Three Twisted Knots

Throughout the Bellisseria 5th Anniversary Celebration, there is a rotating art exhibit called Art in the Park, and the artist and topic changes each week. I was so thrilled when I found out this week’s theme is Maps!

“Look, Galdor,” I said. “Maps!”

“Oh, no.” He dug in with both feet. Talons are sharp, y’all. “Don’t we have enough maps already, at home?”

“Sorry; your remark does not compute,” I replied. “That’s like saying you can ever have enough plants, or enough toys, or enough hats!”

“We need to talk about your hat,” he said.

“We are not going to talk about my hat, Galdor.”

He sniffed. “That’s what you think.”

“Here’s the start of it all!” I said. I might have been a little excited. “Way back in 2019!”

“Way back in 2019,” he said. “Tell me again of your long and glorious history, O Human Sage.”

“Look, you,” I said. I might have swatted him a little. “He fluttered up and nearly lost his balance on landing, which earned me yet more shoulder wounds. I’m gonna have to get some pauldrons or something. But like, how much leather can a cute little Avalon really wear? I guess we’ll find out.

We took a break to get some coffee. Luckily, the coffee stands are open all night, and it was rather late when we started, so we got back to the display sometime after the sun rose. He insisted on another chip buttie (as always) and eggs. Eggs? What kind of moral compass can a bird have, if he eats eggs? When I challenged this, he just said, “Well, they’re not corvid eggs, now, are they.” I just rolled my eyes.

“Look at how much the Realms have grown over the years!” I said.

“You need to cut down on the caffeine.”

“I am ADHD,” I said. “Caffeine doesn’t affect me.”

“Tell that to your shaking hands.”

I went around to all the displays. Galdor became more and more bored as we went. It’s easy to tell when Galdor is bored: he doesn’t shut up. Then again, I guess that’s the way to tell if Galdor is awake. Did I mention I’m an introvert? Did I?

“This seems like a good time to talk to you about this hat,” he said, just before he flew up and tried to remove it forcefully from my head.

“What is it with you and this hat?”

“It looks too much like my hat!”

“This is a steampunk top kinda hat,” I said. I was a little annoyed. “Yours is an engineer’s hat. And you copied my glasses, so you go first.”

“I need these glasses,” he protested. “I am blind in one eye.”

“Those glasses are purely cosmetic and do not affect your sigh in any way.”

“They affect my perception of my sight.”

“Fine.”

He laughed that carky laugh of his. “I assume that, when a woman says fine in the twenty-first century, it’s every bit the same as when a woman said fine in the fifth century,” he said.

I didn’t dignify that with a remark. Even though I kinda wanted to.

As the sun rose higher in the sky and the shadows began to develop, I decided to stop torturing Galdor with my map obsession, especially because he was starting to make ‘lunch’ noises.
