From Friðrós:
You’d think, as small a Realm as Awenia is, that at some point you’d have seen everything—or at least I once thought that. The fact is, even when I’m not creating things in Her Fae Majesty’s absence, I come across things that surprise and delight me all the time.
So, not all stories are bit and full of action. In the great Awenian scheme of things, I am a small cog in a slightly large machine, and things happen here that I miss all the time. So around every corner, I try to be ready to discover something new.

Like music falling from the sky. That’s always fun. In this case, it was sheet music, which I don’t know much about, but it did look rather pretty.
Sometimes, you can be walking in the forest, and there will be a door, and when you open the door, you’ll find something magical, like this. I imagine someone imagined this, if that makes sense. Picture it:
Maybe there’s a little girl, frustrated with her piano or violin practice, and she hides away from her folk, and for whatever reason, she tosses her practice music up into the air. It could be that she loves it so much but cannot play it the way she wants to; it could be because she would much rather be learning to hunt with her sisters, and this is her act of rebellion, just for the day. Imagine her wonder when the pages lift, hover, and stay, rather than being bound by gravity. It might inspire a whole world, or at least a little room in Faerie, just from the strength of one childling’s imagination. That’s the beginning, you know, of creation power. What she does with it now will be up to her, but maybe she realises, at this suspended moment, that she is the crafter of her own destiny. Or maybe she is afraid. Or maybe she’s somewhere in the middle and will need more examples before she believes. Or a hundred, a thousand other stories, all here for the writing.

Imagine that there’s a point during this where she realises only she could have created this. Because only she could experience it as it is. What does that spark?
I’m trying to remember the first time I witnessed a Creatrix at work. It was when I saw Gwyneth shaping the ground of Awenia Faerie—it feels like it was so long ago, but I know it was only a few years—and my reaction to her focus, her confidence, her absolute knowledge that she could do this, create this, carve a river, place a building, grow a forest. When I first saw this remarkable set of abilities, I came away with an idea of what she was that was coloured by my fear and the feeling that only a few very powerful creatures could do what she was doing. I don’t think I did myself any favours when I decided she was a monster during the wee hours of that morning. Her unwillingness to tell me the how of it all frustrated me, and there are times when I am still unreasonably angry with her. She has never sat me down and given me a creating lesson. She’s just left me alone with the Realm and asked me to do things like, change the season to autumn. Change the season to winter. Tighten up the book forest for me, would you?
And now, now the Faire is on the horizon again. This is how I mark my years in Her Fae Majesty’s service. It’s the first place we went when I was first taken in to her retinue, and as I look back on Faires past, when I was first just overwhelmed by the beauty of it all, through my attempts to hide from her and the rest of the Shining Throng, to last year’s outright attempt to just make her angry, I think maybe I have used the Faire experiences as a child would use them.
But now.
Now I have two seasons under my huldufólk belt, and I think I will use this upcoming Faire to see how much I can learn.

So now, in the dark attic of someone else’s daydream, I realise I cannot wait for the next Faire to come around. I know now so much more than I did just a year ago. I wonder if this is the beginning of my real life, or if all of it is just endless steps in a never-ending journey—but then I don’t think it matters.
No. It matters. But more importantly, I am what makes it matter.
