There’s something wonderful about a walk to work that takes minutes. I could take the scooter, but I keep wrecking it on the kerbstones. I love the way the mist rises off the water some mornings. From the back of our house, the place that I think will become the library, you can barely see the forest shore when it’s misty the way it was this morning.
And what is it, really, about a bookstore? Books are almost a dying breed. I myself read most things on my iPad these days. Nathaniel resists. He stares at my iPad with suspicion. I tried to explain to him once that files full of text are not very big, so you can put an entire library on an iPad. He does not understand how I can read on such a thing. The first time iBooks switched to night mode when he turned off his bedside lamp, I thought he was going to have a heart attack. We are slowly, slowly introducing him to modern technology. It is a series of shocks. I do still intend to have Wren around sometime just so we can make him watch the Twilight films.
But a bookstore. Yes, I sit at my desk, in the bookstore, reading ebooks on my iPad. But most of White Owl Island hasn’t caught on to the technology thing yet, even though I’ve made sure there’s free wifi up and down the High Street. I don’t think most of our residents even own smartphones. Then again, that’s more bandwidth for me, I suppose. Of course, you can’t put properly magical books onto an iPad, or you can’t yet. That might be a job for someone on the Island, if I could only find a proper technomancer. Arahaelon at least doesn’t seem to be afraid of computers, and Dyisi has never shied away from anything new and interesting. I love the atmosphere in Codex; it’s like a bookstore and a book club and a hangout spot and a coffee shop all in one, even though the coffee shop is actually about 10 yards away, or next door.
Speaking of coffee, I think I’ll get some before I open the shop. The guy who owns the coffee shop is usually open way before I’m up in the morning. By the time I make my way to him, the morning crowd (all three of them) are already hanging out outside the bookstore, perusing the used stuff I leave out just for kicks. Funny how my books are never bothered by the humid weather or the frequent rain. I tell people the awning is enchanted. It’s actually the books. But if people knew they were reading enchanted books, they might get ideas.
Coffee. I definitely need coffee.
