Three Twisted Knots

Tales of the Fae Lands

Treasures of the Deep

From Davi:

By now, you have seen me in many guises. The more I change, the more I grow. And although I began as a creature of the land, the fields and the trails, the longer I roam through these Realms some call home, the more I realise my true home is the sea.

Beneath Monkey Cove

Even if my true home is the sea, my heart will always be a traveller. And that urge for going, to quote Joni Mitchell, is what brought me to Monkey Cove. I heard the diving there was very good, and I was not disappointed.

There were so many things to see. Of course, the sea is vast, and I’m not a poet or even a great speaker, though I can still whistle and sing ’til the green woods ring. But I’ll tell you I felt small beneath Monkey Cove, and I didn’t mind at all.

Citizen of the Sea

Here, I found what looked to be some ancient vessel, but I could not identify the metal or the materials: anyway it was overgrown with barnacles and all kinds of bioluminescent life. I was trying to see if I could pry the hatch open (long mer claws are so good for prying!), but I kept being distracted and pushed away by these large blue fish. It was as if they were trying to tell me to stay away.

In the end, I decided some things are better left a mystery, and I accepted that I’d probably never know who sank there. There was plenty more to see anyway, so I explored until it was time to break open the treasure chest lunch my friend Elicio packed for me.

Now, there are packed lunches and there are packed dinners, but this packed treasure chest lunch was something to behold!

So much food!

I found a convenient abandoned folly and opened the chest. For presentation alone, it was superb, but there’d have to be ten of me to eat all this! Two different kinds of fish roe, and enough seaweed shirazi to feed half an army! Elicio, who did you think was coming along on this outing? Next time, I’ll be sure to give you a head count— I’ll have to take this back to Awenia and put it in someone’s fridge, and probably have a few friends round to the mer-rock come the weekend so none of it goes to waste. As it was, I feasted like a king in my singular palace.

I am humbled by this shirazi plate!

Finally, I had to admit defeat. Even though (awful pun alert!) I do not actually have any feet. And really: who needs them? I packed the rest of the food (the majority of it, if I’m honest!) back into the treasure chest, and then it felt like it was time to go home. So, with the treasure chest securely tucked away (and I won’t tell you where!), I made my way out of the deep waters of Monkey Cove and Realmswam back to Awenia.

Monkey Cove Selfie!

I took a quick selfie to remember the terrain by, and then I was off and away to the waters of Awenia, which is as close as I’ve ever had to a home.

Until next time,

Davi
