I Had a Dream

From Lira:

You may not be aware of this, but Chimerical Librarians (and I would assume other Chimerical creatures) are not meant to dream. In fact, there is debate as to whether we need sleep at all. I like sleep, and so I do sleep, but there is in fact an entire Chimerical rabbit hole in which I would spend the entirety of this post rabbiting (see what I did there?) about whether or not I sleep or just think I sleep or in fact just lie down with my eyes closed and think about absolutely nothing for hours on end, which would in fact describe most of the humans I have met in my short lifespan.

Amsterdam

Anyway. I think I had a dream. An actual one, where I wasn’t in control of what was happening and nothing made any sense.

In this dream, I was standing in front of a window that was lit up in red, in some kind of a city. Every so often, someone (I think it was a man?) would come round and change the position I was in. Otherwise, I was completely stationary, and this did not seem to bother me, which made no sense because ordinarily I am bothered if I stay still for more than a few seconds at a time, unless I am reading or writing or doing any of a number of things which seem to be exceptions to that cannot keep still rule.

I began to realise that people were passing. I mean, this may seem obvious to you, but it was a complete surprise to me in Weird Lira Dream World. And some of them were stopping to stare at me. What the actual fuck.

I hate it when people look at me. It makes me feel, I don’t know. Looked at.

“Hold these.”

“Hold these,” the man said. As if I had any choice. By this time, I’d tried to change directions and stamp my foot and have a tantrum, but it was not working. “There’s a good girl.”

Vaguely, I became aware of the wall behind me getting redder, because my rage was starting to resemble a physical object. An angry, steam-producing physical object. Hot to the touch.

And then everything faded and I was in a different window, but this time I could move and there was no city and no man and no crowd on the street, and no strange sense that I was somehow an object. This was a relief, I can tell you!

The light behind me turned pink. I liked this light very much.

A better light

I like pink.

In fact, I don’t even mind this dress.

I did mind the man and the people, but they were all gone now. I got the impression I had somehow made this happen, which was not an unpleasant impression.

It came to me that there is a kind of dream mortals refer to as “lucid,” in that by some miracle they have agency over their actions, thoughts, and outcomes. I reserve judgment on whether mortals actually have agency over their actions, thoughts, and outcomes. But for some reason, I was absolutely convinced I’d made these changes, gotten myself out of the weird city (I had this idea it was Amsterdam, for some reason), and my light, which apparently was integral to this dream, was now a much happier shade. This in turn made me happy, which I think made the light an even brighter pink.

Yet another thing I don’t get.

What is the point of dreams? Why do mortals have them, and why did I have this one? I have no clue. It imparted no wisdom. I learned no great truths. I did not feel a prophecy had come upon me. Perhaps I should talk to more mortals and see what it is they get out of dreaming, because honestly, I’m stumped.

Unless, reflectively, I were to consider the unthinkable possibility that all this time separated from Her Fae Majesty and my created purpose, the idea of pursuing my own interests and goals (insomuch as I have them), is somehow changing me.

But into what?
