Papa says, ‘Don’t be like your mother’. Papa says, ‘Keep your shoulders covered’. Papa says, ‘Don’t you lift your skirts when you dance’. Papa says, ‘Don’t laugh too loud’. Papa says, ‘Don’t embarrass me’. Papa says, ‘You embarrass me’. Papa says, ‘You’re only a girl’. Papa says, ‘Don’t waste your time reading’. Papa says, ‘Best learn to cook; your looks’ll never bring a suitor’. Papa says, ‘Can’t wait ’til you’re fifteen and someone else’s burden’. Papa says, ‘Listen to your brother’. Papa says, ‘Don’t tell me what you think’.

Papa says, ‘Don’t go up to the standing stones:
‘The fairies there will curse you.

‘And the flowers glow wild with witches’ fire:
‘I’m sure they would possess you’.

Papa says, ‘You’ll be ruled by the moon soon enough:
‘don’t let her ruin you now’.

But Papa doesn’t know that the moon called me.
I was always hers somehow.

So now we dance while the flowers glow,
The stones sing back, and the secrets grow,
And the moon and I, we sit back and smile

And we love all the things that Papa doesn’t know.
