I want to go home. Toto wants to go home. Even if it is all sepiatone, and this place is millions of colours, we’re tired now, and we didn’t get to whack the Wizard, because in the end it turned out that we kinda did want to go home … eventually. We opted out of the noble savage plan, so I don’t have three other companions; it’s just me and my little dog, and if I’m honest, we can’t even find the Emerald City, and I think that’s because it’s a lie, and the Wizard is a lie, and this whole place is a lie, and I want to go home where I can be rebellious in the safety of a semi-rural neighbourhood.

‘Toto’, I asked, ‘do you smell something’?
He just snored. Poor puppy, out like a light because…. oh.
Poppies.

Fields and fields of them; the whole ground was carpeted with them, and then, rising up against the yellow road in the distance….
‘What do you think, buddy— is that the actual Emerald City’?
Zzzzzzzz.
‘Come to think of it, I’m kind of tired myself’.
So we napped together for a little while, and then eventually we got up, and I don’t know about Toto, but I had a headache.

‘But just look at that, Toto’! I was (and I’ll deny this if you accuse me later) really excited.
I kept playing with my little cyclone earrings, too. I’d been feeling uneasy about those. Did the Not-So-Good Witch give those to me because she knew the storm was all my fault, or was she just being whimsical? Can you even tell with a Not-So-Good Witches?
So there I am, staring at this impossible place that must be the Emerald City, contemplating the idea of going home, back to my sepia-tone life, and I was, I don’t know. Elated. Again, I will deny this later. I was looking forward to going home. Possibly for the first time ever. Or at least the first time since — well, OK. Technically, this was my first time actually away from home. It’s not like there’s a lot of holiday money just floating around in Kansas during the Dust Bowl Years. That’s US American for what most people in the world think of as the WWII era, but, you know. The country of E Pluribus Unum (that’s what the motto was before the fundies changed it to ‘In God We Trust’, you know) didn’t enter that war until somebody blew up a harbour or something.

And you know what? I was looking forward to the trip. I even smiled. I looked at my little dog, and he looked up at me, and then we both just started singing, ‘We’re off to see the wizard’, like anybody would do. Of course, I might have been hallucinating (see all those poppies?).
