Yes, yes, I know. I bitch and moan a lot about being Queen. It’s not really a fun job. I’m sure some people might read this (assuming anybody ever does read it) and snort with derision: there are people in the world who have nothing, and it would seem that I have everything. But I also believe that my problems, even if they are First World Problems (or, I guess, Otherworld Problems), are real and legitimate.
So sometimes, even though most of my escapes these days are in dreams, I nip away from my little corner of Faerie, to find some other Realm, to explore, to be anonymous.
I landed awkwardly, on what seemed to be a rooftop. Autumn was everywhere, perhaps foreshadowing the season that’ll soon overtake my own Fairyland.
I admit, I felt a bit smug. It’s so hard to get away without some retinue, some little phalanx of the Shining Throng. But there I was, in a delightful modern dress, with a simple necklace of spoon and pearls, and not so much as a little circlet to denote my rank. It’s a good thing we are not at war; I suppose I’d have been more careful back then. I guess I was. Sometimes. When I wasn’t flat-out hiding from the war in whatever Realm I could escape to.
The place was beautiful Nouvelles Aventures, it’s called. So many glimmering lights, beautiful buildings, a friendly populace, birds and animals; I’m sure the locals think it’s very boring. It suited me perfectly.
I surveyed the land from my rooftop, found a place I’d like to spend a little time in.
Just a little corner. It was the word “invisible” that drew me. Because that’s what I wanted to be, you see, just a little while. Invisible.
Invisible. Yes, invisible. Not even for an hour. See that bright yellow flash at my shoulder?
That bright yellow flash at my shoulder is Clutle. Clutie the omnipresent. The tenacious Clutie. She who wakes me up in the morning, she who shrills my schedule into my ear at all hours. She who just popped in (“Oh, no; we’d never mark where you go, Your Majesty…”) to tell me I had to be ready for a meeting with Certain Members of the Unseelie Court to plan our Mabon celebrations. As there’ll be no transfer of power from the Light to the Dark Court this year, I shall have to become the Dark Court. And this will require quite a ritual. It will probably involve acts which are better not spoken of in polite company.
“Now?” I was really annoyed. “I have to go now?”
“Yes, Your Majesty,” she replied. “And we’ve got to dress you beforehand, because you’ll not do like that; no, you won’t.”
What a little madam! “Clute.”
“I hate it when you call me that.”
“I know. Clute, couldn’t I just stay an hour? Look at the peacock; isn’t he lovely?”
Clutie crossed her tiny arms across her chest. “I know you’ll do what’s right,” she said.
“Fine,” I said. “Let’s go.”
And that was that. I raised my arms. I said a mental goodbye to Nouvelles Aventures, its beauty, its sunlight, its glimmering trees, its long grasses. And off we went, to dress me in a Queen’s gowns and prepare me for the coming of Winter.
