Introduction

You don’t know me, but you’re about to. My name is Angharad Eleri, and I am just over 100 years old. That makes me, in my conservative Cymric parents’ opinion, old enough to strike out into the world. Really, in this day and age, most Sidhe parents allow their children to grow up in about the same timeline as mortals do, because our long lifespans allow us to accomplish so much, and because so many of the mortals that we must spend time with have such short lives in comparison. But I was born in 1908, and things were different then.

My introspective moments

In my introspective moments, I sometimes think about friends of mine, members of Clan Eleri who were born so much later than I. They already experience the wider world as adults, while I’ve had to sit at home and learn old-fashioned Sidhecraft and tell stories to another generation of younglings who all fly the nest before me.

A relaxing garden

So now, eight years after I came of ages according to my parents, here I sit, in a relaxing garden, a few days before my internship will begin. And I’m glad I waited. The decision reached by the Global Ministry for Supernatural Affairs, or whatever it’s called, means I can live in a place where I can walk among humans but still have a more-or-less Fae environment. When word went out that Queen Gwyneth was opening the first Fae realm to be accessible for mortals and other beings, I jumped at a chance she didn’t even offer; I sent her a message asking if she needed a hospitality intern. I always knew I wanted to travel, and going in to travel, tourism, and hospitality just seemed like a logical choice.

Settling in

Now I’m just getting used to the environment. It’s a full season before I start, but as it’s my first “real” job, I wanted to get the lay of the land. The thing is, Awenia is very far from anywhere else, and the Realm is constantly in flux. It looks a lot like Her Majesty just can’t decide what she wants it to be. Now, there are rumours that Faery may completely reshape itself to be more accessible to tourists. It seems pretty accessible to me, but what do I know?

A new discovery every day

Today, I discovered this beautiful little pool. I think it was some kind of ruin last time I came here. Anyway, it has a lovely old arch, and there are trees and tables and benches all around. The perfect place for a late summer afternoon thinking session.

Wondering

I wonder what my actual duties will be. I’d love to be greeting visitors and giving tours of the Realm, but I’m sure there will be some administrative bits and pieces as well. I know Queen Gwyneth wants there to be different kinds of experience tourists can have, like a midnight excursion into Unseelie Lands for those who like to be scared a bit. Maybe she’d let me come up with a few of those ideas on my own. I don’t know how much of a control freak she is: a lot of Fae royalty are really my way or the highway types. Don’t you love that expression? I learned it when I was attending university in the fifties. It’s probably a really old expression that kids don’t say any more. I’ll have to learn all the latest slang so I don’t sound stupid with youth groups. There’s so much I’ll have to do.

TWP SOS BLOG - 2

Stretching

But now, the light is starting to turn golden, so I’m going to go down the pub and see if I can get to know some more of the local beings who are helping to put the Realm together and make the administrative stuff work in the end.

I don’t want to say that my favourite part about this is being so far away from my family…. but it kind of is. Realm-hopping is very difficult for most Fae; we can’t all bounce around from Realm to Realm like Her Majesty and her Consort and the other beings rumoured to be in Awenia’s upper echelons. Maybe I’ll learn how if I spend more time with the Queen. I wonder if I’ll get to spend any time with her at all: she’s quite famous, even though parageographically, Awenia is sort of on the edge of nowhere.

But I am digressing now. It’s time to go off to the pub.

Angharad originally started life as a photographic avatar, years ago when I was participating in the Create Your Own Tarot events, and I called her “Teenage Waste Princess” because coming up with a name for her just seemed like more effort than I wanted to expend. She also played TAC’s roommate in the History of TAC posts. I found out that “Angharad” as a name means “without shame”, so I thought it was a great name for someone shameless. Angharad will be a permanent NPC in Awenia. I hope you’ll get to know her much better over the weeks to come.

Dressing Room

I love my castle. Designed by Riven (of Rivendale), it’s a joy to live in. I was never so happy to see a building appear in the Realm than when I saw that castle out the window of the (almost) equally beautiful Treehouse. I think in time we shall use the Treehouse for community events as it’s more suited to a Fae tourist destination than the castle. With Enchantment in the air, I of course had many new gowns to wear, and I’m stocking up for autumn. Faith tells me autumn is just around the corner; really it is, and even though it almost always appears to be summertime in Faerie, we do have temperature fluctuations.

The one drawback to the castle is that it’s so big I get lost in it sometimes! And the fact is, it’s not completely decorated yet, even though it’s been in the Realm for coming up on nine months now. Imagine my delight when Bran told me as we made our way home from the Enchantment faire that he’d given instructions to some of the staff to decorate the parlour just below our bedroom tower as a dressing room for me!

My Dressing Room

My dressing room is full of mirrors and comfortable seating, in case I ever end up with a large enough Court that there are ladies who wish to come and assist me in getting dressed. Bran made sure I knew he’d gotten the seating from The Looking Glass, so of course it was pre-approved before I even entered the room itself. One wall is covered with a large wardrobe, and another holds a generous vanity. As you can see, the windows have bookshelf seating, from Noble Creations, which means the room has a bit of multipurpose built in. I can imagine reading on a rainy day (yes, we do have those!) while a lovely mortal musician gives us all some soothing background music. Just the thought of that makes me smile. Mirrors from Refuge and anc adorn the walls, and there’s even a copy of the beautiful clock from Erstwhile Station. The only thing I’ll add after the fact is possibly a rug, although the floor designs are so beautiful in this part of the castle.

Now, those of you who follow this blog (all two of you!) probably know who my go-to dress designers are. You’ll recognise the delicate, detailed, and altogether competent hand of Junbug on this gown I’m wearing. I picked up the Storm Violet gown at the Enchantment faire, and I must admit I got it in more than one colour, so I’m sure you’ll see it again, because September is just around the corner.

Exquisite sleeve detailing

The detailing on these sleeves is exquisite, isn’t it? I also love the necklace, which is a quick-stop find from Swallow. Those marvellous ladies at Little Bones did my hair, and I’ve never been so happy to have extensions braided and waved; it’s given my hair such a loft and lustrous texture.

I loved the dressing room so much I made Bran bring all the folks who’d had a hand in decorating it straight to me, and I gave them all a kiss! Nothing like seeing a Sidhe blush. So cute!

I confess I was so tired of Bran taking photographs of me on this day that I just threw my hands up and told him I’d have no more photography of the dressing room, thank you very much; I wanted to curl up with a book in my new safe haven. I think he was a tad miffed. But since I’ll be spending an awful lot of time in this room, I’m sure there will be plenty of opportunities for photographs in the months and years to come.

Summer Dreams

A new month, and here we are just past Midsummer. Because I have a lot on my RL plate right now with work, I thought I’d just tell you about some of the amazing things I found at Hair Fair, with the promise that there’s plenty more to come from that quarter. Throughout the month of July, I’m going to try and take one photo every day with a different Hair Fair hair; however, this is a goal and not a promise. I know I’ve been far too sporadic with blogging over the last few months, and I’m doing my best to get back into the swing.

To start things off, I also have this gorgeous new dress to show you from Silvan Moon Designs. This dress will be at We ❤ Roleplay, which in July starts on the 5th of the month and not the 4th, to accommodate Americans celebrating the July 4 holiday over there.

Silvan Moon Designs for We ❤ Roleplay: Le Carnivale Baroque Gown, in Periwinkle

You know, there’s plenty of mediaeval stuff floating around the grid, but even though I almost never have a chance to wear or roleplay in stuff like this, I absolutely love a well put together baroque gown. First off, it’s something I would never wear in real life—all that faffing about! The detailing here is stunning, and I am as usual in awe of Silvan Moon and the two designers who make it all work. The hair here is one of Emo-Tions‘ Hair Fair releases, Calania, which comes with flowers in different colours to complement whatever you might want to wear with it. I thought about finding a more baroque hairstyle, but there aren’t very many out there, and this one works in spirit if not in letter. I also love the chance to show off the long strands that float down behind the head on this one. Gwyneth is wearing the Maitreya mesh body, the Catwa Lona mesh head, Lumae Ruby Skin, Swallow High Definition Elf Ears, and her eyes are the Iskander eyes from Mesange, which may be my favourite of Jadis Ashland‘s beautiful eyes … yet!

Emo-Tions Calania hair and Mesange Iskander eyes

Here’s a close-up so you can see some of the detailing on the hair and get an idea of the depth of these eyes.

These photographs were taken in White Owl Island’s Faerie, in Queen Gwyneth’s garden.

If I wrote a story about these photos, it would be Gwyneth just wandering in her own garden, thinking about the timelessness of summer, that part in the middle of summer when everything might as well be a dream.

Little Bones Naomi Hair for Hair Fair 2017

Naomi is a great classic super long (below the waist length) style. I love the perfect, flat, “ironed” look it has, while still retaining those great Little Bones textures. This outfit is from Uber; I don’t often find great casual clothes that Gwyneth could wear in character, but there were several great things this month. Because Gwyneth is now a fixture on White Owl Island, she doesn’t always have to dress like a Queen. This, once again, is the Ruby skin from Lumae, one of my favourites she’s released this year. The clothes are from Azuchi, the Kara cargo pants and top; they come in a lot of great colours, but this deep red really worked for me when I shot these photographs. The sandals are from Mutresse, the Vaska flat sandals, which again come in about a million colours via a HUD.

HF1 BLOG - 2

Mesange eyes and Forehead Jewels by Lumae!

In this close-up, you can see the forehead jewels Gwyneth is wearing: these are available at the Midsummer Enchantment event. Lumae released four of these for the event; this one is Aaina. The eyes, of course, are from Mesange. They’re the Era eyes, which will be available at We Love Roleplay in a few days.

If I were writing a story about these photographs, Gwyneth would be waiting for someone who either never arrives or who arrives late. In an unfamiliar place, she has nowhere to go but here, so she sits on the steps, finally, possibly for hours.

All the poses in the photos above are from An Lar, the Radi and Nell series.

A friend saw an early version of this photo and said, “Of course you bought that dress.”

Well, duh. Of course I bought this dress! I generally love Moon Amore‘s work, and all I could think when I first saw this Dark Moon Queen dress on Seraphim was how I would photograph it. I think I may come back to it a few more times, because I want to show some of the other colours you can get with the fatpack HUD, and also because I would love to see the dress photographed in some other locations. The dress is available at the Crystal Heart Festival. The hair is another great find from Hair Fair: it’s from Exile, and it’s called Lovefool. Gwyneth is back in the Iskander eyes, though I have some others to show you over the next few days. The necklace is a new favourite from The Plastik, the Grolda NecklaceAs usual with offerings from the fabulous Vae, it comes with loads of colour and metal choices, and her gem textures never fail to make me happy.

There’s not really a story for this photograph. I just thought of Gwyneth, ageless, on a windy day, in front of a door to … well, Somewhere. Somewhere Else; Somewhere Other.

The backdrops in the Little Bones and Exile photos are both from Exposeur; they are the rares from their Gacha Guardians release for this round.

The pose in the Exile/Moon Amore photo is from Roquai, who never fails to be innovative with her great static poses. This is the Mouse from the Chinese Zodiac set.

Because all the information you might want to know about the clothes and hair and stuff is in the text, I’m not going to do formal style cards tonight. I hope you’ll visit Hair Fair and have a great time looking at all the wonderful offerings from great hair designers who come together every summer to benefit Wigs For Kids, a great cause. Don’t forget to pick up some bandanas while you’re there!

Why I Relay

2017 FF Why I Relay BLOG - 2

I took Dyisi down beneath the mystical portals of the Fairelands Junction.

I took Dyisi down beneath the mystical portals of the Fairelands Junction for our special time together at the Great Faire. I wanted to show her how beautiful the memories of all the Fairelanders were when placed into a special cove. The air was alight with candles, and the roots of the trees went deep, down into the river, symbolising the depth of caring Fairelanders have for their loved ones who are suffering and memorialising those who have gone before.

This year, I have not been as present at the Faire as I have in previous years. The boys are taking over most of the merchanting duties for me now, and I admit I’ve settled nicely in the Faerie Haven at White Owl Island. It feels good to sit back and let work be done by others. But I knew I’d have to visit the Faire at least once this year, to connect with my long-time friend Dyisi and to marvel at the way the Realms shine when they are chosen to be part of the Faire.

I thought Dyisi would love this memorial spot, but instead she grew melancholy.

2017 FF Why I Relay BLOG - 4

“Do you want to talk about it?” I asked.

“I guess I probably should,” she said, and she followed it up with some of those Greek terms of endearment she uses. I persist in thinking they are complimentary.

I said, “See how quiet it is here, but for the water, the birds. Let there be peace. You know you can tell me anything.”

“What about,” Dyisi said, “If we just break the fourth wall for a moment?”

I lifted a brow. “What do you mean?”

“Well, you know how you’re a character from Gwen Enchanted’s imagination?”

I shifted uncomfortably. “It’s not something I usually think about.”

“Yeah, I know,” Dyisi replied. “She gets Queen Gwyneth to be her mouthpiece most of the time.”

2017 FF Why I Relay BLOG - 3

She put her arm around me.

She put her arm around me. “Well…” and here she paused to look up in to my eyes, above her glasses. Briefly, I glimpsed the galaxies within before she looked down again. “I, too, am a character from someone’s imagination.”

I blinked. “Not Gwen Enchanted’s imagination, I hope; that’d be… well, slightly creepy and incestuous.”

“Oh, like your desperate love for Her Majesty isn’t creepy?” Dyisi allowed herself a little laugh. “No, no; I am a character from someone else’s imagination, and she is a very good friend to Gwen Enchanted.

I rubbed my chin, shook my head. “Confusing.”

“That it is, Davey,” said Dyisi, with a sigh. “This place makes me think of the imagination from which I spring, and I’d like to tell you a story from her perspective.”

2017 FF Why I Relay BLOG - 4

“I’m listening,” I said. And I held her.

“I’m listening,” I said. And I held her.

A few words from the mind behind the satyr..

First off, let me thank Gwen.. who has been an amazingly dear friend to me for years now.. for allowing me to say a few words.  Her blog has been a great source of entertainment and touching stories that is more than just a labor of love.  But an outlet for her beautiful and talented soul.  So I thank her from the bottom of my heart to be apart of not just her stories, but her life.  As well as her dear husband Joe, who also touched my life in a very remarkable way.  He is missed deeply.

There is also another woman who has been an influential part of my life, as well as having been my rock.  My mother.  She passed in June of 2013 after a short battle with lung cancer. Her diagnosis was in March of that same year.  So we did not have a lot of time in the end, and even though I am told not to have regrets, I do.  It’s hard not to, especially when her life ended so quickly.  Things I wish I could have said, wishing I could have been there at her side when she finally passed.  While I still hold to these regrets, I also look back at the life we lived.  She was an amazing woman, strength in the face of all adversities..  Be it her time spent in the Marines during Vietnam, or the life our family lived.  Her sense of humor never wavered and in that taught me to laugh when things feel hopeless.  For that, I will forever be thankful.  She also did her best to try and protect me from death, even though it’s inevitable.  This does include her own death as she insisted I stay home… three thousand miles away.  Despite my better judgement, I listened to her, because she is my mother..

Cancer is not new to my family, as it has claimed so many on my mother’s side.  Her father passing from leukemia, while lung cancer claimed her mother, aunt, and a year after mom died, one of her sisters.  Even my cousin’s little girl fought leukemia, which I can happily say she is in full remission.  At the beginning of this year, a close childhood friend had lost her battle with cervical cancer.   This monster is all too familiar to me, and so this is why Fantasy Faire has become important to me ever since I discovered it. I thank the creators and participants.. vendors and supporters..   for all that they do for the American Cancer Society.  Helping those who work tirelessly to defeat this monster so that no one else.. no more of our loved ones and own selves..  will fall into it’s clutches.

Thank you.

I’d never seen tears from Dyisi before, but now I did. And I confess I buried my face in her hair to staunch my own.

2017 FF Why I Relay BLOG - 5

I shall not tell you how we spent the rest of our night together.

I shall not tell you how we spent the rest of our night together; I shall only say that the unlikely friendship between Gypsy and Satyr—and the unlikely friendship between American expat and Seattle dilettante—continues to be a force for good in the world.

Let all your stories out. Let all your tears flow. Recognise that together, we are stronger than cancer, stronger than the losses we have sustained because of it, strong enough to go on. Those candles burn for every beloved person who has passed to the other side of the Veil, for every beloved person who wakes up to fight another day, for all of us who contribute, with our time and our money and the love in our hearts (which knows no end).

2015.RFL.Gwen Enchanted

Catalina Staheli’s “Why Do You Relay” photo of The Amazing Catwoman, from the 2015 Fantasy Faire.

Catalina Staheli took this photograph of The Amazing Catwoman at the beginning of the 2015 Fantasy Faire, my (Gwen Enchanted’s) first year as a Fantasy Faire blogger as part of her “Why Do You Relay” series. That was the year my husband, Joe Raftery, was moved from curative to palliative care. My heart was on my sleeve then, and it is now, as well. Eight months after this photograph was taken, I became a widow. Fairelanders, one of my SL tribes, supported me through his illness. My roleplaying tribe, which includes Dyisi, whose beautiful words are above, were with me constantly. My real life family stayed by my side and have never left me. I am rich, rich in friends and rich in family. I am also rich in memories. Why do I relay? I relay because, at fifty-one years of age, I am still too young to be a widow.

The Back Forty

New Blog Headers - 10

The Amazing Catwoman:

So, yeah. I said my mobile was working in that strange forest I landed in. About two hours after I discovered the crag above the water, right after I’d put together a makeshift campsite and managed to gig a couple of frogs for dinner, I got a call from my fixer. Security gig, small town, infested with demons, probably last a week or so, basic demon cleaning, no biggie, nice payoff at the end, accommodation provided by the town in question.

Sounded like a sweet job, so sure, I took it.

You know, nothing is ever the way they pitch it to you. Nothing.

HF2 BLOG - 1

What. The Actual. Fuck.

At first, I thought I might have travelled to the wrong Realm by accident; that’s been known to happen. But no; I was shortly met by Zeke, my contact. Seriously? There are actually people named Zeke? Who the fuck even knew that? And what were his parents even thinking? Jesus. Or Whomever. Zeke took me through the nearly deserted town, explaining that most of the population had deserted the place, “On account of this demon infestation, see?”

“No offence,” I said, and I winced inwardly at that: I think people who say “no offence” usually mean to give quite a lot, but I didn’t, really I didn’t, “but it looks like the population has been gone for quite some time.”

“Week or two, tops,” he insisted. “And why’d they send a demon to take care of a demon infestation, anyway? No offence.”

“Would you like to know how many knives I’ve got stashed in these boots, Zeke?” I asked. “I’m no demon; I’m a svart alfar, and I’m not seeing any evidence of demons around here, so you’d better produce one or I’ll be heading back to my fixer without doing jack shit for you, and you’ll still pay my fee, or you’ll meet some real demons. A lot of very interesting people work for my boss.”

Zeve raised both hands, backed up a couple of steps. “Whoa there, little lady. Nobody needs to be siccing demons on anybody, not with the problem I’ve got.” All this time he’d been leading me down an overgrown street. “Here we go,” he said finally. “Village Garage.”

HF2 BLOG - 2

Yep: it was a garage, all right.

Yep: It was a garage, all right. And holy mother of fuck, there was an old Dodge with the engine on pumping out black smoke like it was in the middle of a full-on engine failure.

“What’s up with the Dodge?”

“That’s the demon.”

“You’re shitting me.”

“I would not shit you about the demon Dodge,” Zeke intoned.

“Right.” I covered my nose with my hand. “Yeah, OK; I can smell the sulphur. You got one of those face masks you use when you’re working with something smelly that might give you some kind of lung disease if you inhale too much of it?” I asked.

“Got a bandana,” he said.

“Great.” Great. Zeke handed me an oily bandana, which I duly tied around my nose. “You know I get a bonus if I clear up your problem in short time,” I said.

“Go for it,” Zeke replied. “I’ll leave you to it.” And he was off down the street. Coughing a bit.

“All right, you little fucker,” I said. “Come out where I can see you.”

“No.”

“Don’t make me fill this car up with chlorine,” I said.

“You wouldn’t. There’d be an explosion.”

“I would. Whole town’s deserted because of you and your little friends,” I said. “And I am not a very patient demon cleaner.”

“It’s just me.” The demon actually managed to sound petulant. “The others got bored.”

“Bored.”

“Yeah: too easy. Once we trashed the church, whole population, vamos.” I think it snapped its fingers.

“Except Zeke.”

“Yeah, except him. I’m working on him.”

“What do you want a shitty little town in the middle of nowhere for?” I asked.

“I dunno. Something about a vortex of evil to take over the whole universe,” the demon replied. “It’s the same shit every job. We’re always going to take over the universe, and we never do, and then there I am, barely a fortnight later, stuck in the belly of a car that still takes leaded petrol, because that is my lot.”

“So you don’t believe there’s actually a vortex here that’ll help your masters take over the universe.”

“Fuck no. This is just make-work. All the big boys are busy with politics at the moment. They have to keep us out of trouble.” A black shape began to manifest out of the smoke the Dodge was coughing up. I could swear it shrugged. “I used to think one day they’d put me on politics, but that was a fucking pipe dream,” it continued.

“So quit.”

“What?”

“You heard me: quit.”

“Can’t. Got debts.”

I rolled my eyes. “You demons have such a fucking caste system.”

The black smoke took a vaguely humanoid shape. It managed to manifest a pair of red eyes. “Very impressive,” I said.

“You don’t sound impressed.”

“I’m not, actually. Seriously: there are whole cities out there with huge demon populations. You could corrupt a couple of kids, pay off your debt in no time.”

“Seriously?”

“Sure. Plenty of work for lesser demons: your boss just isn’t very imaginative.” I scoffed. “The whole ‘vortex of evil’ plot; so overdone. Somebody’s been watching too much Buffy.”

“I loved that show.”

“Me too, but it’s not the same as real life.” The Dodge stopped coughing up smoke and the engine stilled. “Seriously, I’ll pop you off into a Realm where you can just walk into a bar, meet some loser, start stripping souls, make yourself a tidy retirement fund.”

“Yeah?”

“Sure. Here.” I opened up the bag I carry for this kind of work. “Pocket dimension. Pop in there and I’ll transport you to the right place, once I check in with Zeke and let him know the job’s done.”

The amorphous head tilted. “You’re not having me on?”

“Nope. You got kids out there thinking sex with demons would be pretty rad. You can take two, three souls a night that way, and nobody’ll even miss them.”

Shadowy fingers worked as the demon did some internal calculations. “Could pay off my debt in a year that way.”

“You owe six hundred souls?”

“Nine hundred, actually. Married a human and had four kids with her.”

I whistled. “That’ll do it. Yeah; into the bag with you.”

And that was that. It went willingly into the pocket dimension, and I closed the bag with the drawstring. Five day job? Five minute job.

Of course, once I checked in with Zeke I had to wait until sunset to catch the portal out: it was one of those old fashioned ones that only works at dawn or twilight.

So I wandered around a little.

So I wandered around a little. Discovered what is probably the only intelligent life in this town. Checked in with the fixer, made sure Zeke paid him, made sure the funds plus my bonus were in my account. Swapped the bag with one of the demon relocation team. Then, I got myself back to that forest as quick as I could manipulate the Realm stream, because another couple of frogs would not be a bad way to end the evening.

And here’s some more fashion bloggy stuff!

Once again, I’m featuring one of the great hairstyles available at the 2016  Hair Fair! Hair Fair is open until 31 July, and a percentage of the proceeds of all sales go to benefit Wigs For Kids. Hair Fair is the best place to stock up on the latest and greatest hairstyles available on the Grid!

With that in mind, and because there is going to be no way to write a separate story around all the hair I picked up at Hair Fair (I bought a lot of hair…. no one who knows me will be surprised by this!), here are some editorials of other styles I can’t wait to put on TAC for role-play and blog stories in the near future:
