Three Twisted Knots

Tales of the Fae Lands

A Fire Was In My Head

Gwyneth:
Gwyneth:

Nothing like a little Yeats to clear the head.

Yes, I did have a fire in my head. And so I went to The Endless Season for a little head-clearing walk in a beautiful countryside. So many things were on my mind: the children, of course. The news I have to tell, and soon, soon. The worries I have about handling the Faerie Court over the next few weeks.

As I walked down the path, a large crow appeared.
As I walked down the path, a large crow appeared.

As I walked down the path, a large crow appeared. It pecked lightly at my leg until I bent down and started talking to it. You see what I mean: it was a really large crow.

When I tried to communicate with it, I could see it was intelligent, but it seemed frustrated when it couldn’t speak back to me.

Just then, it... she... changed.
Just then, it… she… changed.

Just then, it… or rather she, changed into a young woman. Her speech was broken but understandable. It seems she is called “Nemi”, and she is often a crow but sometimes a girl. She was very interested in Faerie, and she called me the Lady of Flowers. I kind of like that.

Our conversation was brief, mostly because I knew I couldn’t stay long.

Just as I turned to go, she changed again.
Just as I turned to go, she changed again.

Just as I turned to go, she changed again. Sometimes, outside of Faerie, my senses are a bit dull: I could not tell if she was girl or goddess or were, but the creature standing before me took my breath away.

Take only memories.
Take only memories.

What do they say? “Leave only footprints; take only memories.” Well, here is my memory of that little day.

I went back to Faerie somewhat refreshed, but with a little ache in my heart. A beautiful creature, a beautiful being like this girl? She should come to Faerie. She should.

The Song of Wandering Aengus

BY WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS

I went out to the hazel wood,
Because a fire was in my head,
And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
And hooked a berry to a thread;
And when white moths were on the wing,
And moth-like stars were flickering out,
I dropped the berry in a stream
And caught a little silver trout.
When I had laid it on the floor
I went to blow the fire a-flame,
But something rustled on the floor,
And someone called me by my name:
It had become a glimmering girl
With apple blossom in her hair
Who called me by my name and ran
And faded through the brightening air.
Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands,
I will find out where she has gone,
And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck till time and times are done,
The silver apples of the moon,
The golden apples of the sun.
