lung cancer claimed her mother, aunt, and a year after mom died, one of her sisters.  Even my cousin’s little girl fought leukemia, which I can happily say she is in full remission.  At the beginning of this year, a close childhood friend had lost her battle with cervical cancer.   This monster is all too familiar to me, and so this is why Fantasy Faire has become important to me ever since I discovered it. I thank the creators and participants.. vendors and supporters..   for all that they do for the American Cancer Society.  Helping those who work tirelessly to defeat this monster so that no one else.. no more of our loved ones and own selves..  will fall into it’s clutches.

Thank you.

I’d never seen tears from Dyisi before, but now I did. And I confess I buried my face in her hair to staunch my own.

2017 FF Why I Relay BLOG - 5

I shall not tell you how we spent the rest of our night together.

I shall not tell you how we spent the rest of our night together; I shall only say that the unlikely friendship between Gypsy and Satyr—and the unlikely friendship between American expat and Seattle dilettante—continues to be a force for good in the world.

Let all your stories out. Let all your tears flow. Recognise that together, we are stronger than cancer, stronger than the losses we have sustained because of it, strong enough to go on. Those candles burn for every beloved person who has passed to the other side of the Veil, for every beloved person who wakes up to fight another day, for all of us who contribute, with our time and our money and the love in our hearts (which knows no end).

Catalina Staheli’s “Why Do You Relay” photo of The Amazing Catwoman, from the 2015 Fantasy Faire.

Catalina Staheli took this photograph of The Amazing Catwoman at the beginning of the 2015 Fantasy Faire, my (Gwen Enchanted’s) first year as a Fantasy Faire blogger as part of her “Why Do You Relay” series. That was the year my husband, Joe Raftery, was moved from curative to palliative care. My heart was on my sleeve then, and it is now, as well. Eight months after this photograph was taken, I became a widow. Fairelanders, one of my SL tribes, supported me through his illness. My roleplaying tribe, which includes Dyisi, whose beautiful words are above, were with me constantly. My real life family stayed by my side and have never left me. I am rich, rich in friends and rich in family. I am also rich in memories. Why do I relay? I relay because, at fifty-one years of age, I am still too young to be a widow.

Once Upon a Fairy Tale…

once-upon-a-fairytale-blog-3

Yesterday, I took the Gypsy Davey to Once Upon a Fairy Tale.

Yesterday, I took the Gypsy Davey to Once Upon a Fairy Tale.

The sim, which is currently in the SL Destinations Guide, is a whimsical smorgasbord of several floating islands depicting various bits and pieces of fairy tales.

once-upon-a-fairytale-blog-1

Davey, of course, went straight for the Elven Pavilion.

Davey, of course, went straight for the Elven Pavilion, to pay his respects to the goddess and to have a photo snapped with her earthly depiction.

We then spent some time just roaming around the sim. There’s a lot to see, and no way to capture all of it in a series of photographs.

once-upon-a-fairytale-blog-4

I was reminded of all the time I spent in 2007 searching out SL Stonehenges.

I was reminded of all the time I spent in 2007 searching out SL Stonehenges. That entry is somewhere on LiveJournal, but suffice it to say I used to love finding stone circles in odd places (people’s living rooms, pubs, the backs of trucks….). It was a fun hobby, particularly back when wearing the wrong pair of shoes could result in, um. Teleportation fail ring a bell, anyone?

once-upon-a-fairytale-blog-5

Above this particular stone circle, two dragons are locked in eternal battle.

Above this particular stone circle, two dragons are locked in eternal battle. In the distance, you can see the topmost point of the Elven Pavilion. Davey thought we should at least try to scry out who would be the winner, but I, because I may be slightly more versed in Arthurian myth than he is, told him we should let it go and move on to explore other parts of the sim.

once-upon-a-fairytale-blog-6

Selfie with the Buddha?

Selfie with the Buddha? …Yeah. We arrived at an Asian corner of the sim, and Davey insisted on having his photograph taken with this statue of the Buddha. Cheesy grin, “come at me bro” pose, and all. Sometimes I don’t know what I’ll do with him: he manages to be charming throughout these juvenile flights of fancy, so it’s impossible to be angry with him, but still. I’m not sure the Buddha was all that impressed, though bless him, Davey did not try to rub the statue’s belly for luck on the way out.

once-upon-a-fairytale-blog-10

Eventually, we came upon Davey’s own people.

Eventually, we came upon Davey’s own people, in the form of a Gypsy Fortuneteller. Davey was properly respectful and asked me to hang back while he talked to the woman. Later, he explained that while business was slow for her, he didn’t want to alarm her: it isn’t every day that the presumptive King of the Gypsies, albeit from another Realm, shows up at your fortunetelling tent, you know?

once-upon-a-fairytale-blog-9

“Davey, what are you doing with that spyglass?” I asked.

“Davey, what are you doing with that spyglass?” I asked. “You aren’t even holding it right.”

He turned to me with an elongated sigh. “There are beautiful women around here,” he said. “I just know it.”

“I am not spending the day as your wing man,” I said.

“I don’t need a wing man,” he replied.

OK, that may be true, but I didn’t want him to start wooing women and getting the whole sim in an uproar. “Why don’t we go and look at the unicorns?” I suggested.

once-upon-a-fairytale-blog-8

“Look at this tiny house!” Davey shouted.

“Look at this tiny house!” Davey shouted. “Even I’m too tall for it!”

I just shook my head. At least he wasn’t horndogging.

once-upon-a-fairytale-blog-7

“You should call this one, ‘Even Unicorns Love Me!'” Davey suggested.

“You should call this one, Even Unicorns Love Me!” Davey suggested.

“Do you have to plaster on that cheesy grin every time I take your photograph?”

“Yep. Makes me look seductively sinister.”

I may have actually face-palmed.

once-upon-a-fairytale-blog-11

Airship ride

But all Davey’s bravado and silliness were knocked aside when we discovered the airship. He was silent and fascinated. And probably trying to read over this poor guy’s shoulder, but that’s a skill you learn when you spend a lot of time realm-hopping. It’s a good way to figure out where (and when!) you are.

Gwyneth:

I don’t know why, but I’ve been thinking a lot about my childhood lately. Perhaps it was the question one of the unpleasant and omnipresent Seelie Court Ladies asked back at the formal Samhain Feast, which is a lot like Christmas Dinner With Aunt Trudy (c’mon; we all have one) in that it is both boring enough to stretch the boundaries of time and space and interesting enough that something you do (and by ‘you’, I mean ‘I’) there will be remembered for years to come and be part of the reason why Aunt Trudy eventually cuts you out of her will.

She asked, in all seriousness, ‘Do you feel you missed something by keeping your children in those crystals until they matured?’ I replied that of course I didn’t feel that way, but I think the idea of childhoods, childhood, is seeping in to my brain. And no: that doesn’t mean I’ll be working on any new gestational projects.

The time I had to walk home alone from drama society is one of the memories that keeps coming up.

The time I had to walk home alone from drama society is one of the memories that keeps coming up. Both my adoptive parents were lecturers at the University of London, Goldsmiths, and the rule was that each lecturer had to do one evening class per term. They tried to space it out so that there was always at least one parent home in the evenings, but one time something went wrong and Mum’s class got rescheduled for a day that coincided with one of Dad’s classes. That also happened to be drama society night, so I was meant to stay late at school to rehearse for the school play, in which I had a small but important part, obvs. I must have been twelve or thirteen, but it’s funny, isn’t it, how you’re always sort of yourself in dreams, like how you are now and not how you were back then. Or I always am. So there I am, a tall, pointy-eared Sidhe sitting in a rehearsal room with ten other kids, waiting to rehearse my two-line scene. Nobody noticed of course: they would have been seeing the old me. When it came time to walk home, I shook off aid from teachers and offers from some of the other drama society kids to walk me home, and I set off by myself.

no-one-following-blog-2

I had the overwhelming fear that I was being followed.

I had the overwhelming fear that I was being followed and the natural rational brain reaction that I was just on edge and scared because it was quite a long walk home and it was almost nine o’clock when the rehearsal ended. Mum and Dad would be finishing up their lectures and handling questions; they might be moments or hours, depending on what the students needed.

I just remember that sharp stab of fear I felt, looking back and seeing a long shadow following me, and the shame and anger I felt when I realised I’d actually been afraid of my own shadow. But now, knowing the twists and turns of the Fae mind the way I do, I’m not so sure. Maybe someone — or something was following me that night. I mean, I’m pretty sure no-one was actually following me.

Pretty sure.

Getting Ready

New Blog Headers - 9

Gwyneth:

I love decorating. Always have. What I don’t like is the idea that I’m decorating maybe for people other than myself. The Atrium has to be a place where I can receive beings of all races and creeds, and it needs to have an appealing and comfortable atmosphere. I also need to be able to host visitors in the Atrium, so I’ve designated two of the rooms there as guest rooms for visiting folks.

I guess one of the guest rooms should have a more mortal feel to it, and I’ll make the other decidedly Fae. I’m not going to redecorate every damn room just because, say, a vamp or a demon drops by.

hairology-12-2016-2-blog-3

One half of the room was easy enough!

One half of the room was easy enough! That genius at Fallen Gods made this couch. He calls it “Justine”, but I’m not sure if mine actually has a name. Anyway, lots of people can sit on it at once, and it has the plus of coming with many matching pillows and accessories, so it easily fills half a room.

hairology-12-2016-2-blog-2

And of course, I had to get the place ready for Yule as well.

And of course, I had to get the place ready for Yule as well. I found the most amazing tree, created by a designer I’m only just getting to know, Dema Fairport. It’s a tree made out of books! I giggle in anticipation of what Nathaniel will say when I show it to him. She also designed this hearth, which gave me a perfect space to put in all those Fairytale Villains collectibles I picked ups. couple of years ago. And yes, the big box on the floor by the tree is for Nathaniel. I put in a formal dining table because I suspected I’d need one; Bran will be pleased. And of course I had to put the espresso machine in a place of honour, if only so that Nathaniel will have nightmares.

All that magic is tiring!

All that magic is tiring! Well, for a moment or so. When I am back in my little grove, my energy replenishes more quickly than I thought it would, this being sort of Faerie-Light. In any case, I felt ready to do at least one of the bedrooms.

Of course, my guests have got to have somewhere comfortable to sit, so I chose this bench from Death Row Designs, because it’s mundane with a bit of a Fae flair to it with the curtain and the sparkly lights and all.

Putting it all together

Gwyneth:

Today, I began working on my throne room for White Owl. I know: I’ll probably never get to use it, but it’s a good exercise in decorating, and I was bored.

Below is a photo of my new throne — the demifae are enjoying it, as you can see. I’ve also acquired two new kittens—not CaitSidhe, but honest-to-Goddess kittens! The one on my lap is called Skein, and the black one is Urðr. Of course, this means I’ll have to get two more kittens, since I can’t overlook the other principal Norns.

The throne itself is grown from a special spell provided by the Master Wizards at Hextraordinary. I found them at that most excellent shopping faire, We , and they delivered it for free! Of course, tree thrones are a bit hard and somewhat scratchy, and the Royal Bum cannot deal with that for long periods of time, so I added a bunch of throw pillows I picked up from a gypsy at a gacha Faire some years ago.

Of course, I had to call Nathaniel for his approval (he always approves, does my Beloved Consort), so I summoned a will o’ the wisp to get him there quickly. The will o’ the wisps seem to like me much better now; I can communicate with them easily. Then, I got sentimental and summoned Drysi as well—she’s the only one of my children who reliably comes when called—and she surprised me by showing up in a very fetching dress! Of course, she’ll be back to jeans and t-shirts as soon as she’s out of my presence, not that I mind her dressing up to please her Mother.

I thanked the will o’ the wisp when it returned, of course. And what a lovely feeling of oneness I had with it! I must investigate the Unseelie connection to wisps more carefully at some point.

I have more work to do here, of course, but what a joy it was to write this from my office, in another of my realms, and not have to appease the Luddite Goddess by hopping off to another Realm to access the internet!

Now, of course I have to decorate both the Residence and this official Receiving Area—I think we’ll call it The Atrium—for Yule. Which will keep me busy at least for a couple of hours. I do have the perfect tree in mind for Nathaniel. I hope he loves it.

Wasabi Pills, and New Looks for Gwyneth

New Blog Headers - 9

Gwyneth:

Hm. I’m not going to do a story blog today, because I have so many cool things to talk about, but I do want to write about Gwyneth. You see, in the New Year, we’re going to be opening a role-play sim, and it’ll have a much more modern feel than the places I’ve played Gwyneth regularly over the past six years. Some of you know that both TAC and The Gypsy Davey are all personae under this avatar. Showing up as The Gypsy Davey to writing workshops has surprised more people than would admit it!

Anyway, in our new modern role play sim, Gwyneth will be dressing as a modern-day person, and she’ll get to use a computer at her own home, rather than having to realm-hop to leave her blog entries all over the place. TAC will also get more of a role as a character. I don’t know about The Gypsy Davey, but we shall see.

While I’m thinking about new looks for Gwyneth, I have some beautiful hair from Wasabi Pills to show you. Becoming a Wasabi Pills blogger was a huge surprise and a rush for me; I’ve always loved the hair that the very talented Miss All Sunday Lemon creates, and my role play characters have been in her hair since I first started roleplaying with Gwyneth as a character something like five years ago.

The Visionaire course is teaching me so much, and this week’s lesson was about portraits, so for each outfit here I’ve tried to create a portrait that would stand up as more than “just” a blog photo.

Gwyneth, Queen Gwyneth…

Oh, Gwyneth, Queen Gwyneth. No matter where she is living, Gwyneth, once anointed, will always be a Queen of the Fae. You can’t just hand that title back, and in communities where there are Fae, you can’t hide from it, either: other Fae will always know if there is someone Royal among them. And now that she’s a Winter Queen, she has more options. Here, she’s in Wasabi Pills‘ gorgeous Marisol hair, which you can get at Uber for just a few more days! Uber’s new round will open on the 15th, so hurry! After that, the style will be available at the Wasabi Pills Main Store, of course. This dress is from the ever-amazing Enfant Terible, a late addition to the October Treasure Chest. It just arrived yesterday as I was putting together these outfits, and I knew it’d be perfect for showcasing Gwyneth as a fantasy Queen in a modern setting. The leather bodice over the draped silk skirt conveys the perfect marriage of old and new, and of course Enfant Terible’s quality is impossible to beat: the dress is perfectly sized for my Maitreya body, and the fatpack that came to the Treasure Chest has an array of choices via HUD. I don’t usually photograph Gwyneth in tattoos, but when I saw this one by White Widow at The Winter Trend, I just had to have it. Gwyneth loves roses, and of course roses have many associations with the Fae in literature and balladry. The headdress was a chance find, at Cosmopolitan, not surprisingly by Persefona, whose headgear continues to surprise and delight. The necklace is one of the most gorgeous things I’ve seen from The Plastik in a while (and that’s saying something!). It’s called Skeinand I love its simplicity and the fact that there are an array of stones and metals to choose from. Thank you, Vae, for this beautiful necklace: it’s one of those things that if I had it in RL, I’d never take it off! Of course, in RL, we can’t change gems and metals with a touch of our fingers….

Roses.

Roses. Gwyneth loves them, and I wanted to show both that and the luminance of this beautiful DeeTaleZ skin. I love blogging for Lumae and 7 Deadly s{K}ins, but if I could add any skin maker to my blogging list, it would be DeeTaleZ. This is the Fonda Catwa applier in tone Celtic, and of course the Maitreya appliers for the body are sold in the DeeTaleZ main store.

Gwyneth, dressed for a Pacific Northwest Winter.

Here’s Gwyneth dressed for a Pacific Northwest winter. This beautiful wind-blown hairstyle is new from Wasabi Pills at this month’s Chapter Four. The style is called Solana,  and it’s in the Gacha section. It comes both as the windblown and the non-windblown style, and of course the multi-packs and ombres are rare, but the great thing is all the regular Wasabi Pills colours are commons, so if you wear one of their plain colours, you can probably get your shade pretty quickly. This lovely outfit is by Purple Moon Creations, the Sonia Jacket+Sweater and trousers (sold separately), and you can get it at The Winter Trend, which opened on 9th December and will stay through the 23rd of December. The boots are from Phedora, the Matilda Boots, also available at The Winter Trend

Dragons in Winter?

Dragons in Winter? Well, anything can happen on White Owl Island. This skin is from Avenge, the Anya Albino applier for Catwa, in Ivory. It’s another one of my finds from The Winter TrendThroughout all these photos, Gwyneth is wearing the Catwa Destiny head, Mandala Steking ears, and Mesange Omega eye appliers; the eyes are from various sets, but these are the Taiga appliers, which again are available at The Winter Trend

Sense of Wonder.

Sense of Wonder. This photograph was inspired by some of the photos we saw at this week’s Visionaire class on portraits, even though my guess is it wouldn’t be considered a “real” portrait, since the focus is more on the interaction between Gwyneth and the little dragon than on Gwyneth herself. But you can see the beautiful highlights in the Mesange eyes here. The little dragons are by Half Deer; they were gachas from one Arcade or the other, the Solstice Dragons. Here, you see Leviathan; the previous photo’s dragon is called Permafrost.

Brunette Gwyneth!

I’ve envisioned Gwyneth as a brunette a couple of times over the years, but with the DeeTaleZ Fonda applier, she really seemed to come alive for me. The hair is Wasabi Pills Deirdre, which is new at Collabor88 this week. I should mention that for all events, demos are always available at the Wasabi Pills Main Store, which means you can try before you buy even if you can’t get into a super-popular event on the first day! The headband comes with the hair, which is a nice bonus. This blouse is a favourite recent release of mine; it’s from TETRA. It’s called, prosaically, Lace-Up Wool Sweater, and it comes in a variety of colours. Pretty sure the event I found it at has closed by now, though. The boots are from Breathe, the Satomi Boots in black. These are a gacha at The Chapter Four event.

With a closer look, you can see the intricate texture of the hair, the almost glowing quality of the skin, and of course the way those gorgeous eyebrows set off the rest of the skin.

Pink and slouchy!

Here’s a final outfit, because I wanted Gwyneth to be able to be a bit whimsical, even if she’s now in a place where everybody wears a stocking cap and it’s misty and moisty a lot of the time. For this I chose the Wasabi Pills Romy hair, which is available for a few more days at Ultra. You can wear the hair with or without the hat, and the hat comes with loads of textures, both solids and this little anime-type not-sure-what-kinda-animal-this-is face. This adorable sweater with super-long arms is from EVIE; it was part of November’s The Forest event, so I’m not sure if you can get it from their main store, but it’s worth a look. It comes in a number of colours, and, oh look! I have a pair of these cool Satomi boots to exactly match!

Gwyneth can look classy even in a silly hat!

Gwyneth can look classy even in a silly hat, it appears; I’m not sure if I could bear to make her look ridiculous, but one day I’ll try. Once again, it’s the DeeTaleZ Fonda applier that makes her appear to glow like this; even under normal lighting conditions and not in a photo studio, she appears almost luminescent when she’s wearing these skins.

Thanks for reading, if you’ve made it this far, and I’ll try to get back to story-blogging as soon as possible—but in the next post, I have (yet more!) hair to show you, this time from the wonderful Hairology event, which opened today.

No Style Cards today; everything’s covered in the text, except: all poses by an lar, from the Illa Series, available now at The Liaison Collaborative.

Spiffy photos taken with the indispensible aid of my LumiPro. I never try out all the new portrait tricks I learned in the guise of a fashion blog without it!
