The Rooftops of Lucentia

Gwyneth Blog Header

Gwyneth:

Another day, another Realm. So much to see. I remain in awe of the magicians and sorcerers who bring the Realms together each year for the Great Fantasy Faire.

This morning found me in Lucentia, a city of dark wood and glowing lights, full of the most interesting people. The whole city seems to be powered by some kind of magical crystal set just offshore, in their harbour. I’m intrigued by this kind of magical power: I wonder if we could use the crystals on the Wylds Tree to power things like streetlamps in Mysthaven, that sort of thing. Then again, I’m not 100% sure exactly how Mysthaven is connected to the rest of the Wylds, but that’s another question for another time.

Away from the city, there are a couple of lush forests.

Away from the city, there are a couple of lush forests. Even far out from the city itself, the glowing crystal is visible. I think the spires on top must be some system of providing magical power through the air, but the city planners never seemed to be around when I tried to reach them. I’ll do some research: Nathaniel will enjoy digging in to that, particularly if I promise not to put an espresso machine in our cottage!

From a distance, the city appears to be a massive cluster of buildings and shops.

From a distance, the city appears to be a massive cluster of buildings and shops. When I first arrived there, I asked myself where the people all lived.

And then I looked up.

It’s not hard to get a house party invitation when you’re a Queen.

It’s not hard to get a house party invitation when you’re a Queen. I asked around a bit, found out where the Fae quarter of the city was, and then I just started talking to people. I find that people are always excited to tell tourists about their cities; you have only to ask.

Gwyneth in Lucentia BLOG - 4

On the rooftops of Lucentia, there are houses!

On the rooftops of Lucentia, there are houses! Hundreds of them, small and large, flats atop flats, houses atop houses. Each one is a compact entity all of its own. This house belongs to a cousin of the Fae Prince of the city, and he was only too happy to invite me in for tea. He had loads of question about the break up of our Realm, and he seemed very interested in how the politics of my reigning over both Courts of Faerie in our Realm.

We spent a very pleasant evening together; there was tea and cake and dancing: Lucentia has a large store of mortal musicians who are only too happy to play for a Fae party.

As always, when I spend time with people in other Realms, I enjoy thinking for a little while about what it would feel like to live there.

Gwyneth in Lucentia BLOG - 5

But in the end, when the music’s stopped and the cake’s all eaten, I’m happy, when I think about it, that I have my own Realm to go home to after the Faire’s over.

But in the end, when the music’s stopped and the cake’s all eaten, I’m happy, when I think about it, that I have my own Realm to go home to after the Faire’s over. The Prince, whose name I won’t record here, was smooth and charming, as so many Princes are, a fine dancer, and a good judge of wine, though the cakes were not sweet enough for me. Funny: I remember not liking cake when I was young. Once I’d Quickened, everything changed. I’m on what my (adoptive) mother would call on a sugar economy now.

Gwyneth in Lucentia BLOG - 6

I admit, I felt a little tired when the evening was done.

I admit, I felt a little tired when the evening was done. We don’t have enough parties in Wylds for me to be properly resistant to long nights of dancing and carousing, though to be honest there wasn’t much carousing. I think the Prince would happily have taken me to bed, but I had no desire to unite with him, despite his charm and (duh) good looks.

As I took to the air after my day in Lucentia, I thought, as I always do, “I’ll be back. I’ll go back there some day.”

But as always during the Faire, tomorrow is another adventure.

Balloons in Breeze

Gwyneth Blog Header

Gwyneth:

Sometimes, the Faire seems as if it will never end, though with every day there is the rising knowledge that it will end one day sooner.

Anyway, yesterday, I found myself in the Realm of Breeze. It was like walking in to a storybook, the sort of place you never want to leave. It would be hard to have even a moment of melancholy in such a place.

I found this glorious little dress from Jinx, and, from a newly discovered headwear designer (Love) that I’ll talk more about as the Faire goes on, a gorgeous butterfly crown. The most lovely iridescent wings from Soul kept me soaring, and of course I could never be myself without Lumae‘s amazing skin painting and a morning trip over to Analog Dog to put my hair together. That Queue Marlowe is a genius, I tell you, and her Faire styles are second to none.

I could have spent an hour just standing among the trees, looking out on the landscape.

I could have spent an hour just standing among the trees, looking out on the landscape. It’s a good thing glamoured skin doesn’t burn: the pink skies and constant sunlight might have made a red mess out of me if I were a natural redhead. Instead, I come with more magical protections than a £90 Estee Lauder sun cream.

It really is good timing this year, the Great Faire.

It really is good timing this year, the Great Faire. I do not relish the thought of going back to Wylds and having to handle life in such a narrowed environment. I do not think I shall ever see my magnificent tree-house again, for example, and the Great Seelie Forest is but an impression on another floating island.

Gwyneth in Breeze BLOG - 2

Oh, but even a moment’s thinking about that threatened to turn me maudlin.

Oh, but even a moment’s thinking about that threatened to turn me maudlin— and as I’ve already said, it’s impossible to be maudlin in the beautiful world of Breeze.

Gwyneth in Breeze BLOG - 1

Nope, forget those thoughts. Forget thinking about my own Realm.

Nope, forget those thoughts. Forget thinking about my own Realm. Forget the absence of Maric, that last terrifying dream from Gwythyr Gwynn, forget it all. Forget everything but the Realms and the shops and the dancing, just for a little while longer.

So I wandered toward the centre of the realm, where I discovered a massive tent!

So I wandered toward the centre of the realm, where I discovered a massive tent! Outside, there were huge balloons. And I don’t know about you, but whenever I see balloons, I just want some myself.

And you know what happens with a Queen of Faerie wants something. In my hand there appeared suddenly a lovely brace of star-shaped balloons!

Gwyneth in Breeze BLOG - 5

And of course, you know the rest.

And of course, you know the rest—or can guess it. I must have flown around Breeze for half the day, dipping down in to shops, letting my wings and the balloons take me where they would. I’ll be sad, somehow, to go away from such a beautiful land. But I’m sure an equally wonderful adventure awaits me tomorrow.

The Seedy Underbelly…?

Gwyneth Blog Header

Gwyneth:

It’s easy to get the idea, when you visit here once a year for the best shopping in more worlds than we small dwellers upon them can count, that all of the Fairelands are a bright, cheerful, or at least beautiful, place. This is not true.

Each year I’ve visited the Great Faire, I’ve become lost in the woods, felt nervous about this or that strange sensation of being followed or at least lurked (I’m sure you can use “lurked” that way. I’m sure you can. And if you’re not sure, ask yourself: “Do I have a PhD in English literature?” If the answer is, “No”, I’m far more likely to know how to use “lurked” correctly than you are. Just sayin’.)

Gwyneth in Dangarnon BLOG - 6

I think every year there’s a Realm I feel more at home at than in any other.

I think every Faire, there is a Realm I feel more at home at than in any of the other Realms. So far this time around, it’s the beautiful, green, overcast Serenity. I love its monuments and candles. I love its harbour, its waterfalls.

But the fact is, for me, the Great Fantasy Faire is a shopping trip. It replenishes my dress wardrobe for the year to come, not to mention my jewellery stash. I learn how to do new hairstyles. I take cosmetic workshops. I buy shoes. Last year, I bought a replica of Rapunzel’s tower; I kid you not. It was too tall for the bower and not very practical at all: it had only the one room at the top, you see. I don’t know why I bought that. But it’s in inter-dimensional storage now, with more stuff than you probably want to know about. Anyway. Yes. The Great Faire. I was saying. It’s a shopping trip for me. And I’d shopped up every shop I wanted to shop in Serenity, though I’ll likely come back there for a peaceful stay once I’m done with all the shopping. One of the shopkeepers told me I could hail a boat from the Serenity Pier, and that my closest, best, shopping destination was Dangarnon. Which is what I did.

Gwyneth in Dangarnon BLOG - 1

Journeys in the Fairelands always seem almost impossibly short.

Journeys in the Fairelands always seem almost impossibly short, and this one was no exception. Still, I did have time to change into something a little more fun and a little less formal for a day of shopping. “Do I catch the boat to Dangarnon from here?” I asked the fellow who helped me off the boat.

He laughed. “Lady, this is Dangarnon,” he said.

Gwyneth in Dangarnon BLOG - 3

I pointed. “This?”

I pointed. “This?”

“That’s right, Lady,” he said. Some of the other crewmen were laughing now, too.

Gwyneth in Dangarnon BLOG - 4

I used my fae sight to get a good look at the place. “Fine, then,” I replied. “You can take me back now.”

I used my fae sight to get a good look at the place. “Fine, then,” I replied. “You can take me back now.”

Now the whole deck was laughing. “Lady, we ain’t going back,” the fellow said. “We have a couple hours’ business here, and then we’re off to…. Where are we off to, Corey?”

“Malfience, sir!” called the little fellow who started laughing first.

“You don’t want to go there.” He sounded sincere. “But I promise you, the place ain’t as scary as she looks, and there is good shopping here.” At my look, he glared at me. “What, you think I don’t have a wife? I know from shopping.”

Gwyneth in Dangarnon BLOG - 5

I was still sceptical.

I was still sceptical. I mean, look at the place. But sometimes I can’t solve everything with magic or a quick wit, so I shrugged.

Gwyneth in Dangarnon BLOG - 2

“Fine”, I said.

“Fine”, I said, “but if anything happens to me, I wouldn’t want to be you.”

And I turned away from the sniggering, coarse, impolite lot of them, and I marched into the town as if it were the coolest place I’d ever set foot in.

And you know? It kinda was.

On a Winter’s Night

Gwyneth Blog Header

Gwyneth:

It was snowing, and I had been walking for a long time, in high heels, but I wasn’t tired, not at all. I was also considerably underdressed for the weather. I was wearing this gorgeous chiffon-y thing, the sort of thing that that genius Evangeline Miles might have produced, and who knows? Maybe I snuck in to her Realm and bought a boatload of dresses without realising I’d done it. It’s funny: the We Love Roleplay Realm Faire is open now, and I know her designs are often featured there. I should take some of the Sidhe ladies and head over there: there are so many lovely things to be found at this wonderful Faire, and as we’re now in high Midwinter, there are sure to be special things there for Christmas.

Somewhere along the road, the snow began falling in earnest, so that I could barely see. Vaguely, I remember that the word some of my American friends use for this is white-out. That condition of not being able to see because of too fucking much snow. At some point, I recall being picked up, lifted almost as if by magic, and then there was a sensation of movement.

Winter's Night BLOG - 3

Soft fur brushed my cheek.

Soft fur brushed my cheek. As the snow began to fall more softly, I opened my eyes and recognised my own familiar Ballroom. I reached down to feel a strong leg beneath my hand. I felt haunches beneath my legs, and I knew I was being carried, somehow, by some benevolent Incarnation of the Forest God, that he had brought me home from wherever I’d been wandering.

Winter's Night BLOG - 2

As I slipped off the stag’s back, I realised my dress had changed colour.

As I slipped off the stag’s back, I realised my dress had changed colour. My wings felt different. Inside me, there was a cold wildness, and I thought of Desirie, the mad demifae queen, and her crimes, her betrayal of our folk and her alliance with the goblins, and worst of all, her rape of the Unseelie Lord Mornoth, whose soul I can see is kind and honourable. So many things ride on the decision I must make about her fate and how it is made. I thought maybe I had been wandering the Land, looking for answers to this question, all these questions. We need so much healing now. The stag’s incredible strength seemed to help me as I stood.

Winter's Night BLOG - 1

As I turned to thank him, I could feel a change once again in the dress.

As I turned to thank him, I could feel a change once again in the dress. How funny that my life, all the important things, seem so tied to my outward appearance. I know that as the Seelie Queen, I must be the embodiment of love and beauty, but it never ceases to amaze me that if I wake up one day feeling happy, my clothes, my hair, even my jewellery, reflect that. I giggled to see the holly berries round my brow, and the light cotton of my wings brushed against my shoulders as if to comfort me as I stood. The stag’s eyes, so warm and loving and deep, seemed to reflect the unwavering bond between me and the Land itself. I am the Land of course, and the Forest God is also the Land, but so much more.

Winter's Night BLOG - 4

How could I not, in the end, bow before this God of the Forest?

How could I not, in the end, bow before this God of the Forest? As he touched his nose to my lips, I felt a joining, both spiritual and sexual, a re-emergence of my connection with my Land, with my Folk, with the God Himself. He did not speak to me, but I knew, knew in my heart that he would help me on the long road ahead. I knew being Queen would be a challenge. But growing in to the role, learning all those ins and outs, all the intricacies of dealing with Sidhe so much older and more experienced than I, and knowing that I somehow have to bring them all together, lead them all into some understanding, some realisation that together we are stronger than we are apart.

Then, I took the path behind the Ballroom, to the Residence’s back door. I curled up on the couch, before the crackling fire, and fell asleep. When I woke, Nathaniel was curled up behind me, his head resting on my shoulder, and Bran had left a pot of steaming hot chocolate for us both to share when we awoke.

This dress is the Giselle Gown from Evie’s Closet. Once again, Evangeline Miles brings such subtlety and style to a simple dress. Thank you, Evie, for inspiring me. All four colours are available at this month’s We Love Roleplay event.

The poses are from the Le Poppycock La Paix gacha, which is at this months Liaison Collaborative. They are all beautiful and inspiring; not all of them come with the deer, but I chose the ones with the deer because of the story in this post.

All the hair featured in this post is from the Hairology event, which opened on the 10th of December and fills a much-needed space for us hair addicts!

We <3 Roleplay In November

Gwyneth:

Gwyneth:

So, here’s an unusual straight-up fashion blog from me.

I’m trying to get back into the swing of blogging, so I thought I’d take a look around this month’s We Love Roleplay to see if I felt inspired.

This round is low on fabulous dresses, but I did find a couple. I wanted to showcase a few more of the home and garden items, but perhaps I’ll get a chance to do that in a post later this month.

Will you look at these ears!

Will you look at these ears!

The one thing I was absolutely itching to get my hands on from the preview were these new ears from BentBox. They are flexible, animated, come with a load of jewellery and colour options (and are fully tintable if the colour match isn’t right), and they fit very naturally with Gwyneth’s style. In addition to the ears being animated, they offer several idle styles, so you can change your ears to suit your mood, or just keep them in the perfect place for your avatar. One thing I do wish they had is a way to halt animations altogether, but you can’t have everything, and they’re absolutely gorgeous just as they are. I’ll talk more about this dress in a minute, but note that these are my New Favourite Ears and Gwyneth will probably be in them from now ’til I find a new Favourite.

EMO-tions corset and hair

EMO-tions corset and hair

Now, anybody who knows me knows that my hair heart belongs to Analog Dog. But I’m polyhairamorous. 🙂 And the fact is, nobody who’s making mesh hair has as beautiful a silver as Emo-tions. The style is called Jolene, and the headband is attached to the hair, so it fits perfectly. The Sylvana corset is also from Emo-tions, with great wood texturing and ivy vines for shoulder straps that have bee cleverly designed so they don’t quite meet, meaning that if shoulder straps don’t always fit you, you don’t have anything to worry about. The skin Gwynth is wearing is from Pumens, called Fairy Skin; this is the Light version. Now, since I got my Catwa mesh head (Jessica), I have gone mad for anything that’s offering Catwa or Omega head appliers, so I’ve been demoing and buying them like crazy. The skin has a nice, satiny texture, and I love that the designer didn’t puff up the lips and give poor Gwyneth a duck face.

Another view of the Emo-tions hair and corset and the Pumens skin.

Another view of the Emo-tions hair and corset and the Pumens skin.

In this photo you can get a better idea of the skin definition. Eyes are from Ikon, and the tattoos are the ones Gwyneth has been wearing since the most recent Secret Affair event, the Aigneis & Airell tattoos from Things. Bonus: Pumens includes all the major appliers in simple-to-use HUDs, one for the head and another for the body, so it is super easy to apply. The field of flowers, by the way, is the amazing Ichi Fields from The Looking Glass, which I fell in love with at the 2015 Fantasy Faire; it’s been a staple in every iteration of Gwyneth’s Seelie Bower since it became available at the Faire. The stone circle is from Gor Con and again has been a staple of every build; it was an ultra-rare at the Age of Vikings event from yonks ago. Background trees are the Enchanted Wood from Studio Skye.

Ah, Gwyneth, such a faerie fae in this dress from Moon Amore!

Ah, Gwyneth, such a faerie fae in this dress from Moon Amore!

Here is another stand-out from this month’s We Love Roleplay, the Baroque dress from Moon Amore. With each dress pack you get two colours; I chose the blue and white pack, because blue and gold are Gwyneth’s court colours. The stunning wings were an ultra-rare from the Gacha Garden, the Astralia Warrior Fairy Wings. These wings are so beautifully textured, and there are four texturing options to choose from for the wing membrane and two for the veins. Really lovely work. Gwyneth is still wearing those BentBox wings, and because of their length and the anims on them, you can see them even under fluffy hair, like the stunning Gwen hair from Analog Dog. Yes, yes, I know, but it’s still my favourite hair in all the world, for obvious reasons. I still love everything about this hair, and it’s become the basic hair I put Gwyneth in for just about everything except photoshoots where I’m talking about other hair.

A little closer in, and you can see more detail!

A little closer in, and you can see more detail!

The circlet is one of the beautiful rares from an old Deviance gacha at one of the first Fantasy Gacha Carnivals I ever attended; this is the Erulisse Maiden Circlet. The necklace is from Empyrean Forge: it’s The Dreamer, Barn, Serenity. Again, it’s an all-time favourite and I photograph Gwyneth in it a lot. The skin is Lumae Niska PetalsLumiya Rae is one of my favourite skin designers, and an all-around nice person. And if you didn’t know if already, she’s getting ready to make a fresh start on her skin lines, so everything in her main store is being retired and it’s all 50% off. She also has fantastic group gifts if you want to join her in-world group, and she’s one of the most accessible designers I’ve ever spoken with.

Here's Gwyneth in the Shadow Temptress gown from The White Armory.

Here’s Gwyneth in the Shadow Temptress gown from The White Armory.

This White Armory gown, The Shadow Temptress, definitely tempted me! (I apologise for the bad word humour.) The colour way again I chose to represent Gwyneth’s court colours, blue and gold, because I think of this very much as a court gown. My favourite part of it is the fur detailing at the bottom of the skirt. The arch in the foreground of this studio photo is from Solarium; it’s the Medhir Woods Archway, created by Rynn Verwood for her beautiful sim at the 2015 Fantasy Faire.

A little closer....

A little closer….

Here, you can see the bodice detailing a little better.

Will you look at these ears!

I should dock myself ten points for using the same photo twice in one blog entry, but you have to get close to see the jewellery from Cae.

There are a couple of reasons I chose to put this photo in twice. First of all, take a look at the beautiful jewellery Gwyneth is wearing. This is from Cae, called Isabelle; the necklace and tiara are from the same set. It’s not new; it’s a staple of Gwyneth’s wardrobe. The tiara works beautifully with one of my favourite Analog Dog updos, Molly. I got this at the 2015 Hair Fair, but it’s now available at the Analog Dog Main Store. The face jewellery is from Spyralle, called the Forest Edge Mask, and it comes with quite a lot of texturing options. I picked up the mask at an event that I don’t think is happening any more, Illusion Point, but it’s now available in the Spyralle Main Store. Now, remember I said I was really loving playing with Catwa head appliers? This is yet another one, this time Morgana from Pink Fuel. Pink Fuel has been one of my favourite skin designers for years; I lived in Harley for most of Gwyneth’s life as a Princess in the Ashmourne Seelie Sithen. The lips on this skin are so beautiful, not over-puffy, and wide enough so that Gwyneth’s mouth looks realistic; Pink Fuel also does an amazing job with makeups, and there are several choices on the Morgana applier, which comes with a version for both the Jessica and the Annie mesh heads from Catwa. These appliers weren’t at We Love Roleplay; they’re available at the Pink Fuel Main Store. The stunning eyes are from Ikon, natch; they are Triumph Eyes in colour Electric.

Now for some more fun and relaxed shots: Gwyneth with lots of animals, on the Leaf Chair from Ginger Line.

Now for some more fun and relaxed shots: Gwyneth with lots of animals, on the Leaf Chair from Ginger Line.

The Leaf Chairs from Ginger Line come in two different colours; this is Version 2. Version 1 has a green cushion and accents. Gwyneth is wearing the Beatrix gown from Les Encantades, available at We Love Roleplay. I love the sleeve accents on this gown, and Les Encantades has such a deft hand with texturing. So many animals! The Greyhound is from last month’s Chapter 4; he is from meadowWorks. The Winged Cat is from Half Deer, a gacha from a past Kustom9. The Curious Cat was a gacha from Fashionably Dead, and I found him at a past Arcade Gacha event. The Corgi and the Dragon were supplied by Dyisi Oppewall, who helped me set up this shot, and I forgot to ask her where she got them, but I’ll add them in later. The banner hanging behind Gwyneth is custom heraldry created by Nathaniel Ballard, Gwyneth’s IC Consort and one of the wonderful Wicked Wylds storytellers.

Come a little closer!

Come a little closer!

Here, you can see a little more of the dress detailing, and also the lovely Amelie Deux necklace from Zibska (at We Love Roleplay). The headpiece is from a past We Love Roleplay, it’s from Distorted Dreams and is called Aila. This is the Rose Gold version. The hair is Oak Leaf Hair‘s lovely Khaleesi, and I got it on Marketplace.

The minute I saw this gorgeous Mainstay Fireplace from Tia, I knew it belonged in Gwyneth's house.

You can also see some of the beautiful ear jewellery a little better in this photograph. Izzy’s Taleah applier, in tone Frost, is a lovely, fresh face with a lot of depth and great shading. Izzy Button also provides terrific customer service: when I purchased the appliers for the Maitreya body and my SLink hands and feet, there wasn’t an applier for the Frost shade, so I sent Izzy a notecard about it, and she came back to me with an explanation that the SLink appliers for that shad hadn’t been added to the hands and feet applier and were only on the SLink whole body appliers, and she kindly sent me the applier so I wouldn’t have to go back to her store and make a duplicate purchase.

So, partly because of the inspiration chain from knowing wonderful people who create beautiful things, and partly because I miss the side of me that loves to take photos and share beautiful things with the world, I’m going to try and be a little more of an active blogger now.

Later, this week, expect some posts about great stuff available at the Fair Play and Hidden Sanctuary events, plus some lovely skins from 7 Deadly s{K]ins. And I have an amazing bunch of stuff from the community at We Love To Blog, as well. So many things to show you, so little time.

Thanks to everyone who spends even a little time reading my little blog. I hope you’ve enjoyed my yammering on. I’ll make the next one a story, I promise.

Magic Hour

Gwyneth:

Gwyneth:

Autumn on the cusp of winter, now November, now November.

I don’t remember where that’s from, or maybe I made it up just now. It’s hard to remember, these days, which poetry comes from books I read in the before time, and which poetry springs naturally from the Land.

I thought I would feel freer, once the power transition took place, and I guess in a way I do. But the nastiness, the wrongfulness of war hangs over us like some repulsive cloud. The influx of marines and gods-know-what-else from Anemone Valley continues: some of my advisors wonder if they are helping us or if this is some kind of coup d’etat.

But all is not sad, this November.

But all is not sad, this November.

But all is not sad, this November. I shall have for you soon some remembrances of our Samhain Ball, which went off without (many!) hitches; highlights included Arahaelon showing up unexpectedly and promising to stay with us for part of the season, and my dark daughter Drysi stabbing some impertinent little Sidhe noble snot who tried to molest her on the dance floor, no less. He picked the wrong daughter to tangle with. I had to keep my composure during the fracas, but inwardly I cheered for her, for she has a resolve and a tenacity I never had at any age, and her not even half a year old as the sun turns.

Most importantly, and most joyfully, Dyisi has returned to us, though she is much changed: she appeared in human form, near Amazonian in height and walking unsteadily on legs that must feel so strange to her. I recall how dizzy I was for the first few days after my Quickening when I regained my Sidhe height and cast off the mortal glamour that had clung to me since birth, and I do not envy her these next few days, until she gets her land legs, so to speak. And that seems to be the other complication: she has returned to us without a voice, though Kern is valiantly acting as translator. Of course, Kern is still besotted with her, so he peppers all her speeches with remarks about what an excellent provider and general all-around amazing Fae he is. I know she’s quite taken with him, but I can’t imagine her ever calling anyone “Love Morsel”. Still, perhaps he has insights into her that the rest of us cannot reach. Her bond with Maric should prove useful, as they can mindspeak to one another. As an aside, this strikes me as a potential problem with her impartiality: I should speak to Ara or one of the Fae elders if I can get in touch with Roanóafa and see if we possess a similar bonding capability. There is still so much I don’t know about being Fae, and I won’t ask the Seelie Court of the Wylds: they cannot know how much of the time I walk in ignorance.

And speaking of Sad November....

And speaking of Sad November….

And speaking of Sad November, Moxy and I, along with delightful designer Evangeline Miles, had a little realm walk to attempt some shopping on a very boring day, and we came across Sad November, which appeared to be some kind of rustic festival offering the usual goods for sale, along with a kind of exercise-walking course that took you up and down hills and across those sorts of bridges that you have to walk like you’re on a balance beam. Thank the gods for supernatural Fae balance: nobody fell in the mud! Really, I don’t know why they can’t put these market fairs in meadows or town squares or something: why put them in the middle of nowhere? Still, a lot of folk seemed to know about it, as we kept running in to interesting denizens of the many realms.

I found this beautiful dress there, from a company that seems to specialise in goth cotoure, Livid. It’s called Elisabet, and yes, it is a bit of a doll dress, but with a pair of Elizabethan boots and the right hairstyle, I think it works out beautifully. That genius Izara of 7 Deadly s{K}ins did my skin painting for these portraits: I’m so glad when she works with lighter eyebrow shades and the red lipstick was the perfect touch. This is a style she’s called Vlinder, and it comes in twenty-two different varieties. This one is Number 8a.

Magic Hour - 1

I’ve seen The Gypsy Davey in my peripheral vision lately.

I’ve seen The Gypsy Davey in my peripheral vision lately: I haven’t thought of him since he left us just before the Great Fantasy Faire back in the Spring. I don’t think he wants to speak to me: I hear rumours he’s carousing round with some of my Sidhe Ladies, and I’d never deny him his fun. I do miss him sometimes, though. I only mention it because I saw a few things at this Sad November festival that he probably would have liked.

Something about the way the light slants in at this time of year, when the sun is sinking low and the mist starts to come up makes me feel breathless and young. Maybe it’s my memory of the Bonfire Nights on Blackheath. Maybe it’s one more layer of relief over not having the Realm in my hands for the next few months. Maybe it’s about seeing the transition of the seasons reflected visually; I’m not sure. But something about change and the balance of law and chaos, light and dark, form and frippery, puts a tingle under my skin.

Despite the no-doubt grisly days ahead, I think that tingle is hope.

My Trip to Nu Jyorck!

Gwyneth:

Gwyneth:

I know, I know, it was ages ago. But so much has happened. Now that Mabon has come and gone and I have some free time, I’m sneaking cross-world to share the memories of my trip to the alternate New York City with anybody who might be reading this. I know it seems ridiculous, my need to share all this. I guess it comes out of my former life. I mean, if I were going to write a novel. If I were. It would be like this.

So, Father set me up with this very eligible Fae bachelor for a date to a charity ball in an alternate version of New York City. He needed someone on his arm who was a Royal Fae but not connected to any of his political affiliations. I think I only accepted this invitation because there was so much going on at home: goblins, witches, rabid Cwn…. yeah.

Clutie and Dani were only a little upset that I didn’t go with the blue gown they’d chosen previously. Once they saw the kind of shopping there is in Nu Jyorck– which is this amazingly interesting version of New York with an alternate history I’ll get in to later, they aren’t upset at all.

My date, David, turned out to be a total dud. All he wanted to talk about was financial planning. I was bored at “Hello.” Luckily, there were a lot of interesting people to be met at this party! In this version of New York, Fae are an out class, and some of them are upper-class. Mortals love mixing at Fae parties, and some of them will do, well, wow. Just about anything to get invited to a Fae party. It was quite an education, and totally different from the mortal versions of New York I’ve seen on other world hops. But, the politics are brutal, according to what little of David’s prattle I listened to.

The high point of the night was meeting Arahaelon. Wow. Talk about your Nordic elf hotties! This guy, whoa. He knew how to dress, he knew how to dance, he could talk literature and movies, and we started in on alternate universes and the differences between his world and mine. I was completely captivated by this guy. If we’d been in Faerie, I’d have … well. I’d have asked him to be part of my family, if you know what I mean. A Queen is only as powerful as her Consorts, or so they say. But, sigh, I was at this event with David, so I had to spend the evening with him. I figured I’d never see Ara again. And no matter how hard I tried to ditch David, he was always there to take my arm and lead me into another dance.

Before I had a chance to get a phone number or an email address for Ara, we all went back to an acquaintance of David’s for an after-party. But, you know. Fortune was on my side— it was Ara’s place! Apparently he and David have some kind of familial or political connection.

Here's a photo of five of us at the after-party.

Here’s a photo of five of us at the after-party.

Here’s a photo of five of us at the after-party. That’s Arahaelon on my left. Isn’t he gorgeous? The other guy is David, and the woman next to him is his sister Gael. The woman in the front is a mortal: she was all decked out in Fae-fan fashion, an implanted unicorn horn that can apparently be removed very easily, and some beautiful silver sylph ears. I don’t remember her name, but she was funny, very funny, and I could understand what they all saw in her. Everything she did was hysterical: she was the life of the party, even if it was Ara’s house.

The photographer didn't like the first pose and made us all re-pose for a second one.

The photographer didn’t like the first pose and made us all re-pose for a second one.

The photographer didn’t like the first pose and made us all re-pose for a second one. I’m afraid he took me a little off guard: Ara and I were deep in conversation about something, as we were for most of the night, and once the event was over, David wasn’t nearly as omnipresent. Apparently, he expected me to be a firebrand like my adoptive father and not my intellectual, imaginative self. I think he … well, I think he thought we’d end up in the sack. And while David was certainly attractive, ih. I’m much more interested in guys who are smart and excite my imagination than, yeah. David is richer than god, which I guess makes him feel like women are more of a commodity than a necessity in life.

Eventually, it was like nobody else was there. Ara and I just spent the rest of the evening, well, talking. He never once made a move on me, but I got the feeling he was interested. We did end up exchanging contact information.

Just before I went back to my hotel, he made a suggestion.

Just before I went back to my hotel, he made a suggestion.

Just before I went back to my hotel, he made a suggestion.

“Listen,” he said. “I’m thinking about heading down to the Ericksson Pier tomorrow morning, check out the street market. I’ll be there around ten, if you want to come. Leave the sparkle brigade at home; if you want, we can make a day of it, have some lunch, make a memory or two before you head back to your Realm.”

I took down the address.

You know how, sometimes, when you meet someone important, the world just kind of collapses?

You know how, sometimes, when you meet someone important, the world just kind of collapses?

You know how, sometimes, when you meet someone important, the world just kind of collapses around you? Colours seem brighter, stuff slows down? Yeah. This was one of those moments. I knew in a day I’d be on my way back to Faerie though, and I can’t imagine cosmopolitan Arahaelon wanting to come spend time in a Faerie Realm which is at the back end of nowhere.

But I showed up at the Eriksson Pier the next morning at ten o'clock sharp.

But I showed up at the Eriksson Pier the next morning at ten o’clock sharp.

But I showed up at the Eriksson Pier the next morning at ten o’clock sharp. And no Arahaelon. Oh, well: I could enjoy the Pier all by myself, and — oh, no; there he was!

Here we are trying to decide what to do with our day!

Here we are trying to decide what to do with our day!

Here we are trying to decide what to do with our day! We ended up buying stuff for a picnic lunch and then heading over to the Offentlig Eng, the public meadow, which is in about the same place and about as big as most New York’s Central Parks.

So we had a wonderful day, one of those days that gets stuck in your memory and won’t go away. He’s not contacted me since, but you know. Time works differently in different realms. Maybe it’s only been a day in Nu Jyorck.

What Does It Mean…

Gwyneth:

Gwyneth:

Mabon has come and gone, and with it the passage of the Realm’s power from the Summer Queen to the Winter King. My personal dislike and distrust for Maric notwithstanding, I believe he will do his best to keep our realm safe and secure. The ceremony was short and intense: I felt the power pour out of me as if all my breath was stolen, and I’m afraid the King must have had to carry me to my bed. Much as he might have wanted more, the physical exchange of power was an almost ritualised kiss, which I worked in to the ceremony itself. Funny how naturally being a priestess comes to me, now that I’ve been on My throne for more than a year. And what a year it’s been.

I’ve promised myself and the Fae Folk that I’ll not sleep through the winter months this year as I felt compelled to do last year. So much happened while I was hibernating in my beautiful garden, holding on to the spring.

But still, I wonder…

What does it mean to be a Winter Queen?

What does it mean to be a Winter Queen?

What does it mean to be a Winter Queen?

Turn again, Year, and Turn the Queen to Winter
Sing again, Wind, a bring her dancing centre
Call the tales of Mabon, let the power flow
Queen to King and Light to Dark and so the Seasons go.

The Queen is in her Bower, dressed in crimson gold

The Queen is in her Bower, dressed in crimson gold

The Queen is in her Bower, dressed in crimson gold
The Wind has blown the Spring away and left her leaves to hold.

Am I irrelevant? Am I a beautiful figurehead with nothing to do but plan parties and try to teach my children how to interact in our world?

Am I merely the memory of spring?

Am I merely the memory of spring?

Am I merely the memory of spring?

The King waits in the Shadows, cloaked with smoke and horn
We count the Summer down with him and see him rise, reborn

Oh, darkness cloaks the Lady's Bower: watch her wear the Spring

Oh, darkness cloaks the Lady’s Bower: watch her wear the Spring

Oh, darkness cloaks the Lady’s Bower: watch her wear the Spring

Then cast it off like Autumn rags as all the Faery sing

Then cast it off like Autumn rags as all the Faery sing

Then cast it off like Autumn rags as all the Faery sing.

Will I become cold and arrogant?

Will I become cold and arrogant?

Shall I turn dark with the season?

Shall I turn dark with the season?

How do I behave? Does my soul turn cold with October?

How do I behave? Does my soul go cold with October?

How do I behave? Does my soul go cold with October?

Now bring her wings of gold and white, and cast her face like stone

Now bring her wings of gold and white, and cast her face like stone

Now bring her wings of gold and white, and cast her face like stone

Even with the season's turning, I can still feel the warmth of summer inside me.

Even with the season’s turning, I can still feel the warmth of summer inside me.

Even with the seasons’ turning, I can still feel the warmth of summer inside me.

What does that mean? I know I am the spirit of summer, the light of the realm, but….

But there is also the cold. The wind. The dark promise of long nights and short days.

And turn her Widdershins with Wind to make her Winter Throne

And turn her Widdershins with Wind to make her Winter Throne

But there is also the cold. The wind. The dark promise of long nights and short days.

The closing doors of Time will take her into Autumn’s breast
And weave with Wind her Harvest gown, and never, never rest.

Can I see myself, a Winter Queen on a Winter Throne?

Can I see myself, a Winter Queen on a Winter Throne?

Can I see myself, a Winter Queen on a Winter Throne?

Come Mabon, come Samhain, come Harvest, come Hunter
Bring Apples, bring Cider, bring cakes against hunger
Come Winter, come Darkness, come fierce Winter King
And guard well this Lady til Imbolg brings Spring.

Cold, cold, cold.

Cold, cold, cold.

Cold, cold, cold.

Cold.

After the First Death

Gwyneth:

Gwyneth:

After they left, I stood in the reception room for a long time. Just stood there. The silence that settled over the room after I gave the order seemed inescapable, as if even my breath might disrupt the quiet, the heaviness, of that moment.

He attacked Drysi. A goblin attacked my daughter. Galyanna and her Talon, Dakkon, brought the half-dead creature to me, to ask me for justice, to ask for a decision on whether he should live or die.

I asked Galyanna to tell me the circumstances under which she'd found the creature.

I asked Galyanna to tell me the circumstances under which she’d found the creature.

I asked Galyanna to tell me the circumstances under which she’d found the creature.

It seemed he had happened upon Drysi and Mikachu and had done considerable damage to poor Mika before Galyanna had arrived, attacking Drysi also in the process.

They’d tried to get some information out of him, but he knew little and when they brought him to me, he was half dead. I called for Wulfrich.

Dyisi was there, probably canoodling with Kern before this business began, but she swiftly came into the reception room to act as witness.

I heard the story. I thought, only for a second, and I looked to Wulfrich for advice. He saw my unspoken question (he always does), and he nodded.

I told them to kill him, but not to spill his blood in Faerie. I could have declared war on all the Goblin Kingdom for this breach, but I didn’t.

I ordered the taking of a life.

I ordered the taking of a life.

I ordered the taking of a life.

I ordered the taking of a life.

I can’t stop saying it, thinking it, going over it in my head. There was no other way. Had we returned him to his people, his life would have been worth only what information he could give them, and who knows what he’d know or remember in his distressed state. Better, I rationalised, that Dakkon kill him now than he be subjected to the tortures of his kith back in the Goblin holds.

I ordered the taking of a life. A life.

I ordered the taking of a life. A life.

I ordered the taking of a life. A life. A being once living is now dead because of my words, my order, my power.

A Refusal to Mourn the Death, by Fire, of a Child in London

Never until the mankind making
Bird beast and flower
Fathering and all humbling darkness
Tells with silence the last light breaking
And the still hour
Is come of the sea tumbling in harness

And I must enter again the round
Zion of the water bead
And the synagogue of the ear of corn
Shall I let pray the shadow of a sound
Or sow my salt seed
In the least valley of sackcloth to mourn

The majesty and burning of the child’s death.
I shall not murder
The mankind of her going with a grave truth
Nor blaspheme down the stations of the breath
With any further
Elegy of innocence and youth.

Deep with the first dead lies London’s daughter,
Robed in the long friends,
The grains beyond age, the dark veins of her mother,
Secret by the unmourning water
Of the riding Thames.
After the first death, there is no other.

Talking of Designers….

Gwyneth:

Gwyneth:

I said recently that as a Fae Queen, I think it’s important for me to keep on top of fashion. I’m very clear about what I like, and I don’t talk too much about what I don’t like, because what I don’t like is kind of arbitrary and has mostly to do with my own taste than anything else. If you’re reading my blog regularly, you know that I love the hair designer at Analog Dog, for example. And that I greatly enjoy the skin painting of folks like 7 Deadly s{K}ins and Curio and Fallen Gods. The truth is, I don’t wear designs I don’t like, because even my life is too short to wear designs I don’t like. There are a lot of great clothing designers out there in all the Realms, and there are many, many people and companies on my list of designers I love. But. If I had to pick just one. If someone said to me, you can only wear one designer’s clothes for the rest of your reign… Well, OK, I’d smack that person, tell them to get a life, and probably have them escorted out of Faerie. But if I had to seriously answer that question, “Who is your absolute favourite designer ever, world without end, amen,” the answer would be Evangeline Miles.

Evangeline Miles’ clothing studio is called Evie’s Closet, and I’ve been hearing her name bandied about since long before I was in a position to wear such lovely things all the time. Even in Jasper Cove, all those years ago, there were whispers that a person just had to go to Evie’s Closet if they were looking for a beautiful gown.

Well, there’s a new gown from Evie’s Closet! Now, I read all the fashion information that’s to be had both in Faerie and in all the other Realms, so I know when someone is coming out with something new. I also know that the caravans, mostly manned by mortals, taking goods to great faires like We Love Roleplay, often take a detour through Faerie in order to shorten their journeys from their respective Realms. One such caravan came through our lands recently, and well. Let’s just say the caravan driver loved our Fae Mead very much.

Available tomorrow at We Love Roleplay, here is "Evonyn".

Available tomorrow at We Love Roleplay, here is “Evonyn”.

Available tomorrow at We Love Roleplay, here is Evonyn, Evangeline Miles’ newest design for Evie’s Closet.

I managed to talk the caravan driver out of one dress in each colour, and it cost me a pretty penny too, though I’ll probably send a servant to We Love Roleplay to pick up the dresses from the booth itself, since I suspect the caravan driver may have just pocketed the (real! I promise!) money I gave him.

How could anyone say no to a dress like this?

How could anyone say no to a dress like this?

How could anyone say no to a dress like this? It’s summery, the bodice detailing is so intricate, and it comes in five beautiful colours.

Personally, I'm in love with the lilac, but they are all beautiful.

Personally, I’m in love with the lilac, but they are all beautiful.

Personally, I’m in love with the lilac, but they are all beautiful. And I should probably mention the circlet—it’s the one I got from Fair Play, from Independent Objects, such a funny name for a jeweller, but I hear they do other things as well. The necklace is made by an artisan called just Coquette. It’s called Fairy Necklace, which I thought was appropriate.

Another lilac picture, in our magical flower field.

Here’s another lilac picture, in our magical flower field.

I guess that even though I love the lilac so much I should show you the other colours.

Gold.

Gold.

This is the Gold colour. I guess some people would describe these colours as pastel, but I think of them more as dusty.

A closer look.

A closer look.

Hair by Analog Dog (natch!), Tiara from Le Forme, necklace from Empyrean Forge. I still love the way this bodice looks.

Blue.

Blue.

Here is the blue colour of this beautiful dress. I love how there are different colours in the tiers that are all different from the colours in the underskirt. Even using subtle, muted, colours, she manages to make the whole thing look perfectly put together. Mostly because it is perfectly put together.

Turn to the left...

Turn to the left..

Here you can see the back of the dress and how all the tiers interact together. You can also see that this necklace from EMO-tions falls down the back and has a lovely hanging jewel just at the small of the back. It’s called Fairytale. Ha! It’s like I have a whole fairy theme going… wait. Circlet is from On A Lark, whom I’m just not seeing enough of lately.

Sand.

Sand.

The Sand colour way offers the same subtle shading as the rest, but in an even more muted shading scheme. I love how the centre tier is almost but not quite a green.

Blush

Blush

Here is the Blush colour way. I really like this hairstyle by Lelutka with this dress: the simple and classical lines seem to fit so well with the dress’ construction. Necklace is by Cae, and the tiers is from The Plastik.

And now I almost feel a little guilty.

And now I almost feel a little guilty.

And now I almost feel a little guilty, for showing you something before it’s officially released. But it’s a beautiful dress from my favourite designer!

I have so many other things to tell you, but showing you this dress just sort of pre-empted everything, dodgy acquisition practice or no.

We Love Roleplay opens on 4 August 3pm SLT.
